I played Demon Hunter back in Legion and didn’t enjoy it because of the controls, I was playing left handed which made the movement based gameplay hard to grasp. Recently though I forced myself to play right handed and DH became much easier and a little fun.
While fun however, the class has a glaring issue. It’s story zones at the start and then the Artifact quests therein suffer from some of the worst, the edgiest and cringe worthy writing I have ever seen. Such as when choose which elf you want as your right hand, the lady watching them fight says
‘Oh no their core ideals are in conflict!’
I just burst out laughing. Before that however you had some cringe lines about ‘controlling their power’ or ‘I almost succumbed, blah blah blah’
The class itself is fun but it’s not enough, I liked the Class Quests in Legion because of the stories they told but the Demon Hunters first few hours are just awful.
Lots of the writing now sucks. 8.0 and 8.1 story was good and all tied together (ignoring alliance bias) but 8.2 looks like the same cheesy unoriginal writing we saw in legion ToS and argus
So bad writing has never factored into the enjoyment of any game? Yeah the story is minor since WoW is more about combat but with such rich lore and iconic characters.
I’d like you think the writers are better than “Oh no their core ideals are in conflict” or when you beat the boss for the havoc artifact he drops the weapons and says that his power has grown beyond mortal armaments when he clearly got his butt kicked while using them.
Demon Hunter are decent fun to play but their backstory makes me miss the days of picking a class and just being thrust into the world before hero classes came with their own introductory questlines that honestly make making a new one a total drag
Good story always help though it won’t be found in a mmo, I also I enjoyed both DK and DH introduction quests. If you don’t like it it’s fine but it’s still your opinion. If because you don’t like a quest/storyline (and a simple introduction), if it makes you delete the character as I said it just mean you didn’t enjoy the class gameplay in the first place as there more to the game than that.
If you did delete because of story only, well prepare to never get a max level with decent progression. You’re in for a lot of deleted characters with BFA.
Blizzard is incredibly bad at depicting lore in-game, that’s pretty much why they needed like 3 short stories and a novel for the BfA lead-up and War of the Thorns. That is the case with DH lore, too. The Illidan novel very nicely depicts the struggles and problems DHs go through / went through to become DHs. I’d definitely recommend the novel. Doesn’t change that they’re quite poorly depicted in-game though, especially the dialogues and emote voice line are just as you described.
