Dx12 is not working properly - broken textures, freezes, flashing (+ bluescreen)

https://i.imgur.com/oQADkwC.jpeg

This is what my characters look like on the login screen. Some are completely black and this isn’t even the worst of it. My graphics card seem to be working fine; it was completely fine the last time I played the game before the patch and there is nothing that could indicate a malfunction.

In game I haven’t run into anything unordinary and nothing is wrong with the graphics but lag is horrific and there are some performance problems in connection with game menus, most notably with the transmog. If I relog, most characters affected by the broken texture display will start showing properly, but those up or down the scroll bar on the right will break instead.

Didn’t accomplish anything with scan and repair or a full reinstall.

And your card is…?

Getting the same thing with different AMD cards on three separate machines running Win10.

I have tried everything I could think of; from clearing cache and shaders to completely reinstalling the game and some of the drivers. I’ve used the most up to date one and versions going back two years to end up with the same result.

When I first launch the game all the characters in the list, across several servers are showing as intended, but after I log into any of them and log out to the selection screen I get this. After I relog some more this character will start showing fine but a handful of random characters on a different realm will break.

Most of the time they will predominantly be covered in black void textures which seems to affect only the smooth armor parts of the character (skin and flat armor), but changing to a different transmog with specific characters does not seem to help in any way.

Surprisingly I am not seeing any corruption or artifacts at all in the game world. Changing to Directx11 does not help in any way and it also significantly tanks my FPS. I have exhausted all the possibilities including game quality settings and optional graphic features.

After seeing no issues at all in a epic battleground, this is what I run into in town.

/console gxrestart fixes the texture for character in question on my screen but ends up breaking most of my UI and causes many layered elements to display as flat green texture. Using /reload ui does not fully fix everything.

I’m seeing all kinds of reports similar to mine, from parts of the screen covered in green to structures and terrain blinking erratically as if it momentarily got covered by a massive black shadow.

If I could run gxrestart on the login screen it would probably fix the issue, at least temporarily.

Yesterday in Undermine open zone I experienced the game slowing down, eventually freezing up and the screen display would eventually reload in a completely bugged state. The longer I would play the worse the problem would get.

I’ve not had any difficulties on the PTR for this patch. The first time I noticed something wrong was about 10 hours after the servers came back up so some kind of a hotfix must have started causing this specific issue.

There’s much more wrong with the game right now. Many players doing ethereal lorewalking in Netherstorm seem to be in agreement that the screen in blinking as a result of corrupted textures (as shown in the link within the post).

A couple of hours of experimenting later I can only conclude that directx 12 is broken in many ways at the moment; from corrupted textures to freezes, even screen flashes.

With some minor adjustments the game can be made to reliably run without any significant artifacts or torn/monochrome textures in dx11, both on character select and game world, but it did not spare me from the green textures on many elements of UI. You can reload UI to get rid of it but over the next half an hour the game could just micro freeze again and immediately start showing the same green squares again.

However dx12 is far superior to dx11 with the benefit of better optimization and performance.

Ten or so relogs later everything is loading up and showing as expected but as soon as I revert to dx12, problems return immediately. Not much more I can do on my end but now at least I am sure that my graphics card didn’t burn out.

I’m on a 4000 series with an older driver version (572.16) and so far i only had the green boxes around some ui elements when switching the Advanced Work Submit option on and off for testing purposes (/reload fixes it).

Oh… and i had one big freeze mid dungeon, like 3-5sec and i thought the game would crash but it returned to normal after that.

Also raytracing shadows are not working for me anymore, just does nothing when i enable them at any quality setting.
In the latest Nvidia drivers it says it’s causing issues in WoW, so maybe Blizz disabled it with the patch.
Can anyone confirm that they stopped working?
Not that it really matters since i have them disabled anyways for performance reasons.

Ray tracing is not working in 11.1.7 right now. Though it seems to be working in the PTR. Sadly texture problem persist.

None of the issues I’ve mentioned are present on fresh launch of the game. Something is manually triggering them, such as the transmog or collection interface or a relog back to the character screen.

The other way textures get corrupted is simply by playing in which case it is almost guaranteed to happen over quarter of an hour, largely dependent on how many times you trigger a loading screen.

Something similar is happening in SW embassy area on demand after using /console gxrestart causing some of the draenei in the area to reload (not a delayed or slow) with broken textures in the same way as is happening on login screen, except over there I cannot force a screen reload.

Changing current realm in the top usually forces a mini reload but does not fix the issue with model textures on the character selection screens and neither does logging off without closing down the game completely.

