Folks… I have a problem. I keep starting alts but… they aren’t as fun as monks, so I stop.
What the heck can I play that feels close enough that I won’t hate it? Currently wavering between paladin and shaman, but willing to take other ideas. Mostly I like to heal endgame, but being durable in solo world content is also a plus.
If you say it is not “as fun as monks” it would help to understand what your definition of fun is in terms of playing WoW.
Are you looking for the same feeling in terms of healing gameplay or style or maybe the mobility?
Do you just enjoy leveling?
What is it that you mean when you are talking about playing “endgame”? Does “endgame” mean playing some heroic dungeons / LFR for you? Do you play more PvP?
I am asking this since I might enjoy totally different things compared to you. To me your toon looks like an explorer since I can barely see any statistics about playing endgame PvE or PvP.
Therefore the question for me remains: What do you like so much about the monk?
Also just out of curiosity: Why do you want to play another toon if you like monk so much? You can still do a lot of stuff with this character yet.
Well, if you are interested in healing, I would say each spec (and class) have their uniqueness and style and that is why you prefer RShaman from RSruid, from MWMonk, from HPaladin, from Holy Priest etc. As to damage, if your fun is mobility and burst damage, DH Havoc is quite close but without problem with combo points. Also, DHs are more AoE oriented.
When I compare them they have primary skill to build combo points / energy: Tiger Palm vs Demon’s Bite, spenders: like Rising Sun Kick vs Chaos Strike, AoE: Spinning Crane Kick vs Blade Dance, mobility: Roll vs Fel Rush, Monks healing using direct healing + bubbles vs DH use Soul Fragments. Then Monks have Fist of Fury, which I guess is more a ST skill while DHs have one of thew best AoE on CD: Eye Beam. Obviously there are more differences than that and IMO Monks are better designed with much better fit to building and spending energy / combo points. DH on the other hand are much simpler than that and you will end up repeating the same skills. But still I can see much more similarities then comparing Monk to other classes.
I didn’t… I know they’re “the meta” healer right now, but I’m intimidated by having to know more about the fight to predict when everyone needs to have HoTs rolling on them ^^;
Fair questions!
I definitely enjoy the mobility aspect; I can generally be where I need to be, and while there are times to plant my feet and just cast stuff, I can be out of there pretty quick in a pinch.
I despite levelling I’m a recent transfer to both Alliance and Argent Dawn, which may have killed off my entire history. This character was raiding hard through WoD, starting Mythic Uldir last November, and is currently (more casually) taking steps into heroic BoD, and slowly learning to be a reliable M+ healer.
Endgame to me is thus the highest raid and M+ tiers I personally can manage.
I don’t mind occasionally dipping into a random BG, but that’s far from my primary gameplay
And I’m aware there’s plenty yet to go with this character, but everyone seems to have an alt and I’m allowed one too
(Edit: some funny combo of reply and quote because the forums won’t let me post 2 consecutive replies? Thanks Blizz.)
Awesome. Then I guess I would also tend to go for the restoration druid in terms of healing. I would not worry too much about the Hot issue though since playing the role will already teach you enough so you will already know what type of healing is needed from playing mistweaver. And let’s be real for a moment: You have to learn to predict dmg patterns anyway at some point and it comes pretty naturally with experience. The druid will only focus more on this aspect compared to other healers since you need a little bit more preparation time but this is true for mistweaver as well. So don’t be scared After all, the fun part is just to understand how to manage these scenarios with a different utility set. This actually drove me to playing multiple healers. If you are a holy paladin for example you have to learn that using your CDs often is a key element and dancing around the idea of “Can I manage to hold the CD for now?” is actually pretty fun coming from a MW perspective… well, for me at least.
So if you want this mobile healer class go for the druid and try it If you like tree-huggers this is a plus also
For paladins and shamans you also have a fair element of mobility however it is nowhere near the capabilities of the monk or druid. But if you would like to go for shaman or paladin instead you will simply look for the element of using CDs the right way and often too. If you think that sounds fun (and well, for me it is ^^) go for it. I guess shaman is closer to mistweaver compared to paladin though, however paladin can be a beast if played correctly.
As a glimpse how paladin and druid looks like: This guy plays on a pretty high level, therefore certain things will look pretty easy or there will be scenarios you will be facing which he does not (because his teammates are way better) but maybe this can give you an impression:
If this is too hard to watch for you (might totally be, his (stream) interface is full of stuff), maybe look at this instead for rdruid:
I am sadly not too familiar with restoration shaman yet but there seems to be a couple of guys who play it at a fairly high level. I found this guy on a quick search:
Druud has better HoT’s and bigger burst heals that are not spammable though.
Despite the meta healer that we normal players dont care about, druud is only NEEDEDin 18’s for some specific affixes like tyranical and becomes pretty much needed in bigger keys.
You can do anything you want with any healer while being in the right comp as long as you wont go high.
