The best and the worst thing about each expansion

Type your opinion down below:

.Vanilla

Best: Large world - Largest we have ever gotten as it was the base game and no expansion continent matches the grandeur of EK and kalimdor.

Worst: Majority of specs are bad - essentially the hybrid idea doesn’t work in practice because ye in theory it sounds cool that kitty druids heal AND do damage BUT in practice you end up being bad at both. Novice at all, master of none they say.

.TBC

Best: Raiding - The only expansion too truly follow on from the vanilla raiding philosophy and develop it with a less ridiculous raid size, although one 40 man would have been cool imo, no multiple difficulties, no lfr, no titanforging and a MASSIVE attunement process. Just as epic as I like it

Worst: Flying Mounts - I know this is a very 50/50 issue but I personally believe the way flying mounts came in were simply a way of making traversing the world BORING. No obstacles to avoid, dangerous enemies too watch out for, NOPE just fly right over! Some people like this convenience, I think considering outlands was already considerably smaller than EK and kalimdor that it didn’t need flying ON TOP of that. People say you need flying mounts for TBC too work but you could easily add flight masters too said needed locations. Only thing is you’d have a bunch of flightless dragon mounts stomping around.

WotLK

Best: Lore/villain presence - It is my opinion this expac is held in such high regard for the fact alone that people love Arthas and the mention of him even in BFA lore gets people quivering in excitement. The lich king is the only boss who ever had a well established presence in his OWN expansion. Even Illidan, although well established in the RTS, was actually critically lacking ANY presence in TBC, only popping up like once previous too his raid fight. Strangely though they never followed up on this story telling tactic with Deathwing, as he did a illidan 2.0, only popping up like once before his raid encounter.

Worst: LFD - When people say wotlk was the beginning of the end, they aren’t wrong, this happens too be the expansion blizzard merged with activision and you can see the influence in game direction. The ‘‘casualisation’’ shall we say, despite classic being an extremely casual friendly game. Systems like this destroyed the social dependencies that the old game forced and created this vile LFR environment we have today.

Cata

Best: Pre nerf dungeons/ex nerf dungeons for the aesthetic/boss design - This is probably the most subjective. In my opinion, if you take difficulty out of the equation, cata’s dungeons were really cool, even the admittedly lazy troll remakes. The pre nerf dungeons were probably some of the finest blizzard has produced and if only they’d stuck too their guns and NOT nerfed them right after! Such a shame one of cata’s greatest successes ripped away.

Worst: World Revamp - And this was supposed too be a selling point. This took A MASSIVE CHUNK of the developer effort, and it did NOT pay of. Not only did it simplify the old levelling too a significant degree whilst making it an absolute joke difficulty wise whilst making all the questing linear beyond belief, but it also was most likely the BIGGEST contributing factor as too why cata’s end game and patch follow ups were so weak and stretched thin of content. They spent all their development processes doing these 2 MASSIVE continents again! I always think cata will be the biggest expansion with the most effort and development load with the worst pay off.

MoP

Best: Reputations - BEFORE YOU SAY IT, IK about the dailies!! Ok?? BUT despite the overflow of dailies, the MoP reps were still the most diverse, and engaging reputations we’ve seen. I mean it’s better then the emmisary system we’ve had since legion. It’s more creative then just sticking a tabard on and doing content not specific too the reputation. MoP gave us the tillers, the cloud serpents and even shaohao was a grind you could do when you wanted some down time. If the dailies had been less, this could have been very fun to do.

Worst: LFR - Although coming too us at the tail end of cata, it only was in since launch from MoP onwards. At least cata had good early raid tiers. Not only were a couple of MoPs raids on real difficulties mediocre at best, but then you throw 4 difficulties into the mix and have a easy, entitled for all mode and you have the reason all value and purpose of raiding for most is gone thus the all time low of raid participation ever in the game.

WoD

Best: The continent - Although Vanilla has the best continent imo, Draenor is the best EXPANSION continent the game has seen. It is so beautiful and the music is amazing and the only disappointing part is that there was barely anything to do in them! Additionally the continent is so big! Also the rares that dropped mounts spread out over all the zones made finding them and camping out in the world exciting and I wish they’d do this more. TLPD, aeonaxx and void talon really are my cup of tea.

