I know pvp is a dying game but it’s time for blizzard to shape things up a little bit for once since SL. Yesterday, I was watching AWC qualifiers for the first cup no surprise RMP dominated and that’s because of the current state of mage and more precisely frost mage. The only counter to mage is a better mage
In terms of damage it’s strong very strong and it has a lot of spells that are instant which in pvp is huge if you ask me. Also according to details breakdown 40%+ of their damage comes from frostfire bolt dot. Damage itself would be fine if it was their only strenght but it’s not this class has no weak point. Also, according to what I read frost mage is far from being the “hardest” spec to master in terms of damage.
Now let’s dive into mage spells:
Icy veins : One of the longest offensive cd duration in the game almost 30% during which your haste and frost damage are increased. Also makes you immunte to interrupt on frost spells.
Polymorph: Mana is no longer an issue so it can be spammed during a whole arena game infinetely and just rotating target waiting for DR to reset. there is a pvp talent that makes polymorph to no longer heal the target and also increase versatility by 12% when a target is polymorphed. 12% vers is huge considering the uptime on this is at least 75%
Ice block (2 charges): Everyone knows Iceblock it makes you immune to everything for like 10 seconds and while you’re inside you’re also basically full healing yourself. It can be dispelled by priest and warriors but you can interrupt these classes to make it not dispallable.
Ice Barrier: Which gives you a good absorb shield but guess what in pvp you have talent that increases absorb by 100% and have an additional effect, but last 4 sec. Prismatic Barrier If the barrier is fully absorbed, your next Blink or Shimmer within 15 sec grants Invisibility and immunity to damage for 3 sec. 30 sec CD which is pretty strong if you ask me. (btw cd can be reduced and is empowered when playing frostfire hero talents)
Blink (2charges): Everyone knows blink but some people may not know that it removes stuns and roots. 15 sec CD.
With blink you have to keep it mind that frost mage basically snare you all the time with all their spells.
But these days blink is no longer used to kite it’s used to chase or even just charge like a warrior with the use of
Snowdrift: summons a strong Blizzard that surrounds you for 6 sec that slows enemies by 70%. Enemies that are caught in Snowdrift for 2 sec consecutively become stunned for 4 sec.
Yes you read this correctly a 4 sec AoE stun.
You also got the Alter time which basically is a heal + blink combined in a 1 minute CD.
Dragon breath: which is instant CC on a 32sec CD.
Blast Wave: 21 sec CD can be used to interrupt
PvP talent Icy wall: which is basically a wall that you create that blocks sight.
Yes I think that’s a big list already I might have forgot some spells or modifiers but you get the point. Mage (frost mage) has always been one if not the strongest spec in pvp the problem is that has kinda kept the same amount of controls and damage over the year but has become a god damn tank and that’s the issue.
The difference between a mage today and a mage in cata or mop is that if you failed you’re dead. Today mage make mistakes? It does not matter because they have so much cds to recover it’s all right. And if they don’t have any cds well their teammates will cover.
Don’t let this fall into the abyss with Nzoth send help
