Way too long a cast time for way too little impact.
I wish I was joking when I say that I almost always wait for passive focus regen instead because this ability feels like I’m wasting time.
And that scrap of 10 focus at the end of it really doesn’t feel worth a 1.6 sec cast time. Especially when Aimed Shot has 3.5 times the focus cost for a cast time that’s just .5 seconds longer.
And in group settings, having your target die before that cast time is even over feels like a punch the gut. I could’ve just used Kill shot with my passive focus regen instead being denied that scrap of 10 focus.
In PVP, I can’t count how many times I’ve missed out on the Kill shot window because my target got healed mid steady shot cast. I know I can macro it to stop casting but that will impact Aimed shot as well.
Like I said. In it’s current state I actually opt for not using it when I get the chance.
A filler ability shouldn’t feel like it hinders you.
What I’d love to see is a shorter cast time. 10 focus gain shouldn’t take more than a 1 sec cast time, especially seeing how focus starved MM is this expansion.
Yes, there’s a haste talent on spamming steady shot but it takes away from BiS legendary builds.
It doesn’t hinder you in anyway, even if steady shot gave 0 focus and did 80% less damage you’d still press it because the alternate option is pressing nothing.
I don’t even know what you mean by this, but steady focus is the best talent both single target and AoE.
It feels like it does. That’s the whole point I’m making. Looking at how different the numbers are on aimed shot and steady shot but how similar their cast times are, I feel cheated using the ability. I’m not talking about balance I’m talking about fun.
It’s like saying you feel cheated when you press demons bite over chaos strike, yes because one is a generator and one is a spender. Or cheated when you press fireball instead of pyro, or cheated when you incinerate over chaos bolt, the list goes on.
Demon’s bite doesn’t have a cast time, and pyro and chaos bolt have longer cooldowns.
We’re talking about a spec that requires you to ignore procs to be more effective because of how focus starved we are.
I could rant more about other issues with how counter-intuitive MM is to play but my main gripe is that steady shot feels bad to use because the focus/cast-time ratio is too low.
Don’t use steady shot then if it feels that bad. You will completely gimp yourself but seems like you don’t care so just skip it if that makes you happy.
agree i hate steady shot in its current guise , having to spend 4 seconds every 11 seconds to keep a dumb buff up and the huge dps gimp if you don’t manage it , mm hunters are the only class in game right now that get punished so heavily if you dont play perfectly
Just make arcane-shot generate focus and scrap steadyshot. Or scrap arcaneshot and make steadyshot hit twice as hard. Three single target spells where two can be used on the go and only one being “good” is really, for me at least, off-putting.
I mean - having arcane shot generate focus and scrapping steadyshot (wont’ happen since steadyshot is an iconic spell) - would clean up the rotational clutter that at least I find cumbersome.
Arcane shot, especially after an aimshot is way more satisfying than casting steadyshot. You only cast steadyshot for the buff or to gain focus. I find that boring af!
Fun is subjective. I find it fun to min-max my performance and correct use of Steady Shot in our rotation is something that can set a part a good hunter from a mediocre hunter. Steady Shot is not meant to be a “feel good” ability. But not all parts of a spec should be straight forward to use. It’s good to have some parts be more tedious than others because it makes the spec much more dynamic. If everything was just “spam instant abilities” it might make the spec easier to play for bad players but it would make it much less interesting to min-max for good players.
You say that Steady Shot “feels like a waste of time” but it’s definitely not. Steady Shot amounts to approximately 6-8 % of your damage on a boss fight which is a lot. So feel free to not use Steady Shot, but that’s partly what differentiates you doing LFR and a good Hunter doing mythic.
If you want a straight forward feel-good spec you got BM.
It does feel bad to use it in PvP yes, in pve it’s a good filler with talent.
Now about cast time and reward:
Yes it does feel bad to use it for small focus gain but with out passive focus regen also working during cast time, it Is decently passable for a focus building ability.
The problem only really shows during long fights where after your double tap, trueshot and such end, and you cast all of your enhanced arcane shots, 12second cooldown of aimed shot makes you fill rotation with some unenchanted arcane or multi shots to spend focus.
Those 20-30seconds out of our 2 minutes feel very bad for me personally, but it can be offset by random procs of talents giving you free aimed shot charges.
Exactly! Thank you. Whack-a-mole is the perfect expression
Steady Shot is not meant to be a “feel good” ability. BUT it’s completely essential for the dynamic of the spec. Proper use of Steady Shot can be the difference between a good hunter and an excellent hunter. Without Steady Shot MM would be much more straight forward to play, which is not a good thing.
