Hi, so I know this is a very rough estimation, but check your Auction House.
Alliance has in total 25500 items listed in AH.

I’ve checked Shazzrah-EU for fun (the super heavy populated server) it has 35000 items on Horde side.

Horde AH was on just over 23,100 items earlier (2hrs ago).

Seems the Alliance 55 - 45 Horde figure was pretty accurate after all.

The best way to find out is enough people on both sides to install CensusPlusClassic addon and periodically upload the data they collected to wowpop.appspot.com
