Survival doesn't need dots

So I’m looking at rerolling from mage for 8.2 and I was trying out survival. I was having loads of fun playing with butchery for burst aoe and chucking bombs, aspect of the eagle is brilliant. Only thing that puts me off is to play the spec to the max is you have to manage your dots. Seems to me too many classes have to manage dots these days. Just wondering if anyone else had had the same experience?

You have one DoT to manage now, which is much easier than when Surv was a range/hybrid range-melee (Wotlk and prior). Not to mention when DoTs were still affected by pots and proccs of all sorts.

Don’t really see the bad thing with managing a DoT or two, especially with the current “just refresh when running out” style we have now.

Just me. It’s the multi dotting I don’t like, one target is ok but at the same time, refreshing dots mid burn ST feels bad to me. Might be a shadow priest by now otherwise.

Serpent Sting is also a pulling tool, which ignores armor, has great focus per damage ratio and works in synergy with Latent Poison traits which further increase your main ability damage and enable great burst through passive ticks that stack the debuff up.

Yh and the fangs one too but if you careful with your azerite traits you can make it less important to the rotation. I find the spec loads more fun with butchery swinging my axe around. In dungeons the time you spent killing off that last mob and move the next pack your usually back up to 3 stacks of butchery so you go into packs with bomb 3x butchery which resets the cd on bomb, lovely aoe burst.

On a single target fight the Latent Poison will amount to around 15% total damage, whereas the highest damaging spell overall is your Mongoose at around 20-25% (not raptor strike). Serpent Sting alone is much lower overall, but you get my point?

3x bomb traits would amount to 3 little clusters of 2400 base damage each, question of how consistent they are with hitting a moving target.

3x LP would would amount to around extra 3300 dmg every 2 seconds or so. Thats an extra 30k damage fully stacked, ideal for possible multi-dotting and in pvp, where you might spend some time incapacitated, but you make up for the downtime with a nice little burst.

Overall Carve is really bad and people like Butchery for the 360 degree swipe and it’s animation alone, but it is quite undertuned compared to other options, so people tend to avoid it completely.

Yh I can handle the dot on single taget I’ve decided but multidot managing a 10sec dot is a pain and not fun. 10sec dot seems a bit bad tbh if it was 12sec+ it would fit better with mongoose too.

Multidotting is not really necesary in most situations without the Hydra’s Bite talent, extra focus is just as good being dumped into empowered Mongoose, it evens out on the damage output. The gain is minimal and you shouldn’t feel forced to do it.

Hydra bite + LP tab tabbing through targets to get extra damage from the stacks is a positive gain, but most people will prefer the bomb talents, because groups of mobs don’t live long enough in the first place.

I tried out the different talents/az traits in dungeons last night. I was only doing 3s and 4s as I’m undergeared but butchery was going more dmg for me than the other options. Could be me obviously but there was a big difference. At that level, by the time I’ve got bomb, 3x butchery, bomb off there’s only one or two targets left. It there’s a big baddy in with the pack I’d dot him up first and let the LP stack.

Be interesting to see at what level this changes and butchery becomes a problem.

With survival it comes down to priority. SS looses priority in burts and with Volatile bombs it’s easier to manage your dot’s, but I understand that more than 3 mobs it’s hard to multidot and manage them.
