Tents... Just tents

Hey guys.

So, when I find myself idling in WoW, I do this thing every now and then. I use that little suggestion box doo-hickey in game and write in to good old Blizzard. About what? Why. TENTS OF COURSE.

I remember when I learned of the existence of the WoD leatherworking tents and had a look at them. Tents of just about any variety. Big ones, small ones. Fancy ones, rustic ones. My mind just raced with possibilities. Oh man, oh boy, these have got to be one of the most useful roleplaying items in the g-Only works on Draenor.

Don’t you hate it? When you learn of an item that would be amazingly immersive and useful, but then turns out to be next to useless and hamstringed. Can only hold a stack of 5 of each tent on a character. Lasts ten minutes or something. Only works on Draenor. Etcetera.

So even if they were available to us outside Draenor, they would still be a huge pain in the neck if you don’t plan to live next to a mailbox and have it full of tents for yourself. Just one of those things you just haaaave to suck up.

It just irritates me to no end, when a couple of small changes to items like these could add such a colossal benefit to our small corner of the WoW player base. Just a few small changes to these WoD items that no one has a use for at the moment. The tents working outside Draenor, having a far larger stack size (Or just being made into toys.) and remaining spawned for longer. Those sorts of things.

But, to add some interaction to this frustrated rant:

What kind of use did you come up for tents when they were still usable in the rest of the world of WoW? And what uses could you put them to RIGHT NOW?

I for one am currently concentrating on my ice troll character here and as such spend a lot of time skulking around Dun Morogh. You can probably see how useful a nice, hide tent would be for that sort of stuff.

Use them as tents.

You know what I mean though, right? Every festival event would be livened up by merchants setting up rows of stalls with tents. Military guilds would have these beautiful, organized rows. It’s getting me hot and bothered just thinking about it. Mmm~

We could use bigger tents though, not these one-person, floorless ones.

I’d be happy if we just had the ones that are already in the game available… And not completely awful because of restrictions. sigh Blizzard…

The WoD tents were actually usable outside Draenor during WoD. I got to use them in a few RP sessions, they provided some nice flavour to the wilderness camping we got to do.

You know, I think the tents’ downfall was their gameplay benefit: Standing near a tent gave you the Rested buff, and portable resting stations weren’t much in the Legion team’s favour. The team limited players’ ability to switch talents to rested areas only, and having those tents be usable while leveling in the Broken Isles would understandably create a loophole in their planned systems.

So… then they took their good ole sledgehammer to a nail approach and made them unusable outside Draenor instead of removing the rested buff.

Anyway, to actually reply to the topic in a substantial manner, I’d… find far too many great uses for tents to list here. But they’re many, ranging from doodads for DM’d events to a place to camp in the wilds and even portable residences for nomad characters.
Oooo, imagine a guild of nomadic tauren carrying tents with them wherever they go. Making their own little enclaves outside larger settlements like in the good old days. < 3

On the topic of things that were added in Warlords of Draenor that prove that feature X can in fact be done by Blizzard: mounted combat in Nagrand.

“Dear Blizzard, have you considered the possibility of players wanting to fight on top of their mounts outside a single zone?” is what I think each time someone bloody mentions wishing for mounted combat.

Moreover, I imagine it could very well be implemented with the new mount equipment system. :eyes:

Re. On the OG topic of the post - tents were a nice addition and I’d love it if Blizzard brought them back, even without the rest buff.

Mounted combat would break the game in so many aspects however.

Just look at gaps you can suddenly jump.

Not to mention PvP.

Hot take; PVP is an aspect that keeps hamstringing the game.

I know they’ll never change it but, tbqh, PVP should be limited to PVP servers and BF/Arenas, where they can just turn stuff on and off as they see fit. Then let everyone else just get on and have a more fun game :stuck_out_tongue:

I understand you. Would love the restriction removed on the tents…

Hello there!
In short… All i can suggest is, use Frostfire ridge as Dun Morogh OOC. Both are snowy and you can use TENTS there.
But i agree, hopefully restrictions will be removed. Not to mention i didn’t know about the tents’ existance…

Building your own camp is such a powerful thing that tents could provide, like they once did. No more claiming questing hubs for your guilds. No more fighting over space. No more squatting in buildings that clearly belong to npcs. You would be able to settle whenever and where-ever your heart desired. The freedom that would give is immeasurable. I mean, you could always still do that for more permanent residence, but tents would give so much flexibility.

This would be so useful to characters outside guilds as well. Adventurers could set up their tents in the open spots along the cliffwalls in Orgrimmar, giving the city a more busy feeling and inviting others just by their presence, asking if they can share their cooking fire, etc. It’s just so good!

The sledgehammer to a nail analogy is perfect for how Blizzard approaches issues like this. All we can do is keep sending in those suggestions in the hope that SOMEONE over there is reading them. I like to imagine someone reads them…

Tents would be so immersive for nomadic characters, adventurers, it would stop the old “right then let’s find an inn and pretend these NPCs aren’t here” thing, there are so so many uses I can think of! It would be genuinely awesome.
While we’re on the topic of awesome things, caravan mounts…?
Seriously though, tents would be great as a toy or an item, and would bring so much more to RP. I remember when i first saw the item and I had the exact same reaction - until I saw, “only useable in Draenor”. Such a bummer >.<

I had so many of those tents on my orc, before they implemented the restriction on where you could place them. Now they’re worthless.

I used the tents on my vendor in Stormwind - setting up a proper stall.
Also I used it for RP when travelling. It was great. It’s horribly annoying that you can’t use it outside of Draenor - they could just make it so the buff doesn’t apply outside of Draenor after all.

Maybe we should get our American and MMO-champion friends in on this? If we all loudly complain about it I am certain Blizzard will make them toys?

We gotta be very clear though, that the cooldown must be the same or shorter then the time the tent is spawned. Maybe half an hour would be a good starting point for how long the tent stays spawned with a 15 min cooldown? Or maybe 10 minutes with a 10 minute cooldown?

Anyway, getting carried away.

I have very fond memories of tents in Darkshore in the Song of Soggoth campaign. I think it was Irolas who brought them? Anyway, half the raidgroup jumping into one the moment they were put down was hilarious :D.

I still don’t understand why they made them Draenor only later on, the rp potential of them is so staggeringly obvious, and it would have been easy to limit the buff if that was the intention.

I was discussing it with a friend a while back, how they could make housing into toys, a structure that you can put down somewhere for a limited amount of time, non instanced to avoid the problems with that, nothing too big… but that way make it possible to rp anywhere and create villages for an evening. Turn it into a collector thing, different kind of houses/huts/tents, some fun utensils and what not that you can place inside or next to them.

Yeah it’s a real shame we can’t use them. Just another little thing in a long list of things that make WoW quite lacking in “fun” elements that’d be ideal for RP. While we’re on the subject, most of the toys are rendered useless and nerfed by their cooldown/duration.

I’d like to see them lift that, and I realize that for some of them they’re in place for reasons relating to spam and disruption, but perhaps they could implement a trust type system like they do with the forums or something. Then again that sadly might get abused in and of itself.

The ridiculous cooldowns are a given at this point. No fun allowed. As for the spam and disruption. We already live with the occasional outsider raids and rather than toys, the most damage they can do is play a tauren, chug a giants growth and park the largest possible mount on top of you. Luckily most of that is contained in Goldshire, minus the tauren part. But that’s beside the point. We already live with that nonsense, so I wish we could at least have freedom to access our cool toys to even it out.

Right now I just want my tents though. The limitations they have on them are needlessly strict when they could add so much to our experience.
