The retirement of Artifact weapons = Plot hole?

Hi, recently cameback and have played a bit now and also went ahead and started leveling some level 110 alts, and i can’t help to wonder why suddenly the powerful weapons of legends just get swooped under a rug just like that.

Don’t get me wrong i’m glad to be able to use and get new weapons but considering all the build up for when you did the quest line for your artifact weapon and suddenly all that talk about how powerful and essential it was just end get ignored.

From stuff of legend to “ok cool story bro” is just odd imo. But i might’ve missed something? If i didn’t they could have at least made us leave/turn in our artifact weapons to respective class hall in exchange for a substitute weapon before we set out on our new adventures in BFA.

It’s bugging me since these artifact weapons aren’t anything like raid gear from previous expansion but rather lore/story related and how the transition to BFA gives no reason for those weapons not to be used(storywise at least, not really speaking about item level, just to be clear).

EDIT: Since some seem to misunderstand me i’ll try to make it as clear as possible reagrding my reasoning:

Not being stuck with one weapon(artifact weapon) was a GOOD change.

It has nothing to do with leveling with a weapon from 110-120, I do not miss them.

They could have made a solid story motivated reason to why we don’t use the artifact weapons( Like my suggestion of having to leave them for safe keeping in the class hall.

Because the specs were already changed that you keeped the most good stuff from your artifact weapon and don’t need it anymore. If you want a weapon for 110-120 you can buy heirlooms.

There are quite a few specs which I could debate that on.
Yet overall, the majority of the specs have been bake-in without issue.

Funny. I remember when people complained about being stuck with pre-set weapons, unlike every other expansion before, and how some didn’t like X or Y Weapon representing A or B class/spec.

Typical case of inability to please everyone. It’s much easier to make some unimportant neck-piece rather than Weapons, which is one of (if not THE) slot most players would consider the most in almost every way.

Just be happy that the potential for relic-quests may still be a filler-avenue down the road, given the Shadow Priest Weapon still had a rather important sub-plot despite also being drained.

Not sure if it’s still available somewhere or not, but the reason that the legendary weapons disappeared from the story is because there was(is?) a quest that appeared before BFA launched in which you had to travel to the wound and use a ritual that drained the magical powers out of the artefact weapons in order to drain the magical power from Sargaras’ sword, making them significantly less powerful, and presumably less powerful than any other weapon you obtain from that point forwards.

It’s kind of a hand-wavey way of depowering the items, but they at least did address it.

Now, whether we can assume that even random greens/blues that drop at level 110 are already magically enchanted, and so inherently better than a non-magical version of any of the melee weapons isn’t really canonically specified, but draining the magic out of the caster weapons at least did make them deadweights, at the very least.

Actually the ritual made the weapons unstable. At first they were gaining power. More and more. And the artifact weapon window was all shaking and stuff. After a few weeks they started to loose power.

Finally some solid explaination!
Wish they actually made that part of the quests that are required before you get
to kul’tiras/Zuldazar for returning players just so it could make som sense. for me it was pretty much return to the game and your weapon is out of fuel, get new weapon and forget the artifact existed.

Actually yeah, That’s right. I stand corrected.
