Stupid SSD question

Guys,

Forgive me for this bane question but… I have two harddrives one SSD one not, does that mean i need to move WOW to my SSD harddrive for shadowlands?

Again forgive me if this is painfully obvious my computer knowledge stops at turning it on…

Then you have one hard drive  and one SSD.

Pedantic silliness aside, no, it does not mean that.
It never meant it before they amended the minimum spec list but about 5 days ago they added “or a decent HDD” to the minimum spec list.

But I highly recommend that you do move WoW to your SSD regardless.

Yes, you should move WoW to SSD if you want faster load times and alike

Ok ready for stupid question two, does this mean a full uninstall and then just reinstall on my SSD? ive only been running my OS off my SSD so its no issue its got room just thinking the whole time save add ons etc etc

It probably does mean that.

On the Battle net app you can go to the settings and point to where you want WoW to be installed, perhaps changing that location will make BNet install it a second time allowing you to play on the HDD installation while it downloads, or even copy the files over.

But if I was you I’d uninstall and reinstall before you go to bed tonight, and maybe go to your WoW fodler on your HDD and copy the WTF and addon folder so you dont lose all your keybinds etc.

Yeah, that was what i thought.

Thanks for your help guys!

hey dude, how big is your SSD?

You can move the install over from one drive to another and then have the Battlenet client locate the new location when you next open it, I’ve done this in the past.

Good question, i looked earlier and it had 150 gig free so im presuming 300 gig region? total ballpark guess as i say its only got my windows running on it, all my steam games & wow etc run off the other drive

the most important bit is that windows is on the ssd.
there is no point having an SSD if windows is not on it. If windows is on your ssd its all good. if not you have to install windows from scratch but on your ssd.

if windows is on your ssd but wow is not you have to uninstall wow and install it again, when blizzard launcher asks you where to install it pick the SSD as target drive and let it install there. try to keep 30% of your SSD free. SSDs run the fastest if at least 30% of the space is free. so install everything on your HDD by default unless you need it on your SSD.

Thanks, im going to install wow on to it, i am planning to give this computer a decent update but it has to wait until next year now as my better half says the garden being done is more important and who am i to question her xD.

So yeah it should hold even with shadowlands added although it might start to push it beyond the 30% it will hopefully only be for 6 months or so anyway

You can open up two folders. First is your current wow folder on the HDD, the second is your SSD.
Right click the wow folder on the HDD and right click>copy. Click on the SSD folder and right click>paste.
This will then copy wow from the HDD to the SSD, it will take a few minutes.

Then you need to open up your battlenet thingy. Just below the wow logo theres a little cogwheel that says “Options”. Click that. Click on game settings > Game install / update and set the default install directory and game directory to the SSD (so it looks for it on the SSD and not the HDD)

Hope this helps.

you should thank her for her wisdom because the best thing you can do if you want to save money is to wait until the RTX 3060 which comes out in january. that card will be extremely cheap (estimated at something like £300) and will be able to run any game at max settings on 1080p. it will most likely be sold out instantly and youll need to wait for february/march to be able to buy one which is going to be in 6 months so it is good that you will wait.
if you bought something now you would regret it in 6 months.

I saw theyd released a new range but didnt realise it was so cheap! Im probably going to be looking about March time once weve got all this done so that might work out perfectly!

Again thanks for all your help guys

they did release the new range but it is too powerful for people on a budget. the cheapest of the new range costs £500 and can run any game on max at 1440p. most people play at 1080 so it would be a waste of money for them.
they are delaying the 3060 version until january.
basically cards that costed £1200 last month only cost £500 now. if you want you can go to ebay right now and search “2080ti”. ebay is flooded by people desperately trying to sell their old junk before it becomes completely worthless. thats why waiting is the best thing you can do right now.

Well, it will open up faster and probably have faster loading screens.

I don’t know where you get this idea that you “have” to move your game from a HDD to SSD.

Need ? No.

If want to, sure.

If you want faster loading screens a LOT yes.

And put windows/mac on ssd tool

Thats basicaly “buying pc components” in a nutshell. If you go by that you will end up just waiting and waiting…anything you buy now, or in january will be almost worthless year later…thats just how fats its evolving…

BIG TRUE!

GEt 3080 /3070 Nvme m2 disk and you are good for few years to notice any difference.

Maybe if you manged to get PS5 SSD on pc that would be noticeable change if games worked around speed of that ssd.
