It’s been a few weeks now that Shadowlands has been released, and with that the removal of the well-known PvP Scaling system. Me and 2 friend have been playing 3v3 arena from the start of the expansion and feel like we’re doing something wrong. The composition we’re currently using is: MM hunter/ Ret Paladin / Resto shaman.
For some reason, the incoming damage from every team we face is so high that there is no time to even cast a cc as a healer or do anything other than see somewones health go down from literally 100% to 0% in 1 second. We 3 are all around 185 ilvl stacked with vers and figured that it might be the gear since we’re only facing enemies with 28k health or more.
Played 30 games so far and we only managed to win 7 of them, this led to some questions:
Do more people have the same problems with arena and/or PvP in general?
Has the game changed so much that having around 185 ilvl stacked with vers is
nothing? And people with 30k hp are deleting us purely in terms of better gear?
Do you guys have any tips for us or our comp in particular which can help us out?
Even though we love PvP it can be quite frustrating to lose like we did most games, we’re just wondering what’s happening and if people have the same thing.
Me and my DH Havoc mate had the same experience on a shorter scale (3 games in rated 2v2), all lost in around 10 seconds. We enter the arena, get bursted/cc and die in 3 seconds, the other tries to stay alive and dies a bit later. I know I’m undergeared (170) but my mate is 178 and die almost as fast, we have no time to do any CC or damage and feel like we’re just playing against 220+ players all the time who just two shot us. It’s very disheartening because I read a lot of info on my class to be effective in Arenas and then you don’t have time to learn because you get insta deleted.
stun healer, trap healer burst dd. repeat.
Ret has insane offheals, bop, freedom, sac, sanc. Use them. You can run away when you are dying because you can kill in every stun into trap setup at any time
hutner/dh is a very bad comb and 3 games is no practise.
What goes well with DH ? I also play Paladin, DK at 60 and have many other classes at 50 waiting to up. It’s her main and the class she knows the most so it’s not going to change from her side.
Is there a website with guides to Arena meta, tricks and stuff that we could use ?
Also yeah 3 games is nothing but we knew it wasn’t going to work with our ilvl, just testing the waters. Because in BfA we had wins way more often and games were less bursty.
The dmg is actually so high that you have to almost use something in the opener or you are dead.
Every game is almost full of disc which increase the dmg even more with dark arch and their dmg.
Most of the team I played against try to cheese someone randomly or even go through Def cd and hope to kill the target.
Unfortunately it is really hard to deal with the meta if you don’t have experience already cause you got deleted before understanding what is going on and or what happened
Best advice I can give you is to q and try if you can to record your game to see what you can do better.
Thanks. We reached about 1600 in BfA so we’re not that skilled in PvP, however we’re casuals and always play below average in terms of gear and meta. We’re amazed to see like 9/10 teams that we face having at least a few K’s more hp. Rarely see people areound 26k/25 which is what we have even though this is probably not the the issue.
My friend is using most of Pally’s utility and we always try to setup our CC’s on the healer, stun and scatter shot for example. Our healer however is often gone within a few seconds, or manages to survive the first seconds of a game (by bubble or so) just to see one of the dps get almost insta killed quickly after. Looking at logs we see people critting for 10-15k, which is like 60% of our total health and wonder if being healer is wlrth it at all. No way to anticipate on such crits most times. As an example our healer just got destroyed by a warlock with a 15k crit by Unstable affliction, which is a dot…
Currently played about 40 matches in total, and i know that aint that much but to me it gives somewhat a view about how fast paced the game currently is. Trying to improve and maybe get some 200 pieces in the upcoming weeks.
Good idea to actually record our gameplay and rewatch it! It is defenitely hard for us to comprehend what’s going on in a 20 second fight where our healer is deleted in literally a second. It often feels like playing a healer isn’t really a good choice in fights like these, enemy team hitting for 10-15k crits which is 60% of our total health is hard to anticipate on.
Sometimes frustrating since we would like games where smart outplaying the enemy is whats required. Instead we often feel like there is less to none skill required to how most of our games go, but this is probably not how we’re used to arena.
Thanks for replying, the advice and letting us know that this is just how PvP is working right now!
A ret palafin killed me (holy paladin) during a 5 second HoJ in 2v2 from 100% through divine protection (20% damage deduction) with 0 help from his healer. I can only imagine how stupid 3v3 is right now with 2x dps going full zug zug on the same target. Im just hoping things get a little less silly when everyone is above 30k hp.
As a casual you’ll never have fun with a PvP-system like this… that’s it.
“Wondering why developers gave PvE players 4x difficulties (with different mechanics) for each PvE content, themed raid tiers, solo content etc etc…and for PvP players just some badass recolored tiers, mounts and mind-blowing titles and… vendors”
I lvled this SP, got some honor gear and jumped into arena, got rekt by everything in my first 100 matches it’s slowly improving.
All you can do is just keep queueing.
Take a second after the match to understand what happened and what you could’ve done differently, then que it up again. Repeat 1000 times, 40 matches is absolutely nothing. There are people who tryhard arena every day, for decades. Just imagine.
This. 185 is nothing. Difference of 15 itemlvl ist huge.
Ontop the game seems unbalanced. The game itself is faster, even after further balancing - fast paced games seems to be the design goal. The season Just started, a lot of higher exp players are low rated or start playing.
Playing healer actually has to be so unfun especially in 3s.
Even if you are good you can get deleted if no peels and assist and sometimes even with.
There is plenty of games when I need to almost swap someone in the opener =s
It’s a hard time for beginners to put a feet on arena right now imo, but if you learn what is the most scary (spec/abilities) you’ll start to climb for sure.
from a low xp non fotm class perspective yes its brutal atm in arenas, not a good time to be learning.
im finding if we win it takes setup after setup and surviving by skin of our teeth, if we lose its usually pretty fast and definitive. We are hoping for a bit more balancing and toning down of the excessive burst or we will probably stop playing tbh as we just dont have enough fun.
they miss a huge mistake anyone may do right now. Going to arena with his pvp gear. Right now PVE geared players (205-210 ilvl) have created a wall 1600-1800. You cannot compete 20 level gear above you. They even have about 20% vers as you with your pvp gear.
just need to respect enemy cooldowns and use your defensives too but no at 10% hp. use them earlier. Normally as ret mm you should almost always have the opener. Start with trap on healer and use all your offensive cooldowns
nah UA does not crit 15k but when your healer dispells UA it can hit him for 15k if it crits. Better not do that when he has not full hp.
not really no. Im 193 and 190 and i while of course there are some people with 200+ its not the majority and isnt really the reason you lose most games. Especially not on low rating. On high rating it can make the difference in a few weeks when everyone has 210+
when the enemy team uses all their cooldowns it can happen that you need to use a cooldown(swap) too. Thats how the game works.
nah thats just an excuse. You can easily play 2k+ with 184 gear. Not all people at 1600 have 205 or even 210 ilvl. Most have 185 - 195 especially on low rating.
When your mate used already his cd and I have to swap and he still dies through it’s not supposed to work like that.
Not saying you should be unkillable in a Def cd but when you have to use 3 to barely save him it’s completely stupid and even more when it happened in less than 4sec.
