The reason Why WoW beat Everquest wasn’t because WoW was different from Everquest, but because WoW is Everquest but Better.
Everquest also helped, by betraying its core audience, then launching EQ2 attempting to be WoW, which with a dodgey Combat system, No balancing, Raids were no trash 1 boss fights which werent immensely well done either
no PvP options outside of weird pet battles
everquest 2 felt so rushed in so many ways to try and combat WoWs booming success it basically suicided in terms of its own audience.
Both games has good and bad things.
I still play Eq1 and enjoys it emmensly. it’s a total different paste to things than wow snd i truly enjoy playing Everquest.
There are even things which i wish were implemented in wow. .
Everquest 1 was my first mmorpg love back when it launched. It will always have a charm to me.
I enjoy playing both…and other mmorpgs

All in due time.
Wow got its success because ut was easier, faster and more available to a wider customer range. While EQ, EQII and other games like SWG had a steep learning curve and demanded a lot of time invested, Wow was, as someone mentioned earlier, a lot more casual.
The old hardcore MMORPG players disliked it, called it a dumbed down version of the genre but while the old games thought 600.000 subscribers a success, wow reached far beyond that with up to 14 million subscribers and changed the definition of what a MMO should be.
A lot of other companies tried to copy the formula like SWG/NGE, Rift and Warhammer, but wow had by then allready grown to be the biggest and most played game in the genre and was hard to compete with.
