Things That You Think Are Really Important For Quality RP, That Most People Get Wrong

Fun. People all have their flavours, but fun is the most important quality. People need to be having fun!

Things that are important:

  1. Sticking true to your character.
  2. Accepting consequences for your actions.
  3. Playing fair.

Things people think are important but aren’t:

  1. Advanced grasp of English.
  2. Extremely long emotes.
  3. Big TRP profiles.

Bro, I’d rather RP with someone who types like Borat but offers intriguing & nuanced roleplay with a lot of development than some norf-core RPer using thesaurus English w/o it leading anywhere.

I know this is mostly a thing only I find annoying and that there are examples ingame of people doing just this. But I hate it when people talk too “modern” in RP. I always hated it when a 200 year old elf talks like a teenager or an orc warrior talks like they just hit puberty.

He’s an actual Ren’dorei.

The in-game clocktower in Stormwind tolls in relation to the time of the server. It is an in-game and dare I say in-character measure of the actual time which correlates with the irl time of the server. Do we all ignore the actual in-game clock that tells us the time? This seems like such a leap. I have an idea. Make up a reason why your character is busy in the morning/afternoon and enjoy your evenings!

Thank you, finally someone said it.

I feel with you on that one, there’s so many demon role-players in Stormwind now that are apparently Illidari. And it makes me wonder, why people diden’t think of why would the Illidari even send its demons to Stormwind? It kind of contradicts their purpose. (I guess it’s a given they are usually sayaad/shivaara.)

And let’s not get me started on the “sin’dorei” characters in Stormwind as well, oh and the Void Elf pirate characters and Argent Crusade members. ;-;

Then there’s naturally the fact the majority of characters is some kind of “elf” no they don’t put which race but just “elf” in the TRP3. And basically act akin to teenage human’s with long ears and very long life spans. Because humans are so bland and boring compared to this, high quality elf roleplay.

Ren’dorei are delegated to being thotty bar maids rather than doing anything related to the void.

Same with Demon Hunters who would rather lay with the demons then slay them. (Futas? Yes.)

I very much understand where you’re coming from, for me personally though this vastly depends. Do long emotes automatically make for higher quality roleplay? Absolutely not. Are 2-3 long emotes automatically purple prose? Not in my eyes, if they’re not overly extravagant or flowery for the sake of it.

I prefer shorter emotes when there’s multiple people around, but lately I’ve found I actually enjoy slightly longer form of roleplay more when it comes to one on one roleplay if the other player’s approach to writing feels interesting. Simply because I enjoy writing in general.

I’ve sometimes seen people make scornful jabs at people who enjoy longer form of roleplay to a point I think it’s needlessly mean and demeaning. I doubt most of these people do it for the sake of trying to come across as higher quality roleplayers, but simply enjoy adding more detail for immersion. But that said, I do think people should try adjust to their ongoing surroundings; if the other players seem to prefer shorter form, it’s better to accommodate them because snipping those extra details costs nothing.

I don’t disagree, and I do apologise if I came across a little blunt or mean spirited! One on one roleplay will also change the pace of things, as opposed to a group or multi-guild setting for instance.

There most certainly are places where long descriptions are entirely apt, and I didn’t mean to imply that was never true if I did; whether it’s the DM setting the scene or someone pulling a particularly impressive feat out for something/to save the day/after a great roll, then there’s certainly nothing wrong with that!

In my opinion, good writing, good music, good filmography - really just good art in general - shows that just because you can do something, doesn’t mean that you should. While there’s a time and a place to go guns blazing and extravegant, there’s also times for subtelty and nuance.

The occasional use of simile and metaphor is all well and good, but when the entire sentence is metaphor, it can be difficult to see the meaning behind all the decorative language. I’ve not seen it too often but when I have, it’s honestly made me want to dip out of the RP.

Venturing out into the world. If all your character does is stay in the one city/location all day everyday it eventually becomes stagnant and risks becoming second life rp

Language. More precisely the way certain swear words that have already been mentioned in this post is used.
Like, come on! You’re in a fantasy universe, surely there are way more creative insults and swears than the word “f * ck” and “c * nt”. For me personally, it ruins the atmosphere.

Tyrande didn’t take the Kaldorei there. She brought the army of the night warrior. The refugees of teldrassil, the few ones that made it out, are in Stormwind as far as everyone knows.

I know there is an in-game cinematic with them, where she just says “I will bring the Kaldoreis to Nordrassil”, not specifically Night Warriors. But I could be looking too much into it. I don’t see why she would leave her other refugees in Stormwind however within the hands of a leader she doesn’t trust.

there are even more entertaining real world insults

like how do you react if a Gnome hunter calls you a drongo?

In the book there is a night elf girl present playing the lute by Malfurion and Tyrande’s camp. So it’s safe to assume it’s not just the Black Moon army hanging there. We don’t get much of a description generally, but I think it’s a bit odd to simply rule out there are no refugees that went to Hyjal and they just sit around on the streets of Stormwind instead because it’s just that great.

On the other side of the lake another hill rose, this one crowned with three silver tents, the poles intricately carved with leaves and painted moons. Thick blankets and furs were spread before the tents, along with a low cushioned bench, the arms carved into owls. Seated beneath the bench, a night elf girl plucked dolefully at the lute.

Never said there were no refugees in Hyjal. Arguably, I believe there may be refugees all over Kalimdor, including Feralas or Stonetalon, even if there is nothing in game telling us that is the case.
In the book there is that only reference that even in itself does not state refugees left stormwind, my comment before merely clarified that nothing has told us so far that refugees left the capital and as such people rping as refugees in stormwind is 100% plausible.
