How big is the Barrens supposed to be in the story? I was always under the impression that it’s a gigantic place that takes days to get across, however I’m currently reading The Shattering and a group of taurens leave Orgrimmar early in the morning and arrive in Mulgore by afternoon. And they’re apparently moving on foot.
I don’t know, I just always figured Barrens is a bit bigger than a ~10-hour hike. Has there ever been actual official information about the in-universe size of the zone?
Blizzard is not, and never was, consistent in regard to zone sizes, I’m sorry to say. There is no scale that is “right”. What I can say is that the trend seems to go towards a smaller world, rather than a bigger one. Especially Christie Golden, who has moved from just writing novels for Blizzard to joining their story team permanently seems to favour keeping things in about the same scale as you see in the game, making everything really, really small.
On the other hand, Blizzard still hires writers who make the journey through one zone into two weeks adventure, so who knows, could change any moment…

And yea, I have noticed the trend. Didn’t know she’s part of the team now. I hope the novels are better than the writing in WoW lately… so far, so good, though.
