The Horde and The Alliance Lore

Hey everyone.
World of Warcraft has a LONG lore about everything, and as a new player(3 months), its kinda hard to learn everything.
I’m still thinking about what faction should I play, Horde or Alliance.

Which one is more “moral” at this point? I know the horde led by the council is more moral then the past, but still, who has more moral beliefs? about freedom, rights, Justice?
Horde Or Alliance?

Greetings, it is always great to see new players!

I’m not sure whether I can answer your question, but I will try to provide a bit of context to the two faction.

The Alliance at the moment is kind of liberal monarchy, in which the human kingdom(s) took the leading position and the rest of the races, at least their leaders are more like advisors to the human king.
People usually associate negative things with monarchies, but in this case there is generally equality and justice and personal freedom.

Unless you are a gnome. Then it is every citizens right AND obligation to punt you.

Morally I would say that the current alliance is on the good side, they fight to protect their people, while they are not ruthless to their enemies, but in the past certain prominent member were crossed the grey area.

Now onto the horde. The horde has a loooong history and when they crossed to Azeroth (the orcs as they are the original horde) they were generally the bad guys. What you however have to understand that first, the horde was extremely fractured with many clans, traditions and cultures, so they did not have a set of morals or goals.

At the moment the horde is still extremely diverse, kinda like a melting pot and I would say the different races have different morals there. However the horde is not ruled by a single person anymore, we have a council made up from the prominent leaders of each race. I would say the horde possess the same freedoms as the alliance (personal freedoms at least) and they are no longer the bad guys.

Now the horde is the collection of the people that used to struggle with their situation and joined a collective to make their lives easier.

Technically I would say that the Alliance HAS the moral high ground, but the difference in that area is neglectable.

Leguna pretty much nailed it precisely, but I’ll chuck my two penneth in.

Alliance certainly has the moral high ground. At times they have dragged themselves low, then picked up again, but -generally- speaking, they are not the expansionist power some Horde leaders have thought they were. During WC3 there was a bit of that going on, and during Cataclysm they did go all ‘Manifest Destiny’ on the Tauren, but in general, they are a non aggressive group.

The Horde however, started off with the absolute low moral ground, and on occasion does raise itself up, only to tumble again. It isn’t (As a body politic, not just the individual races) inherently an ‘Evil’ organisation, but equally it has a much more “The Ends justify the Means” mentality, which have led to some bleak actions being taken in it’s name. Both sides have done good and bad, but the Horde has done far more of the bad.

This has now all gone out of the window, with the recent events.

The Horde has (finally!) abandoned the Warchief system that was shackling them to genocidal maniacs recently, and what we seem to have is a Council, that was instated by a Triumvirate of leaders, (Baine, Lor’themar and Thrall) that every other race agreed with.

Ironically if we were to look at this through modern eyes, the current Horde rulership is a more enlightened one than the Alliance one.
Whilst Anduin is a good boy, his absolute monarchy, as liberal and benevolent as -he- is, could set the precedent for a repressive rapacious tyrant to succeed him with those powers, Whereas the Horde rulership kind of makes sure that unless -all- the council are maniacs, that such things would be kept in check, and not possible.

Given that they formed the Council to step away from the idea of a bloodthirsty Tyrant controlling everything, and the longevity of two of it’s Council members in term of lifespan, they’re not likely to forget that fact.

So the Horde has a more enlightened and representational form of Government than the Alliance, however with past deeds, the Horde is definitely on the back foot when it comes to morality.

If you wanna play the “Good guys” Alliance is your pick.

The horde isn’t really “The bad guys”, certain leaders making stupid decisions.

Its all very muddy now in terms of what the horde is now… At least in my humble opinion

If you want morals, go Alliance. Horde do massive genocides every expansion and their quests often involve raiding peaceful villages to kill everyone.

Where as alliance mow down hordes of unarmed goblins laughing whilst they go splat and raid peaceful villages to kill everyone.

On the whole both were fairly balanced…

The Alliance frames its “atrocities” on the necessities of fighting against the horde, which despite whatever the current peaceful intentions are just one step away from falling back to blood thirsty conquerors.

Whilst the Horde frames its “atrocities” on the fundamental requirement to survive against the alliance, which despite whatever peace is currently on offer is just one step away from going nope you’ve gone to far and prepares to squish the horde underfoot.

Of course it has been decided on occasion that the current horde warchief needs to be blood thirsty conqueror to advance the whole plot of the game, and in the process of doing so they always fracture the horde so the player (and usually all the faction leaders) still have a moral high ground to stand on…

This is somewhat intentional… neither side is the bad guys, both are good with a few instances of morally grey, or justifiably evil (or deposeble warchief).

