Rogues can’t find me. I’ll use the massive incoming boomer post as a distraction.
Also: All I need to defeat you, is to put up a engineering training dummy with zarao’s face. That will keep you busy, as I slowly shoot you down with my MM rotation.

I knew there was a reason I stay Horde-side on AD mostly, we are kind and accepting of our new Highmountain and Nightborne cousins! One can never have enough novelty walking coatracks after all, and it isn’t like they are stealing the niche of ‘incredibly arcane elves’…hang on…waitaminute! grabs lynching rope

To be fair, I do play Alliance a fair bit as well on AD, and whilst there were certainly tense scenes, a lot of shouting and threats against Void Elves (I wasn’t involved, as a Gnome I didn’t really have a horse in that race), and a couple of times there were scuffles, nobody has banished Void Elves from Stormwind, (not that any guild has such power…) and people have generally calmed down about them now.

I’m in two minds about it. I mean the worst thing is, I can see -why- people would dislike them, I mean they -were- enemies, they have indulged in magical practices that even your evil wicked enemies have went “I say, that’s going too far” and kicked them out for, I mean I can see why there would be suspicion and resentment.

Equally however, their leader is such a big Alliance Hero that she has a hossing big statue of her as you approach the city? You going to mess with the Alleria/Turalyon power couple? No, I thought not…

I stayed well out of that mess, to be honest, but like I say, seems to have died out now.

Racism in RP is a thorny issue, best handled with care, I mean no one here (I hope) is a racist in real life, and our handling of our characters normally is influenced by our real world knowledge that it is a deeply flawed and unpleasant aspect of humanity, I have however had experience of this in RP.

(Don’t worry, this isn’t some super serious thing, I couldn’t possibly have -more- privilege, being white, cis and male)

I attend a massive LARP system in the UK called ‘Empire’, when I say massive, it has a town, with streets and traders, it has thousands of players. It is set, in well, an Empire, with ten different nations, each with a different cultural slant. They are all part of the same Empire, but obviously they have different cultural and political views, so there is a lot of politicking. The Empire is sorely beset on all sides by Barbarian tribes, these Barbarians are all Orcs, and as such are seen as ‘inhuman’ by the humanocentric Empire. In fact the Humans used to keep Orc prisoners as slaves, until 60 years ago there was a massive slave rebellion, and the Orc Slaves were allowed to form their own nation, as free citizens of the Empire.

As such, you have two character choices as far as race goes, you can play a Human, of one of the nine human nations, or you can play an Imperial Orc. Now these aren’t Orcs as in Warhammer Orcs, or even WoW Orcs, they are generally incredibly literate, and law abiding, fierce soldiers certainly, and very robust in their manners, but not ‘Raargh, me smash’ types, they’re more like squaddies.

They all wear full head latex masks, these literally completely change your appearance, we’re talking film grade quality stuff here.

Now three years ago, I started playing one of these Orcs, he’s -incredibly- erudite, friendly and so on, but even my friends who knew me, did not know it was me under the mask.

You actually notice the racism. Its bizarre. You walk through the streets of Anvil (The town) and some people will actually cross the road to avoid you, because ‘everyone knows that orcs are violent barbarians who shouldn’t be free citizens’. You’ll get others who come up to you and gushingly start apologising for slavery, and how terrible it is what their ancestors did to your ancestors, when you were just going about your day, and then you do get a heftier chunk who will treat Orcs as people, and whilst they -know- you’re an Orc, and what happened, don’t feel the need to bang on about it either way.

Just about every person who has played an Imperial Orc reached the same conclusion. “Is this what people of other ethnic groups have to put up with each day in predominantly white countries?”

As I say, for a straight white dude, it was a very eye opening experience suddenly actually being the victim of both sides of racism, the suspicious looks and muttered insults, and the over keen “I like Orcs, I have three Orc friends, I’m not racist!”

That’s not trivialising Real world racism, but it did give me, a person who will never experience it for real, a brief snapshot view as to what it can be like.

TL:DR Just Brigante waffling on again…

And I told you dammit, I’m not a Boomer, that’s my parents era, I’m Generation X. The demographic, not the wrestling combo…

Sure thing my boomer friend <3

Generally about 1 or 2 at any given time, they rarely last that long, and its pretty much everyones understanding that as Blizz have stated, they ain’t exactly welcome around Stormwind…

Unfortunate but understandable, ty for the info’.

I think the nail in the coffin for them was Blizzard confirming that the Alliance generally likes the Argents, but hates the Scarlets, but yeah, its perceived as very bad form to play a Scarlet in an Alliance city…

Which sounds like a great reason to have it play out (in a safe setting where you can always take off the mask and play something else). People can even learn something from it!

You win this one!

By the way, I hope the more…eager Horde posters find their way here, yet. This thread won’t do much for the forum climate if it seems like an Alliance echo chamber…featuring Brigante.

Yeah, Absolutely! I mean I am fortunate that my parents, despite being of the Boomer generation (In your face Anouk!) harboured no racist, sexist or anything-ist feelings, so myself and little brother were brought up to be tolerant of differences, so it was genuinely interesting to see it from the other side of the coin. Like you say, the fact that it was a ‘safe’ environment makes it different, but you still do get a certain ‘vibe’ which makes you think.

What can I say, I am a garrulous son of a gun, who never uses one word where ten will do…

It seems to be a very ancient draenic dialect.

It is indeed, but more towards a motion than actual words. That motion being screaming in agony.
