The latest patch is crashing video cards

Event ID 153 from source nvlddmkm.
Driver version 566.36 i.e. the driver before Nvidia broke everything with the RTX5000 releases.

TDR event from the Nvidia driver. ie. Application crash leading to user space driver reset. This manifests as WoW’s 3D elements going black, UI textures being unloaded, thus being rendered as bright green, shortly followed by a video driver reload while WoW.exe is still running. The Wow client had been running fine for about 4hrs prior to this.

This specific crash only started for me with this patch. I’ve not had a WoW crash for a very long time.

Crashes observed:

1 - Idle in Dornogal, using transmog mount. (Yesterday)
2 - After killing Galywix in the raid. At loot window pop up before the cinematic is triggered. (Today)

Suggests it’s perhaps an issue with loading UI texture elements?

Firefox was the only other app running simultaneously in both cases. (Single monitor system.) I’ve disabled Advanced Work Submit and will see what happens.

My login selection screen is full of black or rainbow characters models :rabbit2:

Not quite the same issue but possibly related for sure.

If it’s failing to render on the log in screen maybe the shader version is unsupported or the shader cache is broken. Perhaps even the texture format is unsupported.

I’ve been as thorough as possible in exploring workarounds and experimenting with different game and software settings but the best solution is only temporary. If it does not get me after first relog, it surely will will by second time.

The longer I play in a single session it just spirals out of control and eventually all my characters will start showing blank textures or artifacts of some kind.

Broken textures on character selection screen weren’t so worrisome at first but now the same thing is happening at random even in the game world. Those textures can begin to blink/flash depending on the viewing angle and if there’s more than one model affected it becomes disorienting or even seizure inducing. It’s not so bad in a static frame but quickly turns into a disaster while the camera is moving.

I’m not sure if the issue is the same for me but it sounds rather similar. In my case it has a tendency to happen when i open the collection, esp the appearances tab, or generally just any UI, including maps. Just now my game crashed with the error of “World of Warcraft could not start up 3D acceleration” after flashing blue and reloading the whole world several times. I’ve only been having it since the new patch too, and I’ve been worried. Somewhat relieved to see its not just a me issue again ><

Lots of posts about this on the US forums too. Safe to say they’ve broken something.

There are posts on Facebook suggesting to change from DirectX 12 to DirectX11 which fixes it for the moment. I can’t confirm this because it isn’t breaking for me as I have a Mac adn I don’t have an Nvidia card. But it’s worth a try.

From what I’ve seen in different topics, everyone is experiencing some kind of graphical problems but the level of severity is entirely dependent on their hardware and software.

Dx11 may help with stability but in no way does it guarantee a workaround for any of the existing issues. More so, for many players with older hardware the performance will be far from ideal in comparison to Dx12. For me personally max average FPS is about 30% lower when nothing interesting is happening on screen.

I’m having the exact issue you described. On a 1660 Super, but I’ve never had any issues like this in TWW before this patch.

I’ve noticed the same issue. Always happens if I try to use my transmog mount within Dornogal. Also noticed it happening when flying to zaralek caverns from Valdrakken if I opened the appearance collection tab.

same problem here, i did hit up US forum an see lots of post about it aswell

this workaround is helping for some, tho it not a fix.

“go to settings and switch the card from auto detect to whatever your card is, and try going back to Direct X 11.”

Disabling Advanced Work Submit does not stop the crashing.

Had another crash after arriving in Dornogal via Hearthstone from an Overcharged Delve. Game uptime was about 4-ish hours, again. I had been using the Titan console talent pane in a delve prior to stoning out.

my card is always selected on the settings, even before this stupid issue. it is still cooking my gpu.

everything is turning to green after a while, if it does not do that, at least it starts monitor flickering. both of my monitors start blinking, goes black and on, rinse and repeat for a couple times.

your engine is collapsing blizz, maintain. we are dealing with stupid technical errors after every major update now, that’s not quality material you know!

probably because RTX 50 series is first chiplet design gpu for NVIDIA and this is rather new, so some games have these types of issues, its probably something NVIDIA has to fix possibly with help of Blizzard because it may need fixes on both the game and the drivers.

The game gets more and more broken with each patch. On my 4070 Ti Super I can’t get over 60% GPU usage in most areas, and lost like 30 fps in Dornogal as a result. Before the patch the GPU usage would be around 85%.

WoW is extremely CPU-limited, keep that in mind.
You won’t get 100% gpu load ever unless you are running 4k in a low pop spot (where your CPU can actually prepare triple digit FPS for your GPU to render) or using supersampling.

Another night, another test. Async Resource Creation has no effect on the crashing. i.e. it crashes whether it’s on or off.

Opening the Collections window triggers the crash quite easily however.

After dastardly duo patch I couldn’t even play with “memory could not be written” errors, some tech mvp will tell you to buy new pc because it’s not a blizzard fault. Recent battle net and wow update, miracle, no errors with the same pc. Now I sometimes have crashes like you, but in Dornogal or after leaving a battleground.

This is happening a lot since 11.1.7 never before.
Easy way to replicate is to go to appearances or use a transmog npc, either the toy or a vendor, which for me crashes the graphics display reliably and consistently.

Not on a NVIDIA gpu but i do wonder if game is playable on directx11 for those having issues, especially graphic glitches or driver timeouts.
