i’ve been playing mages in different mmos for a very long time and thanks to current frost mage design and performance in m+ . I HATE MAGES now.
-defensives have too long cds
-you need to stay in a certain area to get dmg buff from rop and rop is a terrible spell.
-locks and spriests can do higher than what you do in a very short time . you hit all those buttons for nothing.
-it’s so gear dependant so usually it’s bad and unrewarding.
-you’re considered a mobile class but you have to be stationary in a small area for almost half of the fight.
-it’s not hard to play but it’s just annoying
i won’t play this class/spec combo untill it gets a decent rework.
Many people ask me how it feels to play fire mage, i recommend them classes that can do a lot more dps with less effort and do really good damage. I mean the less punishing ones when you make a mistake. I recommend them to just play shadow priest and warlock. Mage is not in a good position right now. Skb’s timings are bad sometimes, I feel like shadow priests’ pets ( a pi dependent class ). However, in the DF, pi’s are getting dk and warlocks. Actually, I would like to write a lot, but think about the last designed 424ilvl ring. It will not give you any increase. Mage seems to have been ignored when designing this ring… Mages are the characters with the biggest damage kit in the game, that’s why we play this class. pure dps classes, but blizzard punishes mages senselessly.
Almost, All of the rogue during an entire expansion took place in the top 3 damage… Mages have been at the bottom and middle for a long time… I started playing warlock and shadow priest as sub characters. It is welcome in both raids and parties. They have pretty good dps ratios.
sp has good utility and lock has better defensives we have no reason to play mage in competitive content…
same for frost actually. i can’t do decent damage without my cds frostbolt hitting 10k after 2 second long cast. sure it’d be better in bis gear but why bother when there are locks that can do great on lower gears too.
i swear to you no one invites mages to groups unless they want bl from dps
I am quite unhappy, too, I used to pretty much always play Mage as my main and now I am not even looking forward to logging in anymore like I used to.
The idea to be very squishy always had the reward of being able to crank out ridicolous amounts of dps, now I feel like I am just squishy and while other classes get to run around dpsing away I am dependent on way too long cooldowns and crap long casts outside the 12s combustion window.
It would be so nice to have some more options in PvP, too, to not get meleed without being able to hold up a proper CC long enough to not get ripped. The sheep heals the foe…woah lol…and every class has so many stunbreaks by now that render my once fav class to garbage feeling.
Makes me quite sad, I used to love my mage…
Ur aware, theres a fire mage on youtube shorts doing 1.6million DPS in burst pulls? x) most classes cant even manage 500k.
saying the class has no cannon is Disingenious at best, If ur fighting for a rework im afraid its going to comedown to gameplay, and not its Potiental, because Mage is Meta in M+ and Still a fairly high achiever in Raids.
Mages skill floor is incredibly high, and its extremely punishing to players who dont reach it. but at the same time, deleting a type of gameplay because its punishing isnt realistically going to happen. Fire has proven to be pretty wildly popular among a audience shown in log counts and more during manyt expansions. it fell off this expansion due tgo the fact mage started off so badly.
Im not disagreeing with you, im not saying Fire mage is Fun… im just saying the problem isnt its numbers.
exceptions are there and ofc. there are great dps numbers with gears going higher that was gonna happen anyway. a fire mage still poorly performs in a +15 key(with that level’s gear) mage is underperforming both in raid and m+, top examples don’t change it . with 10.1 giving mages zero buffs or changes, fire won’t be able to stay on top because other specs will go higher with incoming buffs.
let me rephrase it
it’s not glass cannon unless you’re playing a fire mage in high keys.
a rework is needed even if the mage gets buffed and be the top spec.
frost dk also considered as a non-meta class for m+ but biceps tops the dps charts on every level but that doesn’t change the fact that spec is bad in general.
people just used to see mage in meta that they always say mage is in meta but is it really tho ? is mage doing top dps on most of the runs(not talking about just +25 and higher) ?
because its the classes Designs which cause the issues. not the class.
Fire mage can parse really well in a +15. i’ve seen it happen, its just those fire mages have Premade tanks with communication and are pulling around tghe mages CDs.
same with frost, their a High burst low sustained build.
