And yeah I said chains but it’s everything, stop making shaped objects flat, if it cost too much time to do just do something else please it looks so cheap I can’t even believe it.
LOL That’s exactly what I was talking about with a friend an hour ago, I linked this mount: https://www.wowhead.com/item=167170/unshackled-waveray and pointed out at the metal rings attached to the painted (yikers…) rope.
These METAL rings look like rubber, I literally said the same thing HAHAHA
Wow has always had a simpler graphics engine than most other games, textures for equipment not excluded. This is one of the things that made wow so popular when it came out. A lot of older mmo players that played EQ2, SWG or another mmo at the time discarded WoW for being ugly and cartoonish, but the over all possitive effects of the simplified graphics quick proved them all wrong. Wow, with its simple engine, had much smoother gameplay, quicker response and a lot lesser lag. This was extremely valuable especially for pvp. WoW has evolved, updated specifics of its engine several time and new gear has a lot better resolution than old ones, but it is still this simplified engine wich is not really 3d in a real aspect. SWG had real raytracin back in the days but very few could have that option on as their computers wouldnt allow it. One of the best visual mmo games of all time, Vanguard, had astounding graphics but at a cost of framerate drops and extreme lag. Today we have much better computers than we did back then, but WoW do still have the same basic engine. Sure they did a lot of improvement during the years, but the idea is still to be able to play on a computer that is not the highest performance one.
Chest pieces are the worst of the lot, with even the newest ones usually just consisting of body paint.
If you have shoulderpads the size of a pair of lounge chairs, I don’t see the problem with beefing up the chest piece slightly.
An issue I’ve found with those 3D chests as well is when wearing them together with a tabard, the 3D assets are just sort of… glued onto the front of your tabard. It looks… yeah.
So, this reminds me of a discussion I had back in early 200X when I was making maps for Counter-Strike and getting ‘schooled’ by the guys who made fun maps like Lord of the Rings (Moria, Helms Deep, etc) anyway…
I was making a few new maps and wanted to show them off on the forums, they were filled with the pre fabricated ‘generic half-life wooden box / texture’ and one of the guys from the team gave me the most valuable piece of advice that has stuck with me.
What is the point of having this overused texture everywhere, what purpose does it actually serve? Just because you can use it, it doesn’t mean you have to use it.
Tl;dr - why do blizzard feel the need to put chain print on stuff that doesn’t need it, rather than put actual effort in, and / or use a more appropriate texture.
