Stacking modifiers

So I just saw the Paladin overhaul post on MMO-champion and this section stood out to me:

Stacking modifiers : There are currently several talents and abilities that provide stacking bonuses, which can make for a confusing and messy playstyle that deals extreme burst damage, but in return leaves your core abilities feeling unsatisfying and under-tuned. We intend to significantly change this. We want your core abilities to feel good and powerful when used in all situations. This doesn’t mean we’re reducing all elements of burst damage, but we do want to make burst more purposeful and deliberate, while also allowing options that provide sustained damage.

I just want to say: This is a universal problem across the entire game affecting every every class in such a radical way it’s pretty much ruining the game, in PvP especially so. Can this be looked into for everybody? It needs to be fixed, and singling out paladins like this seems not only unfair to them since it will result in an effective nerf, but also unfair to the rest of us who are tired of trying to align 6 cooldowns perfectly in order to increase our damage by like 400% for 20 seconds and then practically AFK the rest of the time. It’s boring. It’s been boring since it started back in MoP.

Frost is by far the best shot that avoiding this playstyle for mages, which is why I like it, but it’s certainly a big part part what made me leave feral and why I don’t like arcane.

I’d be glad if we returned to Wrath-like classes in this regard - no matter the spec, I just love to push my buttons as I know they’d deal actual dmg or healing.

Certain specs don’t even really have a cooldown, or can be disruptive. (Inferno for every warlock for instance. As the infernal goes away, you need to resummon your primary pet.)

It’s mostly Disc that comes to mind there. I have a strong Flash Heal, Penance and bubble for healing. On retail they are like a drop in the bucket and all I have is a huge ability bloat with an atonement passive healing that feels weak and I take more time applying it than actually dps/healing, or if I spam radiance, I just go oom. Totally not fun. :frowning_with_open_mouth:

And too bad they are a bottom spec. They are maybe the only fun spec left for me, but they deal low damage.

What do they mean by “Stacking Modifiers”?

Is it when you have to Click this buff, then cast this buff, and the make sure that this DPS increase is always up, before you even think about hitting the target and doing some Damage?

Because if that’s what it means, that is pretty much the game at the moment and it why I have pretty much walked away from Mage this expansion.

It’s mainly a problem for Mages currently. Other classes don’t have it to the extend of Mages and Paladins. Warlocks for example are fine in this regard. So are various other specs.

Yeh, I think most Classes I have played/tried this expansion has at least 1 button I think is unnecessary.

Don’t get my wrong, I don’t want a 3 button class what-so-ever, I’m more than happy to have more buttons and more utility. But sometimes you find a spell and think “why do I need to keep pressing this button?”

I fully agree with you. Mages shouldn’t have so many different ways to do the exact same damage profile. It’s almost as if our class has been completely neglected and destroyed since Shadowlands

That’s the way I read it.

Ret Paladins have historically had this problem for a very long time, but if I may be quite honest: This problem has spread into every corner of the game now, and it’s been an issue since Mists of Pandaria. That’s when we got the “swifty macro”; the Swifty Macro was simply 4 different modifiers stacked on top of one another leading to a 1-shot.

In WoD these were then merged together. Over time new ones have been added.

Of course Blizzard would keep “adding health” (aka nerfing all damage including baseline!) to avoid the 1-shots, but the damage that had been done to class design was never repaired. Well, now they’re acknowledging it for once!

We’ve now got a situation where the difference between a character with cooldowns up and a character with cooldowns down can be as much as 400% just on single target. In fact I think I might be lowballing it there.

It’s really not fun to have your abilities just not… work. Like I really am not having fun with the fact that my Frostbolt deals 6k damage this expansion while last expansion, where everybody else had less health due to the lower item levels, I could stack CD’s for it to go to 40k and hit 3 targets at the same time. This was all just modifiers. These abilities were all mostly removed in Shadowlands but Frostbolt wasn’t buffed, leading to frost mages literally disappearing from 2v2 arena and being significantly weaker in 3v3.

But it’s not just mages; it really is not. Feral druids have the same problem and even CD reduction. Rogues have it, too. And rets obviously. DK’s run in with a whole pack of cooldowns - not to mention a flurry of one, and quite literally keep you in place with pretty much no counter but an immunity. Idk how many CD’s they’re stacking but I think it’s easily more than 6.

And then after that they kindda tickle a little for the next 2 minutes and then it starts all over again.

This is just not fun. I’m not going to start PvP’ing again until this kind of gameplay is made the exception rather than the rule, and I don’t particularly enjoy it in PvE either.

And I’m not the only former or current PvP’er who’s got a problem with this:

It just feels that every new expansion Blizz thinks they need to add a new ability to each class.

Where as in the past it was a cool new ability, for example when my Assassination Rouge got Mutilate in BC, that felt awesome.

Nowadays it just feels like another button I have to press in order to do anything.

One of the main reasons I dumped Disc priest.

It has only one, and one saving grace.

Its mage tower is the easiest for me  Memespear got me down a ton of times and the healer one is cancer.

But yeah, everything else just makes me not want to use it for anything higher than a +2.