As with any real conflicts, the good guys end up doing bad thing, and the one who is right all comes down to your perspective.

Garrosh’s horde bombed a druid neutral meeting point with children and non-combatants inside as well as an entire human city with non-combatants inside. He, along with many orcs, used the power of an old god to corrupt an entire zone in Pandaria, enslaved animals, people and old god minions to wage war on the world.

Then, the horde usurp garrosh, put voljin in place. He lasts for a week then dies in Legion. They replace him with Sylvannas, an infamous crazy b*tch and then she goes and does the exact same thing garrosh did in Pandaria all over again during BFA and now she’s literally trying to help a death god consume the planet.

I wonder which faction is worse?

Blizzard tried to stop an evil horde 3.0 by kicking out the last evil faction leader Gallywix sort of randomly I might add.

Oh an btw the horde was founded on an army of orcs led by gul’dan, who served the Legion and powered their portals by destroying an entire planet and slaughtering thousands of innocent Draenei women, children and non-soldier men.

Oh and the Undead since Vanilla practice live experimentation on innocent victims, torture them, turn them into abominations and undeads and also use outlawed chemical warfare known as the plague. And they also have auschwitz-esk concentration camps with prisoners buried up to their necks in dirt with ghouls who rip their heads off and eat them. They also waged war on Gilneas before they even officially joined the Alliance therefore making them an innocent victim in the war.

And the blood elves drained the energy from Naaru to become Paladins initially back in TBC. You can see this said by devs themselves in TBC collector’s edition CD video on Blood Elves.

What did alliance do?

We had 1 dude running concentration camps for the orcs, when they were ravaging EK and kalimdor slaughtering innocent villages in a fel blood lust.

Other than that, we had Arthas, who the second he turned bat sht crazy and tried to purge strath, EVERYONE turned against him and called him out, unlike hordes who take ages to call out their fellow member’s bullsht.

This is my faction helper:

Hey, ever wondered which faction, Alliance or Horde that fits best for you? Here’s the answer!

The Horde Faction:

  • Do you prefer stories and adventures where everything goes your way?
  • Do you consider Thrall being a peaceseeking traitor?
  • Are you a sadist who takes pleasure in hurting Alliance citizens?
  • Do you want to see all of the Alliance dead, burned and utter destroyed?
  • And do you prefer a nutball faction leader?

There’s no doubt, you will fit right in the Horde Faction!

The Alliance:

  • Do you like playing in a tragedy world struggling for your existence?
  • Do you seek a peaceful coexistence with all races of Azeroth?
  • Do you regret your past actions and bias?
  • Do you like the challenge of struggling with allies who do not share your peaceful intentions towards the Horde?
  • And most important, are you a masochist?

You must be mentally strong for being able to stay up with all the sorrow and pain, and you will need your strength. The Alliance Faction isn’t for the weak!

Yeah, OP, I refer you to the earlier serious answers, rather than the usual comedy people ragging on the other faction we all knew this would descend into! :stuck_out_tongue:

only alliance spies play vulperas

One thing I forgot to add:

Horde players generally view what has happened with a bit of logic and reason, they realize that bad things have happened, but know Alliance have done bad things too.

Where as some Alliance players are completely blind to everything around them especially whilst murdering noncombatant horde civilians… I mean just because they are cowering and not holding a weapon right now…

any examples that didn’t follow a horde massacre of spectacular proportions?

He was possessed by the Jailer, as was revealed in SLs. So when it comes down to it, no matter how someone may try to say both did equally bad things. The horde have infact been the only real bad do-ers.

Using that logic though, we can’t rlly blame horde for Garrosh as he turned on them too for his own ‘true horde’ and also old god influence there.

I think the distinguishing factor was that when arthas tried to purge strath, every1 insta called him out but with Garrosh, the horde stood by for way too long and participated.

It is amusing to see all the very biased responses to this thread from both Factions

Alliance.

Alliance.

Alliance.

The Horde used to be this:

“Driven by unity, the Horde consists of a coalition of disparate races and cultures loosely joined in an alliance of convenience against a hostile world that would see them destroyed”

Unfortunately since very early stages of Vanilla it became clear that this image was going to be torn apart, with the addition of Sylvanas and the Forsaken.
Which proved recently it was a mistake.

Even though the Horde has a council, Activision Blizzard is very famous for villain batting the Horde every time they need a conflict.
As demonstrated recently with Teldrassil events.

Cheers.

It’s like asking a bunch of Americans whether the Republican or the Democratic party has the “moral high ground”.
