Has Blizzard explained this yet? In WoD, there was one Commander in Shadowmoon. In Legion, in the ToS cinematic, the ‘heroes’ where Ravenholdt, Tyrosus etc. In BFA there was one hero, who had the Heart of Azeroth (?). In Shadowlands there was initially the “Maw Walker”, but then as we moved on there were the “Maw Walkers”.
they tried to copy every other mmo that has a singular hero but failed to understand that you kinda have to make that hero part of the story and consitently your calling the player General one expansion they can’t suddenly go back to being a random nobody despite some part of the playerbase wanting that
FF 14 does this good because everyone don’t get selective memory loss when a new expansion comes around faction leaders actually remember you
Well the thing is, it was never clear what we actually are in the first place; Judging by the quests I thought I was the new Highlord of the Silver Hand, but, judging from the ToS trailer, Tyrosus is. In WoD, I am the General of Lunarfall, but then Grom speaks to Gul’dan as if there is a whole bunch of us. In BFA, there is one hero who is the “Champien” of Azeroth, who gets to carry its so-called Heart, but it is so extremely vague what happened there, because after BFA the player character hardly gets any recognition for that.
Now in Dragonflight, I am not sure anymore if there is one hero, or several supposedly. Sabellian brings the N’zoth thing up, but then there are many adventurers, and in Shadowlands, many Maw Walkers (although the ‘legendary’ Maw Walker was unique at SL launch, only later was it changed from THE Maw Walker to A Maw Walker).
I guess my point is that, it is VERY unclear whether:
The heroes are the NPCs lorewise or not (Ravenholdt etc)
There are many heroes or just one; or whether that is flexible
Whether, aside from Legion, the “Heroes” ever even existed at all or whether it was just Wrathion or Khadgar or w/e.
The starting point in making the players part of the story is clarifying what the players ARE, and that is extremely vague.
Or failed to understand that the WoW player experience has always been being ‘one of many’ and suddenly being treated as the singular hero when everyone else you know in game is also being treated as the singular hero as well is kind of weird.
I noticed the change from singular maw walker to plural maw walkers and appreciated it. I appreciate even more being treated as a simple adventurer in DF.
