The Sethrak in the War Within

The Sethrak are a well requested and beloved race since their debut in Battle for Azeroth, there is a massive support for their reappearance (and playability) in the World Soul Saga / War Within. Given this is Year of the Snake, this would be an excellent time to bring them back into the fold.

It is worth mentioning that we have seen at least a large margin of every underground race included in this expansion (Niffen, Drogbar, Nerubians, Goblins, Earthen), alongside every native of Zandalar: Zandalari (NPC wise), Vulpera and Tortollan - Yet the one race that has yet to make a proper appearance at all are the Sethrak.

Kasthrik is the only Sethrak we’ve seen in the expansion (so far), and can be found in the Fungal Folly delve (during the Explorers’ League challenge), alongside her, there is the new tidbits added from the Exploring Azeroth book: Isles and Islands that confirms that while there is a persistence of mourning and exhaustion among the Sethrak still long after their war with the Faithless, they Devoted have reclaimed complete control of the Temple with Sethraliss’ return, and have begun mending relations with the Vulpera.

They owe the Horde a great debt for liberating them out of the tyranny of the Faithless Empire + Bringing back Sethraliss, who long ago, sacrificed herself to save Azeroth from the shadows. There’s also in-game commentary (as well as dungeon skyboxes in the Temple of Sethraliss) that pretty much solidifies them as an underground dwelling race. Their society is vast and one can only imagine how long it stretches on for beneath the surface of Azeroth.

With the War Within focusing on both underground themes+dealing with the Void, this would be an excellent time to bring the Sethrak back into the fold, and if not, there is always an opportunity for them to show up during Midnight to help repel the Void. They are an incredibly ancient race, and surely have a score to settle with the very shadows itself.

And just as a “what if?” scenario, based on a theory, so no solid proof, only some breadcrumbs - another anchor point for bringing them back would be the unresolved yet plot of Titan Keeper Tyr after his rebirth, from the Dragonflight expansion and the mysterious Refti, working in his service, who share HUGE similarities with the Sethrak. They look as if related, in a way the Earthen and Dwarves are. As we still have unfinished business with Tyr, we could get some more information of their origin, if and how they relate to the Sethrak. If they are somehow related, it’d be nice to see some relationships between the two (like the Earthen and Dwarves) and know more on how they came to be. Although this seems like a Last Titan kind of deal.

TLDR - We love the Sethrak and we’d love to see them more!

Thanks for reading!
Huge shoutout to Vatthiss-WrA US for putting this together and letting me share, as well for his unstoppable love for the Sneks!

I don’t think we’ll see sethrak (playable atleast) strictly under the premise that blizzard will get more backlash for publishing a dracthyr 2.0, the lack of mog on dracthyr is already a outcry and theres probably no story plot in the current expansion to back them re-involving sethrak, in the current without back tracking to BFA

If we were to get another scaled race I’d rather it be Naga, in all honesty. They’ve been a major part of the setting since before World of Warcraft launched and are tied to many of the more interesting aspects of the story.

Sethrak by comparison are largely limited to a specific zone’s story with very little presence outside of that.

There is a huge difference between Sethrak and Dracthyr. A lot of players find Sethrak cool, i would even say most people wanted them instead of the Vulpera. Dracthyr on the other side got hate even before people complained about the transmog issue.

But yeah, storywise it would be weird to bring them back now.

Its a cool race and cusps on the realm of being a more beastial/fantasy oriented race definitley one which is less touched on, its what dracthyr are (for the most part) if you can look past the rubbish visage.

As someone who is wedged between the list of folk who wanted both, I can very much see what you say but I fear that it will do more damage than good, as blizzard are very sloppy with making anything “playable” actually feel like a player character unless the character model is basically already finished and is just a matter of porting it into the game under a new name.

The fact worgen got a rework in BFA yet basic options for customisation is still unavailable to them and then we have dracthyr who can’t even wear mog. I feel we would just get dracthyr 2.0, minus the visage.

and at that point you’d have to ask yourself is it worth the development time when the devs/artists /whoever is responsible wont even fix what they already have.

If we include how Blizzard works you are right yes.

That’s the best part, though.

I would have liked the draconic form to be more along the lines of the larger, more muscular guards hanging around Valdrakken. Since we didn’t get that, I just play my Dracthyr in his ‘Elf’ form 100% of the time.

Subjective to opinion, when I was told new race. I thought it was a new race, not just a cheap excuse to string an elf form to it.

Its the same gripe I have with worgen, I wouldn’t even have them if I could opt out of it. Thats not what I play dracthyr or worgen for, sure its a part of their lore. But I can tell you one thing, I spent 20 minutes designing my dracthyr / worgen. Not the human / elf form, If I could have nothing to do with them. I would.

De ja vu x) you’re not alone in it to say the least.

I think with the worgen it’s interesting to have the human form since they are not wolf man but actually cursed werewolfs.
And it’s ofcourse a nice RP feature.

I think the dracthyr just got it cause it was clear from the beginnig many people will not be happy even more since they don’t have tmog.
I personally would like perma visage since I don’t like the dracthyr but the evoker class but I get why some don’t like that idea

thats the only saving grace for it yeah, bar that. I hate that its not an optional thing I can’t get rid of since most instanced content forces you into it and theres plenty of bugs too.

i mean yeah it has no mog cause the devs dont want to make a conscious effort of rigging armor onto a new race which they have got no assets for etc already and would have to make from scratch if I had to guess. meanwhile every set which goes onto a tauren, worgen or vulpera is mostly a disaster and yet we still get it no matter how broke on launch it is. We went a full expansion with worgen missing a helmet model for a current raid tier appearance, so I don’t see what the excuse is.

I have to say if dracthyr had mog and an hide wings option (cause backpacks)
The I could actually see myself playing one.

Ofcourse some more feral aggressive features would be cool too but I enjoyed making one and choose all the fin options so he looks les dragon and more lizard man
