I do not think that link is appropriate for posting there. Maaaaybe if you cut out the other guy’s name and all the swear words.

First things first, just as the posters above me have already stated, your screenshot goes directly against the Forum Rules and this might actually get you punished. I am sorry that you had to go through this, but your reaction is hardly appropriate.

Secondly, before comparing yourself with Reckful, you should know that Reckful lived enough to see his older brother commit suicide and has struggled his whole life fighting against Manic Depression/Bipolar Disorder and whatever his own mother was actually suffering from. From the very start, he was exposed to an affliction which he had to live with, and then he also had to experience the suffering that both his older brother and his mother were going through.

Thirdly, do not be so arrogant as to assume you know with certainty why Reckful chose to do what he did. You can never be inside an other person’s head. What the media show is but the surface.

Lastly, people do not tend to ponder suicide because they get flamed online unless they are already suffering from mental health issues. I agree that you can never truly know what the other person’s history is when you only meet them behind a screen, and that this whole “e-flaming” tendency needs to stop (or at least be massively reduced) but throwing accusations like these only adds fuel to the fire from your part.

If that person made you feel bad, report them for language and put them on ignore. If you feel like this did not do much, try opening a ticket? The way you chose to handle this is not correct.

Literally no one commits suicide out of what they’re being told online, unless they are already afflicted by mental health issues.

Sadly so. But he is not the only one, and make no mistake - there are people who are going through stuff which is way worse than what Reckful experienced.

haha you zoomers are so funny
theres this thing called “mute”, it makes the person in question shut the hell up. learn to use it, its useful!

why do kids these days think the world should adapt to them instead of the other way around?

exactly this ^^^

The above takes the prize as the most morally reprehensible I have ever read on these forums.

Just…wow.

Edited to be less offensive. My apologies.

says the guy while calling someone braindead, do you even have the slightest self awareness?

Go make some coffee

Let’s see…

One puts forth the notion that if someone is suicidal because of online bullying, harassment, defamation, or otherwise, then it’s on themselves and they should just grow up.

That is a despicable line of thinking, and I am being generous by criticizing it in strong terms.

Other guy then follows it up with the bold claim that no one commits suicide because of online bullying, harassment, defamation, hate culture, etc… And that the only reason someone might, is because they’re already mentally ill.

Never on this forum have I read such vile, such zealous defense of offensive online behavior or its effects on others.

Edited to be less offensive. My apologies.

Cyberbullying is a form of aggression by using the internet and/or electronic communication, such as mobile phones, e-mail, and text message, to cause humiliation, terrorization, embarrassment, and/or psychological distress to a peer.[15] In comparison to verbal bullying, a research study showed that adolescents who reported cyberbullying were 11.5 more likely to have suicidal ideation, while those who have reported verbal bullying were only 8.4 times more Iikely.[16] In another study, 75% of adolescents who experienced cyberbullying presented with higher suicidal ideation than those who have experienced verbal bullying.

so you bully people that don’t agree with you, while saying how bad it is to bully people online, got it.

and since you THINK you have the moral high ground, you think its ok to just bully people that don’t agree with you. i see.
irony or just plain retardation? can’t tell…

feel free to not @ me because im out this stupid thread, like i said in my first comment just use “mute” and thats what im doing, have a nice life.

I believe I criticized what they had written, in very strong terms. There is a difference.

But I’ll edit the terminology out and extend my apologies if it comes off as a form of bullying. That was not the intent.

The strong criticism of the line of thinking expressed, that stays.

Wait Jito, you are running to conclusions. Or perhaps it was me who worded it wrongly?

The thing is, this data you are presenting here is “raw” in the sense that there is no way for you - the reader - to know the background of those people. Never did I once claim they need to be “mentally ill”. Sometimes, such disorders arise from a genetic pre-disposition alone. It’s a horrible thing, but it happens.

One article I read long ago claimed that, if a person is “mentally healthy”/does not have any sort of issue regarding mental health, online harassment would be very unlikely to cause them to commit suicide, or draw that line in general. When I talked about it to a psychiatrist friend of mine, they seemed to agree with this notion, based off on what they had studied so far.

Also, no offense Jito, I have always known you to be a “dim light” (gently put), but how are your replies any different to what you are criticizing me for? Flaming is still flaming, even when you try to hide it under non-verbally abusive language, silly kid. If anything, I did try to shed some light in this regard. What did you do?

P.S. For all that it is worth, no, I did not “defend” online bullying or harassment. Stop being a little social justice warrior and start reading more carefully.

So to summarize, hollowinside is implying a mental disorder occurs before the thought of suicide, so therefore online harassment causes the disorder first (clinical depression for example) while the disorder is the direct cause of the suicide, which becomes worse by further exposure to online harassment.

While Jito is claiming a mental disorder isn’t the cause of suicide when online harassment is to blame. Pretty much.

This is a weird argument, full of PC landmines. Humans are aggressive by nature. It’s our intellectually conscious self that keeps our instincts in check, and socially accepted behavior is subjective and can be very different between different cliques of people.
The prevalence of “toxic” behavior can be blamed on the social design of the MMO instead. While it doesn’t excuse the individual, the prevalence of it can be reduced with more focus on the social design and how people are made to interact in the game.

I disagree. I believe the prevalence of said behavior could not possibly stem from anywhere else other than our very human nature. Or do you seriously mean to tell me that people weren’t being toxic during their time spent online before MMO games became a thing, or a trend?

I disagree with this statement once again. I honestly believe that if one was to tackle the issue long-term, then they should start by the educational system. Raising awareness regarding it, and informing of how to deal with it would probably prevent most of it. Not extinguish, but at the very least limit its effect on every single online “platform”.

I’ll link a few more studies for thoughtful reading:

Young victims of cyberbullying twice as likely to attempt suicide and self-harm, study finds

Well, I’ll extend an apology if my choice of language was found offensive.
I’ve edited where necessary to avoid a confusion of intent.

And let me clarify that intent.

Assume the following:
A person writes a dumb statement.
I will call that statement dumb.
That does not translate to me saying that the person is dumb.
There’s a difference between addressing the written word and the writer of the word.

If my choice of words came across in a manner where they eluded to an offensive attack on you as a person (or the other poster), then that was not the intent.
The intent however was to present an offensive attack on what you had written. And I will not apologize for that.

I’ll try, for the future, to reflect more on my choice of words.

But to be clear; I am not criticizing you for your choice of words, but for the message you convey.
As a person, I’m sure you’re a nice guy. I have no reason to believe otherwise.

You placed the blame of someone who’d commit suicide with themselves, assigning the fault to pre-existing mental health issues, rather than the online bullying they may be victims of.

I find that shameful, to say the least.

I may be the scum of this forum, the worst so-called troll ever to lurk here, and a complete retard.

But I will be all of that and more before I will ever stand behind what you said.