There is nothing suspicious in my GX text log to indicate a hangup or a crash, as is case for some other people who are experiencing total freezes. Graphics memory is at or near capacity and the game is regularly attempting to defragment and free up some of it. These are not irregular events and it was always like this.

Ok so I’ve got characters on 4 servers. If during last session I logged out on server A, once I restart the game completely and I login to a different character on server B, C or D (going through server change mini reload), that first character I boot up has about 4/5 chance to load up into the world with model textures already completely corrupted.

This is actually the first time since patch that the player model had broken during gameplay.

Wow should clear its shaders on startup for now on NVIDIA hardware as work around till a proper fix is found, clearing shader cache might help it did help last time when there were issues caused by shaders.

Still broken but I have one new addition.

Now my main character on last played server logs into the game just fine, teleports into a dungeon through queue and ends up as a black scratched out model with world map artifacts plastered over it (such as quest and rare mob icons).

Being a druid, quick shapeshift into any of the forms loads up a new immaculate animal model and shifting back into caster body instantly returns my character into uncorrupted state.

But when I log out, that same druid is now corrupted again on the character selection.

Small patch before EU maintenance did nothing to improve the situation.

I tried different versions of the nvidia driver, from highest 576.80 to 576.28, downgrading… nothing helped. Reseting client to default settings doesn’t help. Checking or unchecking checkboxes like " Additional GPU features " (when you scroll down graphics menu) - also didn’t help. Playing on dx11 is a solution, but these are old libraries i have minus ~15 fps drop, + freezes.

Highly recommend you post what hardware you run if you do have issues, i have no issues currently, it would be usefull to find out if the issue only affects NVIDIA gpu’s or also Radeon GPU’s or just few users.

Highly recommend clearing shader cache to see if it helps.

Friend and I just got a bluescreen while transitioning to Fyrakk’s platform in Amirdrassil.

I’d say possibly overheating but I’m in a heavily airconditioned room and the metal isn’t even warm to the touch. I’ve never had a bsod on this machine and I thought it was pure chance until I saw this topic.

We’re both still using dx12 with different issues since patch. Were it not for 20 different problems with the game floating around tech support forum since last week I’d be convinced something is wrong on my end.

people post gx.log report from wow folder (retail/logs/gx.log).
Latest patch broke dx12 and cause some video cards to throttle, draining all memory, and in the end, video card just being restarted by system. This is why you have these green/blue screens. Im pretty much sure if you open gx.log you wont be surprised - all your gpu memory - eaten by wow client.

The easiest way for me to recreate broken or black textures on models is simply to /console restartgx while on Directx 12. It probably won’t work the first time but standing in a town I will quickly notice NPCs and some objects breaking (or fixing themselves if I repeat the command).

It is probably the exact same action happening in the background once I relog, which is the reason why characters on login screen at random bug out and by the time I enter the game world and return to login screen, one problemnatic character will start displaying intended while someone else down the list will break instead. If I spam shapeshift with my druid there’s a small chance that eventually my own character ends up as a black silhouette, only to be fixed by the next time I shapeshift into an animal form and back.

All of this can also happen after a simple loading screen as well. Possibly a model or two won’t load up textures properly. It’s almost never the same NPC or a player and population density does not even seem to play any role in this.

It can’t be my PC because by my fifth reload all of my character list would end up corrupted and remain that way, which isn’t the case. No such issue at all with Directx 11. All of this started occurring with last Wednesday’s patch and in between from servers going down and returning I didn’t change any settings, drivers or update anything including Windows 10 in order to trigger this.

When I first run the game fresh, there are no texture or model problems, before I run into the first load screen at least. After I force close the game and restart, all the graphical problems I may have been experiencing half a minute ago are no longer there (well until the next loading screen or a relog again).

In 99% cases over a multi hour play session I won’t even notice that anything is broken in the game world before I return to the character selection but as I said already, after this first relog issues can start to arise.

this time it’s the wings, but other time it will be his body core, with armor, wings and weapon always unaffected

https://i.imgur.com/XjH4Ruw.jpeg
smooth body textures again, next time they’ll look like an oilslick with rainbows in it, armor and weapons are never affected

After first relog character textures on selection screen become corrupted. In case of addons this problem manifests in the form of default placeholder green textures on addon overlay space.

If you change graphics API to DX11 on that same login screen before restarting or logging back into the game world, all the broken textures get fixed momentarily.

Definitely a problem on Blizzard’s end.

DX11 is a temporary workaround but it is literally unplayable because of at minimum 20% worse FPS while just standing in an empty zone.

When staying on DX12 black character textures will remain after game restart unless you delete the cache folder first before relaunching.

So does the issue also happen in dx11 ?

Despite poorer performance the game is stable and runs without any of these issues in dx11.
