As I write this, I am stuck infight for the n’th time yet again. I’m not looking for solutions to get out of combat, I know how to. The question is however: How is this still a thing? Honestly, this bug’s been in the game for, what, 10 years now? ten f’cking years, and that’s a conservative guess. I vaguely remember being stuck infight during Vanilla times. This is far past the point of riddicule.
Look, I’m not claiming this is a major issue. It’s a minor inconvenience with a multitude of ingame solutions. Wanna know how I know? Because i worked out some of those solutions for myself 8-10 years ago.
But still… Blizz… seriously now: how is this still a thing? During the last ten years we’ve had bug- and glitchfixes concearning spell and toy effects under weirdly specific and odd conditions, yet this one is unfixable?

You’d think they’d make it such that if whatever is attacking you hasn’t hit you in the last 30 seconds it’d put you out of combat from it [outside raids and dungeons]…

yeah for example.
I’m not even mad at this point. It’s just baffeling how this is still in the game after at least 10 years

It drives me mental.
Old SWG had a / command (I think it was /peace but could be wrong) that dropped aggro if you were stuck and took you out of combat.
If an mmo that was older than WoW can do it…
There are some enemies in Mechagon (the zone, not the dungeon) that place down crawler bombs which attempt to reach you and detonate. However, if you are further away than whatever their arbitary aggro range is, they remain buried in the ground while keeping you in combat throughout most of if not all of the zone. They also don’t seem to ever despawn.
It took me about two hours of running around on that island in the early days of its launch till I finally figured out why I can’t ever leave combat.
This and tab targeting have no excuses to be so broken after 20 years, but hey if its borken dont fix it, new blizzard motto

I’d like it if the bastards were highlighted, or if we could set the UI so that what’s targeting us shows up like it does when we target something.
This way we can SEE what we’re in combat with & do something about it.
I spent about a minute killing little dinosaurs in a world quest to find the one that had me in combat, turns out he’d got stuck behind a tree when he ran away in fear.

Tab targeting has been a bast’rd as well ever since WoD and seems to get worse with every attempt to fix it each expansion. always tons of fun to just tab to the next mob for a quick interrupt and to pull the group two rooms over with it
Invisibility. Enter a dungeon. Hs. Altf4 and play an alt for 5mins?

I’m a rogue, so it’s never been a problem for me

Happened to me today, as I was running out of Guo-Lai Halls. Stuck in seemlingly endless combat with no way out, except run as far away as possible. Most likely it is a mob stuck under the ground.
Since I know it can happen, I don’t really mind. Like you said, it is a minor inconvenience.
But it does not seem like they know how to fix it, so one solution would be to give every class an ability to remove themselves from combat.
My favourite case is still the barrels in Sky-something, the mountain area in Valley, in dailies in Mists. I kept getting stuck in combat there.
It turned out that, since the kegs lying around could explode if you damaged them, any splash of AoE would keep them in combat with you until you killed them - and they never followed you, so you could never see what you were in combat with.
Had to hearthstone to Kul tiras was in combat with a mob in the middle of nazmir despite having been forced to walk manually to two different world quests…cause vanish didnt solve the issue.
the problem isn’t getting out of combat. there’s tons of ways to do it. The problem is that is still happens after at least 10 years^^

Happened even in Visions~ good that once
Need to overhaul the “in combat” design. It has been broken for as long as I can remember?
First, mobs get you into combat just by threat and without hitting you. This is terrible design. You get interrupted trying to mount just because some far away mob has aggroed, even though you have not got hit.
The opposite is not true. If I right click on a mob, THEY do not aggro until/unless I hit them with something. I can even cast a spell, but until it lands they are NOT in combat (eg I can precast Solar Wrath and for as long as it travels the boss is not in combat).
This needs to be fixed : when mobs aggro you but have not reached you and have not hit you with melee or spells you are NOT in combat.
It is ridiculous that a level 1 squirrel can aggro a level 120 player and interrupt him trying to use his mount.

So untill a Raidboss / dungeonmob hits you, you can just mount up and leave? Can you imagine the mountain of exploits this would immediately allow for? The system just needs bugfixing and that’s about it.
My supposed fixes would be:
- remove the Combat trigger from Critters
- remove the Combat trigger from Items such as attackable barrels etc
- unless in combat with a (mini)Boss or in an instanced Area, force the combat to end after 20 seconds of not attacking it / not being attacked
This is more of a workaround than a fix but it would still work
Can’t even remember when i saw one of those for the first time… Must’ve been around TBC xD

Getting stuck in combat is something that annoys me intensely and I’ve found a few things that do it.
A critter that you’ve hit with AoE that’s lurking in a bush or behind a tree or rock.
A corpse of an already slain creature. I mean, a CORPSE !, how on earth can a dead mob still aggro on you ? Mouse over the corpse and you see the attack icon and you have to kill it again to clear aggro.
A glitched untargetable mob that you can’t kill.
And then there’s the unknown reasons.
One Invasion WQ in Aszuna has me stuck in combat after I’ve killed the boss, I can run all the way to Highmountain and I’m still in combat, logging out doesn’t drop combat and the only way I’ve found to lose the combat is to die.