Well the issue here is, most players Mistake, Meta and PuG meta to be the same. LOTS of comps, Will never work in PuGs regardless of how powerful their shown at the bleeding edge.
Burst Classes, will ALWAYS work better in Premades then they will ever do in PuGs, and that isnt just Fire mage.
Boomkin.
Frost DK.
are 2 other examples, which this has stood in, because their burst centric, which doesnt mesh well with PuGs.
i aint telling u Mage is fine. im just saying, the problem isnt Numbers.
M+ is built on this concept of Tank Routes, and Cooldown management, the problem with that is, it dont mesh with PuG enviroments. when u remove communication from a Enviroment it generally causes groups to format to pulling what they think they can handle, rather then optimising CDs.
if mage didn’t have burst windows with cds in both specs then it wouldn’t be this big of an issue. locks, dhs, rets all can do great dps because they don’t have burst like you said but i still don’t think a premade group can help a mage to do more dps than locks and dhs in lower keys. the meta still stands .i started doing m+ in sl season 4 and mages could do great dps without pre-made groups , right now it’s way harder and i think it has a lot to do with the design. yeah the problem with the dps isn’t ability to do high numbers it’s the ability to do high numbers in most scenarios like other classes do.
edit: like if we check warcraftlogs for last week at +15, it shows that all 3 mage specs are in last 10 of ALL specs as performance-wise
well yes Mages do excel further the higher then key, im just saying around +15 is likely when fire would start lifting because mobs generally live longer at that point.
that is true, but in S4 SL, Mages were also doing like 2x Any other classes DPS lol, Mages in S3 and S4 were Overpowered realistically,
while true… it also puts EVERY CLASS at 100.42 - 100.46 in Terms of Maximum
I.E That would imply Every class in the game is doing the same Damage almost exactly. this is because Warcraft logs at this sorta Point simply Dont work. there are too many people of too many Skill levels being crunched into a Singular Log Profile.
so it Looks like every class in the game does the same thing.
well yeah, u’d think as M+s major selling factor was its Ability to be PuGGed… blizzard wouldntg make things restricted to fully functioning in Premades xD
in the chart i’m checking there isn’t any classes at 100 tho but yeah i get what you’re saying , it shows like there isn’t a big difference lol
yeah that’s a big turnout lol i’ve started pushing keys thinking i wouldn’t need a team to do it on a higher level because it’s not raid but then i saw that every content in this game requires a team if you want to actually enjoy it … yeah i get it it’s an mmo but they could at least give us something as a soloqueue , soloshuffle is the only option i guess which is pvp
M+ Logs are weird, its generally why u dont see many post em xD, they’re very blurry because of the factors in the situation. also PuG v Non PuG meta is a thing unlike such as Mythic raids, which are Premade Only til a Certain Point.
i think boomkin is another Large example of that, It falls down the charts dramatically as U go to Lower and Lower keys, compared to what it is in the full scale of things… i will be damned if i ever see one perform aswell as these charts Indicate.
i think its why u see the same classes Popping up around M+ Metas in PuGs… some classes are just more heavily tied to requirements it seems.
if i took my rogue my boomkin and my mage and Sim their DPS, the DPS Gaps are Larger then what Logs ever imply
Mage and boomy generally sim at 70k, while my Rogue sims at 95k. All the same ilevels all with their respective 4 sets.
i’m sure you’re having more fun playing boomkin than playing a mage it’s a fair comparison since you do same amount of dps with both. mage has very flaws with the biggest one being rune of power which limits a mage’s movement a lot and frost mage’s defensives have long cooldowns i’ve had runs at tyrannical week where i died just because i ran out of consumables and all cds and wasn’t healer’s fault… the spec looks good on paper but in reality it isn’t as tanky as people think it is. it’s not like locks but act like locks because you need to stay in a certain area for almost half of the boss fight. i can do great dps when i use icy veins but after that it becomes miserable. rotation also sucks , there isn’t much you can do to improve your performance because of the talents you pick.