Worst: Garrisons - No, not apexis. At least apexis made you do something. Garrisons are literally the definition of anti content. The goal of the mission table is too send NPCs too do content for you!!! That concept is absolutely insane and meanwhile you just sit, and probably log out because there was NOTHING TO DO. A real shame…

Legion

Best: Artifacts - Artifacts were like our baby that we had to take care of as it grew up through out the xpac. It was fun during the early life span of the xpac too gain the traits and late expansion it was very fun to do the mage tower amongst other content too unlock all the cosmetic appearances! The HUGE problem with artifacts though is it introduced this never ending pit of AP that you could grind with no end in sight. Realistically there should be an end point for any game, so that players feel like their actions matter, and this was a huge demotivater for players too grind AP and also it created this system too be re used for BFA and possibly the future such as the mission table has stuck with us since WoD.

Worst: RNG - I think RNG reached a peak in this xpac. It had been building up for years. It started with welfare legendaries in MoP, establishing thst legendaries were no longer for the hard work put in by neck beards uniting under one banner, then LFR established that gear had no value anymore, and that item level was too become the only reward in power from harder content, and then thunderforging, which became warforging mutated once again legion into titanforging. Titanforging combined with the completely random legendary drop system completely destroyed any sense of EARNED REWARDS. Now you will beat the game through PURE LUCK like a casino!! And now in BFA, instead of fix legendaries they just remove them, and instead of listen too the players and remove titanforging, they keep it. Titanforging is probably the worst thing for the health of raiding rn.

BFA

Best: Allied races - Honestly I struggled too think of something, Almost everything about BFA is terrible. Allied races, although awful too level for heritage, do add a much more consistent way for us too get new races with cool animations and druid forms/shaman totems. Kul tirans had a good amount of effort put into them and to see more added before BFA’s end would be nice.

Worst: Copy paste of legion but worse - That is quite a broad negative, I’ll explain.
World quests - copy pasted system with no legendary chance from emissary so they feel extra pointless and again are just random tasks, additionally they take longer than in legion.

Raiding - Exact same as legion with no removal of titanforging

No pvp world quests - Were at launch in legion, only just coming now in 8.2 for BFA

Classes - Although both were pruned, Legion had artifact ability and no GCD change, BFA has GCD change and artifact abilities either removed or made into talents instead of baseline, thus losing something else from the class

War campaign - Same quality if not less than ONE classes order hall campaign except instead of like 13 campaigns, we now get 2, and the early half of the war campaign isn’t even voice acted (for the most part)

Azerite gear/tier sets/artifacts - They replaced 2 systems with one, and that one isn’t even good. Same crappy AP grind from boring activities, but for way less cool item, with rng since you have to get the good trait items from drops first anyway unlike artifact which was baseline and then on top of that they gave us armour wide tier sets instead of class wide and azerite gear instead of tier bonuses. Just bad is all I can say!

And then the NEW not copy pasted features of BFA are either cosmetic or crap. Allied races are cosmetic. Islands and warfronts are crap!

Vanilla:
Best: was something new, so it had that newness to it, plus a good way to make friends.
Worst: the lag at times and compared to what we have now, no where near as superior in graphics, addons etc.

TBC:
Best: Flying was introduced
Worst: I really did not have any issues with this expansion

Wrath:
Best: the storyline was epic, this was WOW at it’s best storytelling wise & LFD
Worst: I hated nothing about this expansion

Cata:
Best: New races
Worst: Storyline was not really that great, seemed rehashed and rushed

MOP:
Best: Classes were the best they ever were and have been in WOW, LFR, ton of content, lots to do here, and good story
Worst: The tillers grind

WOD:
Best: The zones looked great & Garrisons because it was an attempt at player housing, while they were lacking in some areas, I still find myself going there, if they were executed differently they would have been ok
Worst: Garrisons because of the way they were executed, plus the lack of things to do, Ashran, and the seaport build behind the garrison, which did not really serve a purpose, introduction of pathfinder system

