High Speaker Eirich, you say? Well, this name is not random at all.
“Ei” is proto-norse for “Eternal”, and “Reiks” (which the second part of his name is most likely a spin on) is gothic for “prince”, “lord”, or whatever.
Due to me picking up and buying a book (or a comic) from time to time when I’m out shopping and bored out of my mind, I know that this exact same combination appears in the comic Batman: Endgame. At some point in the (ridiculous but entertaining) story, the Joker pretends to be a doctor at Arkham under the alias “Eric Border”.
When he reveals himself he explains how he came up with “Eric” and how “Border” is a homophone for “bourder”, an as he says “obsolete word for jester”.
Why is this interesting and/or important?
It shows that Blizzard reads that kind of stuff and their choice to read “Endgame” might be an indication of their desire to deliver an “Endgame” for WoW’s story with the Worldsoul Saga.
“The first element, ei- may be derived from the older Proto-Norse *aina(z), meaning “one, alone, unique”, as in the form Æ∆inrikr explicitly, but it could also be from *aiwa(z) “everlasting, eternity”, as in the Gothic form Euric.”
I would say that if we’re going all Proto-Norse here that his name means “Unique and Everlasting” which would match the lore information of these Earthen lasting for many centuries. A quest suggests at least 5,000 years… a bit of text flavour suggests maybe as long as 10,000. As the Curse of Flesh happened 15,000 years ago (according to the timeline on Warcraft Wiki) it may well be these Earthen were around back then.
Here’s my suggestion about High Speaker Eirich, in context of the above “Erik” explanation… He might well be the FIRST EVER Earthen to exist. To later Earthen he’d be perceived as being unique and everlasting, and one of a kind as the first one.
