Base spec and talents that can be changed based on situation. Those talents react differently to azerite traits you pick. Those traits and talents say which essences you pick while taking in consideration type of encounter you gonna fight. Then all that says what your stat priority is. Then comes corruption on top of that that has many varieties and applications. Vendors for azerite traits using residuum, vendors for coins in raid, vendors for essences and echoes. Conquest points for PvP cap, vendor for corruption, coalescing currency to buy keys of a vendor for Horrific Visions which drop corrupted mementos a currency that can be used to purify gear and buy sockets for it at a vendor… Currency, vendor, currency, vendor, vendor, track this, track that… Its not my job to track all this…
I have a bracers with corruption X at level 470, corruption is ok in raid but not good in M+, should I purify it and buy better one. What if I swap essences then other corruption would be better or if I need more AoE then maybe TD is right. What if I have alternative in other slot and buying this corruption is wrong I should get some other and swap my gloves to lover ilvl but they have expedient that will…
Yea I sim, I like to know what is good what is bad for my class, but this. This is way to much system interacting, stupid vendors for stupid stuff for big DPS swings that keeps changing base on what type of content you play. Vers proc is crazy in PvP, TD is good in M+, but if your class can use Raden weapons then you should probably take some ST corruption because, this is just example… They broke the camel’s back. I say enough, I’m gonna go play some GTA V and RDR2 until Shadowlands prepatch. Lets hope for less of a clusterfk of system, vendors, currencies and all other stupid st that makes WoW feel like a job and not a game. I just wanna do PvP or Raid or M+ get items get stronger and be done with it. Not this min maxing infinite combinations that you need spreadsheets to track…
If I read right (it’s late and I’m tired so…), OP is struggling under the weight of variables in current gear and how it makes it really hard to work out what is an upgrade and what isn’t.
And I tend to agree. I favoured stat-stick gear that didn’t mask poor class design and left it raw and obviously in need of developer attention. Right now nobody can tell what’s an upgrade, or what’s down to class mechanics or the gear.
But my advice would be; don’t over-optimise. All of it does something. If in doubt, pick one that’s fun to you and don’t worry too much unless you’re falling way behind your group.
There is a huge amount to take into account. We want different azerite, talents, essences, corruption and sometimes stats for differen5 content and single target vs AoE.
Guides can be found on various sites and class discords. I sim most drops as it’s a nightmare trying to figure out what is and isnt a dps increase at a glance.

I have bracers with Twisted Appendage Rank 2 with crit/haste and socket I use them in ST and PvP attack set. Then I have bracers with 12% Expedient which I use in my AoE set. Then I have crit/vers bracers with gem that I use in my PvP defensive set. Now we have a vendor Ineffable Truth R1 12 corruption on vendor. So if I bought it would be a dps increase for me, but my PvP attack set should not go over 39 and I’m at 36 now and my defensive PvP set should not go over 20 corruption and my M+ set should not go over 59 depending on affixes may be 39. So I can’t just add it on bracers I’m using for PvP I must take some other item with corruption out and those new bracers may make that my other sets now all need to be changed and I need to figure out how are they going to be changed.
I have over 50 pieces of gear from different azerite for PvP, dungeon, tanking in raid, tanking in M+ to 6 different bracers and a single bough corruption messes it all up. Funny thing is I’m talking about DH which has 1 talent setup for everything only thing you swap is ST stun for PvP. I’m not even going to go about my druid and hell which is happening there with 4 different specs and 4 different roles and bags of items and corruptions there.
It’s not impossible for me to figure out what is best, I have MSc in Applied Mathematics for crying out loud, but it just sucks the fun out of my game to do so and it if I don’t do it I have this nagging feeling that my char isn’t using the best item combination available to it.
Yea you can say just don’t do it, it doesn’t matter at my pleb rating of 2k or my clearing of +18 dungeon or clearing of heroic raid. And I agree. I decided not to do it. Canceled my subscription and it expires in 9 days. Would watch closely for a mail for Shadowlands Beta, maybe I get it. I hope that expansion will be more enjoyable and feel to me (other people may not share this feeling) more like a game then a job.

Once I get the expansion I desire my life may make sense or maybe when I get it I will just desire something else that will make perpetual motion of wanting something that is yet to come. I think Beckett would like WoW, Kafka not so much…
The first time I simmed I was losing on 20% dps. Contrary to my belief, my ilvl 420 was better than the 445, because of the azerite traits and how they interact with the essences, the corruptions, and passive procs. On another toon a 435 was better than the newly acquired 470.
And also contrary to all guides, twilight devastation r3 simmed crap compared to stat corruptions.
Nothing in this patch is intuitive. I’m staring at the corruptions from MOTHER and I’m like… what do I buy? What’s the best one for what I’m trying to achieve?
Some of them share pieces; some don’t. None of them share azerite items. Some of them have tertiary stats that I really don’t want to lose. I have to try to keep corruption manageable and relevant on all 4 sets.
I have lost count of how much gear I’m carrying. Now and then I flick through my bags and work out what’s not assigned to any set and consider scrapping it - but may not, if it’s the only uncorrupted item for that slot, because who knows, maybe I will get a new corruption tomorrow and want to be able to replace something!
It’s messy, no doubt about it; I’m definitely never sure whether I’m wearing the optimal gear or not.

I have just read your original post and it was well written and informed and I was wondering the same thing, why was this flagged? But then I got to the last paragraph and that answered my question. So 2 or 3 words that could have easily been rephrased.
Yea I mean, purists. In game where you kill stuff and there is torture and in last expansion we had a leader commit genocide I have my post flagged for F word its kinda a joke ain’t it.
Game audience is mature enough to handle those themes but F word is a step to far. I mean, sure why not.
I don’t consider myself a purist, I swear a lot when I am frustrated with something, but I don’t do it on the forums because it is against the rules of posting. If I don’t want to be silenced/banned, I find other words that still convey my frustration/anger. We might not all agree with the rules, but if we want to post we do have to follow them.

Agreed. That last sentence is a straight-up, undeniable breach of the rules. Did the post really gain anything from it? You made good points, and then undercut them with petulance. I’d edit it out before a mod gets to it; maybe they’ll overlook it if it’s removed.
Tbh changing talents, essences, corruptions, trinkets, azerite gear between exhausts me soooo much. If you play arenas then you change also pvp talents depending on matchup.
Adapting to specific type of content is cool, but not if you are showered with so many systems. At least covenants forced one-trick-ability will solve that somehow.
Just never again azerite gear, essences, corruptions.