Legion:
Best: lore, story, class hall campaign, and artifact weapons
Worst: the grind for artifact power, the timegating of Suramar, Surmar’s set up, great city but you have to play as a rogue to see it, if I wanted to be a rogue I would roll one, Argus was too short, the story could have been longer and you cannot fly there, continuing pathfinder

BFA:
Best: Drustvar is one of the best zones in all of WOW, plus the story line, scaled down mission table so you are not too dependent on it as you were in Legion, easier to get gear

Worst: where do I begin? Lack of story and engaging content, grind to get allied races, grind to level up allied races, warfronts are boring and not worth the time, island expeditions are boring, classes are just 3 buttons at this point to push, change in pet charms for no reason other than to grind to get the new ones, war campaign is too time gated and thin, storyline does not make sense in BFA, patches have been thin, no pvp vendor, and lack of custom gear sets

Worst: I’m tempted to say everything else, but back then that didn’t matter so I’ll say unreal requirements for many things

TBC:
Best: A’dal, that thing was a wonder and I always felt in awe whenever I saw it, it was the best thing in TBC for me.
Worst: SL/SL locks and resto druids, I played warrior and only was interested in arena for the gear and fighting SL/SL locks and druids boring.

Wotlk:

Best: Pvp, especially world pvp in storm peaks.
Worst: Lich king’s death, what a waste of a villain, he should’ve been the boss of the 6th or more expansion instead of killing him so early.

Vanilla:
Best - The feeling of this vast, unexplored and dangerous world. And I’m just a small part of it.

Worst - The Westfall Harvest Watchers. They were not forgiving to young me.

TBC:
Best - For me? A toss up between Flying Mounts (unpopular, I know) or Sunwell Plateau. Finally getting my Netherwing Drake was one of the most satisfying moments ever. But! I loved the feeling of slowly advancing across Quel’danas, conquering new territory and seeing the world change and DEVELOP as a result of my actions. New quests, new buffs, new looks, new enemies… Just top notch.

Worst - Hm. Tough one… I guess the fact that the raids weren’t even slightly gated? It was possible to go through the entire games raid content (bar Sunwell Plateau) from launch. And I think that caused burnout for some people, as once Illidan died… Well, where do you go from there? Just put it on farm.

WotLK:
Best - Amazing story. Amazing music. Amazing aesthetic.

Worst - I kinda liked LFD when it first dropped (I was naive, I didn’t forsee the consequences), so for me? I’d have to say… Argent Tournament, from a story POV? It made zero sense to me to be killing each other in ICECROWN on the Lich Kings DOORSTEP. When he showed up and called Fordring out as an idiot for doing exactly that? Yeah… Yeah we deserved that.

Cata:
Best - Hoo boy. I mean, I quit in Cataclysm, soooo… I suppose Deathwing flying around the world torching stuff was cool. He flew overhead and incinerated an alt I was leveling once in the Plaguelands. For me that was one of the coolest things in the entire expansion which is… Telling.

Worst - Everything.

MoP
Best - I actually enjoyed Rep in MoP. I had a lot of fun maxing out ‘The Tillers’ and ‘The Order of the Cloud Serpent’. Isle of Thunder was also great content in my opinion.

Worst - We began the on-running trend of ‘revolving door Warchiefs’ and ‘The Horde are the bad guys’.

WoD
Best - The leveling experience was the best I had ever experienced, at that time. Legion later beat it, but I recall liking leveling in WoD very much.

Worst - There was nothing to really do after leveling.

Legion
Best - Artifacts BABY! I had the Ashbringer! I genuinely felt like a hero of legend. Come at me, demons, I am here to save Azeroth and chew bubble-gum! And I’m all outta gum.

Worst - The endless, bottomless, yawning pit of AP grinding. It has no end. There is no respite. The number just continues to grow.

BfA
Best - I… Like… Uhm… Leveling was fun? The zones are okay. The raids were pretty decent too… Hm. No! Wait! I got it - It’s the quest that lets me kill those DARNED TURTLES!

