To be fair, there is now some scientific debate over thisâŚthe closest evolutionary relative of smallpox (an Orthopoxvirus) is Taterapoxvirus, which infects the naked-sole gerbil, a rodent of the African dry forestsâŚwith camels, horses and monkeys, also being possible links in the zoonotic chain.
