State of the troll tribes!

Just an early morning thread to ask a few questions before I go to work, hopefully it’ll start some troll RP discussion!

What is the actual state of the troll tribes? Have the devs clarified at all? I try not to take wowpedia (or quests) at face value because often they tend to come to one conclusion like at one time implying the Syndicate were no longer around a very long time ago despite them actually still being in game. I understand the Drakkari are essentially disbanded (possibly all extinct but hopefully not with pockets of smaller tribes in Northrend) and the Farraki from what I’ve read presumably don’t have much of a presence Tanaris. Even as far back as the original Rise of Zandalari patch that seems to be the case?

From what I can tell only the Dark Trolls are truely extinct. In time I would like to start setting up meet ups in Zuldazar or trying to host something akin to village hours, something along the lines of troll tribes gathering to speak but before I do I would appreciate anyones input on just what state they think the trolls are really in. Also just as a closing comment I’m assuming (hoping) the Zandalari Empire are allies rather than officially under the jurisdiction of the Horde’s council?

Not really other than a portion of the tribes living in zul’dazar and potentially not being outright hostile to the horde as such.

They really took a population hit when Teldrassil went up in flames.

Technically by queen Talanji’s decree but I’m not sure if that changes in Shadows Rising and by next expansion the writers might’ve just forgotten that technical detail.

As of Shadows Rising they’re a member race, rather than outside allies as in BfA.

Well there you have it, then.

Kinda, yeah. There’s the Terrace of the Speakers in Dazar’alor with representatives from most of the smaller tribes, including a single dark troll from the Shadowtooth Clan who claims to be the sole survivor after Twilight’s Hammer wiped them out. Similar story with the Drakkari.
How they’re doing right now is kind of up in the air though. A lot of them were outright hostile to the Horde, and probably joined Zul.

The general of the Zandalari army was a Farraki. Emphasis on was, he was very hostile to the Horde and never considered allying with them after they had slaughtered his tribe and plundered their city.

I remember the time when Bwonsamdi was a Darkspear loa, not some mainstream zandalar fo’eva beat loa.

There’s an honorary rep in Zuldazar. It’s assumed the rest died / was assimilated into Twilight’s hammer, but Blizzard could technically pull some out from underground any time.

Considering how widespread the troll tribes are with all of their subspecies, you could probably make the argument that dark trolls as a whole aren’t extinct, only the Shadowtooth Clan.

the shatterspear tribe should have been dark trolls too.

Also, there’s like five or so frost troll tribes, but only a Drakkari Speaker is in the Hall of Lost Tribes or whatever it’s called.

So more proof that it only goes about tribes and not entire subspecies.

They’re kinda like the Scarlet Crusade in the sense they’ll always keep coming back. There are as many trolls as the narrative demands.

Isn’t there an awkward sand troll skin tone added to the Horde now that isn’t really explained? Yet they couldn’t add a green one for Revantusk?

There’s both Frostmane and Winterax speakers at the Terrace. We apparently didn’t wipe those tribes out.

I remember when my race wasn’t a joke

Trolls have always been a joke, even the Zandalari, flipflopping from allies, to neutrals, to hostile, back to neutral and then allies.

Most other tribes are servants of the Horde or pushed outta their homes by either the Horde or Alliance!

Take solace in that, yes, Zandalar are a joke.

But gnomes are the whole comedy show.

You just insulted my entire race of people :dagger:

:cowboy_hat_face: :smoking:
I’ll do it again

I take solace in the fact that we have dinosaurs.

First off before I mass reply I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the input, I’ve read up on the lore and I’ve finished the Zandalari quests but I wanted to be sure I didn’t have the wrong perspective. Often times there is details gleaned in books that are often left out of wowpedia, which itself isn’t very reliable at times. As a small side note I wasn’t entirely sure whether the gurubashi had been wiped out either but that doesn’t seem to be the case?

That’s the general impression I got as well it feels like most of the tribes are hiding away on Zandalar apart from the ice trolls who seem to be doing their own thing.

Well that sucks I was kind of hoping that they would be their own seperate special sub faction, I really preferred how the Zandalari were portrayed on the Isle of Thunder so it’s kind sad to see them on equal footing with the Horde. I really wish that characters like General Jakra’zet were the standard rather than throw away villains, what a waste of a character. Personally I think the Zandalari taking the role of forsaken where the pact with the Horde is born out of convenience rather than actual genuine loyalty would have been better, I guess Blizzard adding anything to the game really is a monkypaw wish.

It seems to be that way, the impression I got was after Zul’s coup failed they all either went their seperate ways or decided to remain on Zandalar in some capacity, during Talanji’s coronation there’s quite a lot of different tribes present so that gives me hope they’ll turn up in the future if the game isn’t totally dead by then.

Oh I’m aware! I just wasn’t sure whether it had been retconned in some book whether Zul’farrak had actually fallen or not, I’m just glad the Farraki haven’t been damaged like the Drakkari tribe have. Apparently they were referenced recently in a short story that involved Sul’thraze so they still might have some presence in the desert.

Honestly given the state of the lore they might as well, it would be a total waste if they just let the troll tribes die out. It’s not like it really serves any kind of greater purpose it feels quite sad honestly that they and the rest of the tribes weren’t thrown in with the Zandalari.

There is, darkspear trolls can also have the really dark skin tone that matches the Dark Trolls as well unless I’m mistaken. I’ve spotted that sand troll skin tone on a few NPCs in the Shatterspear tribe so whether that’s an oversight or not I wouldn’t know but I think that’s the intention they might have had. Unless they actually decide to update the trolls again we’ll probably never know, next time hopefully we’ll get the models for the other tribes thrown in rather than simple skin variations.
