The Ashbringer (fan created Legendary questline)

This is my fan created Ashbringer questline for SoD. Blizz, feel free to steal whatever ideas you like

Warning: very long

Context: This is for post-naxx content, where a Scarlet Stronghold raid exists (20+ player raid with naxx+ level difficulty). The final boss in this raid has a ~10% chance to drop the Essence of Pure Holy, a legendary quest item which starts the questline.

Legendary item called ‘Essence of Pure Holy’.
Description: A small remnant of what was once the legendary Ashbringer.
Requires level 60.

Quest 1: “The legend endures”
Bring the Essence of Pure Holy to Tirion Fordring in the Eastern Plaguelands.

Description:
This small essence is all that remains of the legendary Alexandros Mograine, the wielder of the Ashbringer.
It is unknown what exactly this essence means. Perhaps Tirion Fordring could offer more insight.

Quest 2: “A legend, corrupted.”

  • Upon turning in the quest "The legend endures’, tirion starts a short roleplay where he is astounded by the fact that the essence even exists.

Bring the Corrupted Ashbringer to Tirion Fordring.
Corrupted Ashbringer 0/1

Description:

When Alexandros was betrayed and murdered by his son with his very Ashbringer, both the blade and Renault became forever corrupted and weapons of the Lich King.
I do not know if salvation is even possible, , but we must try however we can.

You must raise an army and raid the Scourge stronghold of Naxxramas. Find the Corrupted Ashbringer, no doubt in the hands of one of the Death Knights, and return it to me.

I wish you strength and honor, Paladin.

Quest 3: “The Corrupted Ashbringer.”

Upon turning in the Corrupted Ashbringer, Tirion attempts to purify the blade with the help of the Essence of Pure Holy, but is only partially succesful.
He returns the blade to you, slightly improved. It no longer lowers stamina.

Bring the Partially Corrupted Ashbringer to Archbishop Benedictus in Stormwind.

Description:

It seems my efforts were not enough to fully cleanse the Ashbringer, but I have removed some of the corruption that still lingers in the blade.
Unfortunately, my knowledge and expertise end here. I do not know who can purify the blade.

Seek out Archbishop Benedictus in the Stormwind Cathedral. Perhaps he has the answers you seek.

Good luck, Paladin.

Oh, and should you ever find success in your efforts and restore the Ashbringer to its full power, return to me. I may be able to teach you how to use the blade to its full potential.

Quest 4: “Seek out the Hermit.”

Find Hermit Ortell and ask for his guidance. You only know that he resides somewhere in Silithus.

Description:

Greetings, young Paladin. How may the church aid you?

Archbishop Benedictus pauses for a moment, but his face turns pale as you show him the Corrupted Ashbringer

So the legends are true? The blade still exists? How did you even find it?
Nevermind, it matters not. You mentioned Tirion tried to purify the Ashbringer with an essence of Alexandros himself?
Truly, the Light is omnipotent to its most devout followers. A shame he didn’t succeed fully.

I cannot help you restore the Ashbringer to its full power, but I may know someone who can.

Decades ago, Stormwind was blessed to have the services of a Paladin named Ortell.
For unknown reasons, he simply left Stormwind one day and never returned.
He was last known to reside somewhere in the far-away lands of Silithus, in southern Kalimdor.
I pray he has not become corrupted to whatever evil forces lurk there.

Seek out Ortell and show him what you have discovered.

May the Light guide you, Paladin.

Quest 5: “A quest of Divinity and Hope.”

Find and retrieve all the items that Hermit Ortell demands in his effort to purify the Ashbringer. Refer to his Codex for further instructions.
Empowered Phylactery of the Nameless Lich 0/1
Elementium Bar 0/10
Missing hilt of the Ashbringer 0/1
Essence of the Nether 0/1
Box of Legendary Blacksmithing Tools: 0/1
Tear of Regret 0/1

Greetings, . What brings you to my humble… ‘home’?

Ortell initially looks intrigued, but becomes stunned when you tell him what you have discovered.

So, the legends are real. The Ashbringer - now corrupted - still exists. The fact that you possess it means you retrieved it from the Scourge, or I am standing face to face with one! Ortell laughs.

In all seriousness, it is not impossible to purify the Ashbringer. I believe the knowledge is somewhere in my library.

Ortell searches around his bookshelves and retrieves a Codex of Holy Secrets.

Take this Codex and study it well. Return to me when you have succeeded.
It will be a long and daunting task, . I can understand if you wish to concede your quest. If you do, please be so kind to return the Codex to me. Ortell laughs.

Ortell hands you a mysterious device (an empty phylactery of the Nameless Lich)

You will also need this. Good luck.

(The Codex is a white quest item that can be interacted with to read. It has the following pages):

Page 1: Introduction

This Codex was created by the Highlords of the Silver Hand. It contains all knowledge on how to wield the Light as a weapon and to drive out the scourge.

The rest of the page is missing, and so are most other pages. Fortunately, the relevant pages are still readable.

Page 76: A phylactery of a Lich.

Liches are powerful mages of the Scourge. It is believed they are truly immortal, for their souls retreat back into their so-called phylacteries upon their demise, waiting to be resurrected.
What we discovered is that a phylactery is also an extremely faunt of power, used to achieve great blessings, rituals or incantations.