In the part that you actually have to predict high damage is comming, monk is way more demanding to that subject. Druud can save his mistake alot easyer than a monk can. Dont forget their AoE healing output is simply ridiculous, so ridiculous that youre allowed to do mistakes
No class will ever be as fun as monk is, either if its tanking/healing/dps because of the mobility that makes it fun to play. Now druud has a lot of mobility, sometimes better and this i think is your best call.
Dont be too intimidated. Its really not hard to get into resto druid. You do need to plan more but you probably already know when damage comes in in a raid/dungeon and all you need to do is put some rejuvs out beforehand. And you can do small research before new raid or just learn as you progress. Worked fine for me.
I actually moved away from monk couple months ago
I still miss chi…good old days
But i still find monk a fun healer, just not played it recently.
I do actually struggle to find anything else i like other than these 2 healers. I had all healers geared last xpac and now i just dont feel like it.
I’m not really looking to move away from this monk, just something to have on the side when there’s no dungeon runs happening
Confession; I got a paladin to 30 today. I like the sound of the glimmerdin build. Been holy since level 15 or so, it 2-3 shots everything in the world and handles dungeons like a champ. It may wither before it hits 120, but I’ll see how far it goes. Already have a druid at 87, so that’s a good candidate for picking up if the pally turns out to be too cumbersome.
Yeah good luck with it.
I never felt the itch to play hpally as an alt, because we have 2 hpally mains.
Only thing i liked about them was last xpac and purely in dungeons, cause they could top the whole group up to full with a holy shock, it was crazy.
I personally only really play mobile classes and pally just doesnt fit in there.
I think that you probably find the fun of it in “mobility” like me. Thats why i dont like others and i enjoy so much monk and rdruud. But still monk while inferior and more tricky(M+) its alot more fun to play xD
To be fair, monk probably has the better sum total output. Assuming we’re allowed to stand still long enough to get casts off, we can bring a tank (or careless dps) from 1% to 100% in a respectably short time.
My only real grumble with Mistweaver right now is that we’re just a little bit too easy to burn out, and nearly every M+ wipe I have sums up to “Sorry guys, I’m OOM and you’re all going to die”.
Even something tiny like a 10% reduction in spell costs might solve our longevity problems and make us more desirable for high keys. Right now, I like to use Way of the Crane to get some kicks in and recharge, but that doesn’t work above +10 because I can’t spare those GCDs. Mana Tea meanwhile, is not a recharge, and it’s worthless if used at the wrong time.
Nah…Not in a million years mate
While monk is pretty good on spamming heals and top of someone in a flash druud AoE output is from another planet with alot bigger numbers in ST heals but with a 25sec CD, my 410 druud with bad stats crit 120k swiftmends.
Plz dont come with the druid is dumb easy and mw monk is hard argument. Keeping ReMs up and spamming vivify is not more complicated either.
What Dejarous said applies to any spec, no reason to deny it.
You can pick up a spec in an instant but to know it inside out you will need a bit more time. I learn more details playing a resto druid/monk still.
I learnt from the MDI a lot aswell. I only recently picked druid back up and had no idea i can shapeshift to avoid getting stunned in WM on tree boss.
First time i heard about mass rooting the adds on the ship aswell in SoB.
Or to hybernate the snake stun in ToS to free ppl I only heard couple month ago. And there are so many tricks to playing any spec.
Like the RoP skips with monks.
I played rogue too for couple months and tricks like how to CC truesight mobs and how to open cages without entering combat at all in TD or pull and vanish for helping group pass all comes to mind and needs practiced.
Its obviously not hard to press your healing buttons if you are a practiced healer no matter what spec you play. What matters is what you do beyond that.
As its not hard to play outlaw, but you are not just a dps bot but have to interrupt, cc, stun on the way too which makes you master of the spec along the way. I didnt need more than a week to have the right rotation for dps. Doesnt mean i was an amazing rogue.
I have a friend who heals on an alt and she is too busy looking at hp bars to do much extra dps. She even forgot to use soothe last week, too busy healing so ppl got oneshot by some raging mobs. Things like sharing your attention multiple ways comes with practice so yes, there are tricks to learn for any spec.
It is. When a 406 rdruud heals tyranical triad +17 inside a pug with lowish RIO-EXP ppl without using tranq its brain dead no matter what, do it on a monk and tell me how it feels. That druud was me btw.
Well dont confuse RM with your rejuvs. They are not spammable and they are something you really need to manage. When it comes to a serious damage situation if you dont have at least 2 RM’s and others comming soon M+ group wipes. Also managing mana pool with a monk needs more brain that i use on my rdruud at total.
No sorry, not in Rdruuds at least on M+. In raiding things are the oposite with monk and rdruud. Monk is easyer while druud is more tricky or im a noob yet and cant make it “sing” as others do.
Why you even talk about MDI and their tactics? Their methods are not needed in the low keys we are currently running, most likely if you use this tactics on a pug you will cause a wipe because none of the pugs have a clue on what youre doing.
Yah another hard to master class. ok.
Make a monk and heal triad and galvazzt in tyranical high keys and tell me about practiced healers and how non braindead druud is.
Nice trashtalking your friend in the forums but its completely irrelevant to this.
