so Spy addon, everyone knows its edited by moderation but i had someone reveal to me that you can add scripts to just straight up see stealthed players on your map/minimap
how is this not blatantly cheating? i just got back to this game since 2008 and this really makes me want to just quit again. he could literally see me on his minimap on his level 10 alt while standing at least 30 meters away from him in stealth. no perception no stealth detection items
Would help if you used first hand experience rather than what you were told

I’ve not looked at it yet, but if the claim here is true then, no, it wouldn’t be cheating. If this info comes directly from the combat log then it’s a development oversight and this info would be available to everyone, even if you don’t have the addon. In this case the addon would just help by making the info more accessible. Think of it kinda like weakauras, but a very limited use case.
trying to get a hold of it so i can report it to blizz but i dont see how or where to report it cause their support system is a confusing mess

yea spy isnt illigal but it sucks. but apparently you can add a script to spy to make you actually able to see stealth players on your map before you even detected them. which is not available in the combat log. im looking into it cause thats absolutely cheating

Stuff like this broke in TBC when the combat log started to log data from miles away. Did this change again with the WOTLK client?

Well the good thing is that all the addons are open source, so you can check the code if you think there is something shady going on in there.
I didn’t notice anything shady right away. It looks like it does track stealthed units, but it requires you to stealth within their log range. You could argue that this is cheating because if you stealth behind a rock where they don’t have LoS to you, they’re getting unfair data, but while you are visible, your stealth cast would still show up in the combat log. I don’t see any data transfer between clients, which could be a way to get map data in BGs if someone on the opposite side also has the addon. The enemy would basically be sending their combat log to you and you would then see everything stealthed players are doing, but as I said, I don’t see anything here that would do this. I’ll install it and do some testing tonight to see what the addon actually shows and does and run some break points in a debugger if I notice some weird data moving when it shouldn’t be.
@beerkeg its an extra script that you can add to spy so it wouldnt be in the original spy code. trying to get my hands on it .
Well, yeah, you can change the code of any addon. I do this often when addons are broken or I want better features in them. I’m not downloading any shady code tho so if you find it, just post the code here or drop it in pastebin.

Well I can’t find anything suggesting that this is possible. Unless proof can be provided I’m just going to assume he was lying. I can’t find anything in the wow core that would give you the option to target a target that doesn’t exist. If you can provide some evidence of this happening or can provide the code used, I’m going to assume he is just using the base Spy addon. Seeing as he is such a trustworthy friend, I’m sure you can convince him to provide the sought after “script”.

All that addon does, is present combat log in slightly better looking way … you could do pretty much the same even without addon, by just setting up your combat log properly …
Theres literally no chance or way for addon to show you real time position of other player …
If he can see where you are, it can be only cheating/hack and should be insta ban …
Theres also chance you misunderstand him, because people describe this addons function as if it told you where stealth is, but it just tells you “someone stealthed nearby”
And I hope you werent in group … because yeah, then he can see you in stealth on minimap …

I have friend who has friend thats his friend told my friend he can do something with spy!!! Dude i use the addons for all classic. There us nothing wrong with that. And he lie to you think u are funnyman
In general spy didnt even show the enemy behind you unless u turn your camera back and look back then spy will find enemy who dont stealth
i mean spy doesnt make me very happy but it is what it is but this guy (who was a friend but not anymore) admitted he was using extra scripts with it. sadly he became hostile. i hope he was the minority,