Take an empty phylactery and fill it with souls. Undead souls, for even the Undead have one.
Minor minions award fewer souls compared to Elite monsters or high-ranking Scourge lieutenants.
Places of power like Naxxramas are particularily rich with these souls.
The maximum power of a phylactery is obtained upon reaching 10000 souls.

Page 83: Elementium.

Elementium is a highly rare and powerful metal found only in Blackrock Mountain.
It is not sure how it functions or what makes it different from more simple metals such as Thorium, but its powerful enhancing effects are undeniable.
The only one who knows how to smelt Elementium into usable bars is unfortunately a Goblin by the name of Krixix. Seek him out and obtain his knowledge needed to smelt the Elementium.

some sections of this page are incomprehensible
“[…] and that caused it to become partially damaged at the Hilt. Which caused no issue in its performance, fortunately.”
"[…] lost during one of our voyages near Theramore [ …]

Page 188: The Dark portal

The powers of the Nether, the powers of shadow and fel, of the arcane and the unknown, are the opposite of the Light and the nemesis of any Paladin.
No respectable Paladin will ever decide to wield such power. Yet, a true Paladin is also not ignorant, and must know the capabilities of the magics used by his opponents.
The powers of the Nether are far out of reach, too far from Azeroth for any mage or warlock to wield. That was, until the warlock Gul’dan opened the Dark Portal and opened a Gateway to Azeroth.
In doing so, he also enabled the mysterious Nether magic to enter the world of Azeroth.

Quest items explained:
1: Ortell hands you an empty Phylactery of the Nameless Lich, a white quest item which reads: Souls claimed: <x/10000>.
Defeating any undead that is level 55 or higher will award atleast one soul. Elite enemies award 2 to 4. Dungeon elites award 3 to 6, with dungeon bosses in Stratholme and Scholomance award 10.
Many enemies in Naxxramas award 6 to 8, and Naxxramas bosses award 100 each. Upon reaching 10000 souls, the item can be used to turn it into Empowered Phylactery of the Lich.

2: Elementium. This is the same Elementium used to craft items like Thunderfury.

3: Missing Hilt of the Ashbringer: this is not the full hilt, just a small piece of it that was damaged long ago.
Players who are on this quest can talk to Nat Pagle and inquire about this, referring to his Journal which mentions the Ashbringer.
Nat Pagle admits he was joking, but that he did find a small hilt of a sword many years ago, which he thought was worthless and threw back into the sea.
Players can Fish anywhere near Nat Pagle or Theramore for a 1% chance to find the missing hilt.

4: Essence of the Nether: Behind the Dark Portal is a new, small interactable object called Nether Essence.
Upon interacting, the player takes 32% of their maximum health in damage every second for 5 seconds. (Non-channeled debuff).
This debuff cannot be cleansed and pierces immunity. The Paladin must find a way - or some friends - to survive this magic.
Upon surviving the debuff, the Essence of the Nether is obtained.

5: Box of Legendary Blacksmithing Tools: Players can talk to Ortell again to inquire about the Tools. He mentions that they were stolen by Furlbogs long ago and he hasn’t seen them since.
Players can find the tools at Timbermaw Hold in Azshara, near the giant gate.
Upon looting the tools, an elite level 62 Furlbog spawns and attacks the player. Defeating the Furlbog awards the tools. (Intended for 3-5 players).

6: Tear of Regret: Players can talk to Tirion to learn more about this item.
It refers to Renault Mograine, where a part of him still deeply regrets what he did regarding Alexandros and the Ashbringer.
The player must equip the Corrupted Ashbringer and enter Scarlet Monastery Cathedral, which triggers an unique event.
At the end of the event, players can loot the Tear from Renault’s corpse.

Quest 6: A legend reforged

Ortell is impressed by your commitment and begins to work on the purification of the Corrupted Ashbringer.

Take the Ashbringer and leave nothing but ash in its wake.

Description:

There! It is finished. Take the Ashbringer and finish what Alexandros has started. Bring carnage and destruction to the Scourge! Leave nothing in their wake but ash!

Ortell begins to cackle

You have made the Silver Hand, the Alliance and all of Azeroth proud today, .

Quest 7: Ashbringer

Bring the Ashbringer to Tirion Fordring.

Description:

You remember that Tirion told you to get back to him if you were to succesfully reforge the Ashbringer. Perhaps you should pay him a visit again.

Final quest: The Ashbringer’s wrath.

Wait for Tirion to finish teaching you.

Description:

You have done it! I cannot believe my eyes! The Ashbringer has been restored to its full power!
Oh, if only Alexandros could witness this moment…

I must admit, , I kept a small secret from you.
Alexandros trained me and a few other Knights how to wield the Ashbringer and the light, in case anything happened to him. He taught me how to wield his weapon with such fury, a single blow could wipe out thousands of undead.

Alas, now I am just a frail old man, nor would I try to take that weapon after all you’ve been through. No, the weapon is truthfully yours.
I just wish to teach you what Alexandros taught me, so long ago.

Speak to me again if you are ready.

Speaking to Tirion shows the option to “Learn Ashbringers’s Wrath”
Use this option to learn Ashbringer’s Wrath and to complete the quest.

Ashbringer’s Wrath: Instant cast Magic abilty
School: holy

Manacost: 8% of base mana.
Requires Ashbringer.

Deal 5486 to 7142 Holy damage to all Undead enemies in front of you.

This concludes the questline, and awards the player with the Ashbringer and the unique Ashbringer’s Wrath ability.