Worst - It feels like a big step back from Legion. My plot engagement isn’t that high. They took a lot of Legion’s systems and make them worse - at least the Artifacts helped masque the Class pruning. Looking at you, Heart of Azeroth. GIVE ME MY ASHBRINGER BACK!

CTRL+F doesn’t disappoint.

I don’t get the whole panda hate, it was something new and as long as the content is good I don’t care. Additionally I wanted pandaren in the game because they were there in wc3 and several other points before MoP. In the barrens, in the WotLK in game shop and there is even a video out there of a guy in WotLK climbing the mountain range of the locked off area in stonetalon mountains and finding a chen NPC using the store pet model but larger. However it is likely probable that one is a private server.

Because people are immature for their age. How many other MMOs can you find and play as Pandas and Tauren? Because everyone reduces them to “teh furry”, it really speaks lengths how simple-minded people can become. Before I play the 5th human, dwarf or elf, I rather have something fresh and unique.

Ditto for the “fat” Kul Tirans. You people don’t realize how good you have it with the diversity, really. Not everyone wants to play the very old and clichéd character trope for the sake of being the ideal beauty idol.

Forgot about Cata!

From what I have played:

WotLk:

Pros: Contrary to popular opinion, I enjoyed LFG. Lore & Story was cool, collectables (eg drake mounts) were very enticing. Dailies were also engaging

Cons: Some of the levelling zones were a bit iffy to me (Howling Fjord, Zul’drak) but I don’t think I was yet playing the game closely enough to find too many faults

Cata:

Pros: Got rid of a lot of archaic mechanics and introduced QoL updgrades (e.g, no weapon skill, reasonably priced dual spec). Dungeons were fun - post-nerf less so, but still quite fun. I also quite liked the guild level system, though I understand why it was eventually removed.

Cons: New zones weren’t very engaging after completing their quests. Story was quite bad and felt Horde-centric. Eventually I got bored and quit until WoD

WoD:

Pros: I liked the progression and general idea of the garrison and it’s ownership. Garrison invasions were also quite fun. Lots of collectables.

Cons: Dungeons were so-so. Like in Cata, very little content to keep me engaged. Story was quite a disaster.

Legion:

Pros: artefact weapons were great, and the class hall storylines were amazing, even if some were heavily re-used from others (cough priest hall cough). I particularly liked being able to see how old locations have changed.

Cons: RNG, mostly. I also thought that the story was over-blown for what we received.

BFA:

Pros: Questing experience is amazing. Music is amazing. Contrary to popular opinion, I liked island expeditions, and I feel like this expansion has more to do than the others I’ve played minus WoTLK.

Cons: Story is absolutely terrible. The RNG on Azerite traits is too wide and often times I’ve had to D/E what would have otherwise been a good upgrade but didn’t have the right traits, and the vendors with specific gear doesn’t always have the right traits that you’d want either.

Vanilla:
Best - The world felt big and getting a mount and levelling up felt rewarding
Worst - Grindy as hell

TBC:
Best - Exciting to go into a new world to explore it
Worst - Hellfire peninsula was not a good way to to start, it’s the worst zone in outland.

WotLK:
Best - Storyline, Arthas, Lore, it was all on point.
Worst - Boring Tundra is yet another bad starting zone

Cata:
Best - There were some interesting concepts not that they really paid off and the dungeons as hard as they were, look gorgeous.
Worst - The zones suck, when levelling I always skip Cata. Least favourite expansion.

Pandaland:
Best - Music and continent are both gorgeous
Worst - I do have a Pandaren but they are just bloody stupid and tonally don’t fit into the rest of WoW.

WoD:
Best - No flying at first. it made going into zones a lot more meaningful and epic.
Worst - There was bugger all to do in this expansion.

Legion:
Best - Suramar and Artifact weapons. Suramar was an amazing zone to go through and Artifact weapons were actually really neat.
Worst - Legendaries. I didn’t like the system at all nor the fact that for the mage tower, some classes required them to be able to complete it.

BFA:
Best - Cutscenes and cinematics are on point. there’s lots of them and they’re some of the best that have been done
Worst - the content of this expansion is really really boring.
