It won’t be if it’s done well. I have used World of Warcraft ( admittedly not on Retail ) to play DnD before and having a 3D environment you built, with NPCs designed for your story is amazing. It provides far better immersion.
A friend of mine started a guild up. I liked the concept, I liked the people in there OOC, I wanted to give it a try.
I then get sent a .pdf file with information regarding the guild’s combat system, racial traits, stat assignments, all of that stuff which TTRPG players are accustomed to. I couldn’t even bring myself to read it, I just noped out.
One thing that really puts me off of guilds, is the overly complicated DnD stat system and combat rolls plus buffs, items and god knows what else. As soon as a guild sends me a .pdf of a roll system like that or even mentions stats, I nope out of there, just puts me right off. Far too complex for RP for me personally.
By chance, were you using voice chat or some other means of getting the information out quicker, both from player and DM side? And did you have Gamemaster rights on that server?
Because I´ve played on private RP servers and I agree, the experience is amazing, but in Retail, where many people focus on the “gameplay” of RP rather than how it looks (for example using complex system and NPC represented by marker rather than a player), I´ve always found DnD style RP quite boring.
Not using brackets to convey OOC messages, there’s plenty of ways to let someone know information that doesn’t involve typing it in the chat box used for roleplay.
It really takes me out of the moment when I’m RPing and someone goes (Brb for a moment xP) in the middle of dialogue, it’s better to either whisper the person or excuse yourself IC for a moment, it makes the world seem more removed from reality, which helps me immerse better.
the thing here., is we’re roleplaying people. and people, frankly, aren’t that creative with insults in most cases. My character’s a bit of a potty mouth at times, because when something goes wrong she’ll let slip a curse, but she’s not going to come up with elaborate curses when “piece of $%!~” will work.
This
I have no problems with some kind of tabletop system, but if you can’t explain it in a few /rw at the start of an event, it’s overcomplicated.
On the other hand, i like a little randomness in my outcomes, i enjoy a simplified roll system. few/no stats (i did attend an event where the only stat was armour classes recently, and quite liked that.)
Swearing. Especially overusing it.
I dunno chief, that’s pretty sus.
Yeah… this is really cringeworthy, especially edgy or hard chars that do it.
Yeah it sucks a lot of the mood out when the cartoon elf starts swearing like its a gritty crime drama.
It is so much worse when people try to swear just to seem cool… It’s why I avoid Stormwind a lot nowdays.
Its like… It’s not cool, stop it, stop being cringe.
I’ve mostly found Stormwind pretty chill in the last few days. That said I’ve not RPed much recently because most of my wow is dedicated to the ongoing gnomequest to get a gnome of every class to 50.
A worthy quest, which ones do you have left ?
Monk is 47 and then its just DK, Warrior and Hunter.
Mion’s guide on troll footwear.
And keep IC and OOC apart, thats really important.
being posted immediately after my post, i feel like these comments are aimed at me…
And given you’re responding to me mentioning my character is a bit of a potty mouth, yet have never actually role-played with me, i’d like to point out that my point was that some characters speak like people, and hate to break it to you, but people swear.
Swearing like a sailor is bad, unless you actually are a sailor. And swearing just to be edgy is bad. But swearing to express frustration is just what people do.
Oh no I refer to all non-gnome RP characters as imaginary cartoon elfs.
Not at all, just wanted to post on this thread. It wasn’t pointed at any individual.
I just find swearing, especially the words which aren’t used in WoW or among NPCs quite immersion breaking, like Fs, Cs and all that. Some people literally spam them and I feel burned out by that, and makes me think if they are literally unable to talk without using those words.
Slight edit: Also some modern slangs which may be related at times too.
Thralls Balls!
I feel a lot of people don’t grasp shorter timeframes of Azeroth. Teldrassil existed for maybe about 10-12 years before being burnt down. The draenei have been on Azeroth less than that. The human wastewanders of Tanaris came on ships during the third war, also around 10 years in the past.
“Birthplace: Darnassus” does not work unless you are an elven toddler.
the 12 year old city has ancient looking ruins so i can imagine they think its around much longer, however the world tree seemingly didn’t house a city… so there could be a chance that the tree lifted the city up forming this tree- city fortress.
A fundamental RP asset
