Three RP questions from a noob

Hello!

I’m a returning player to Wow and I’ve become really interested in RP. I’ve rolled Alliance here and I’ve a few questions:

  1. How does one talk about a dead character when we can all resurrect?
  2. Is it possible to play a death knight as a sort of necromancer; someone who hasn’t died themselves? Would this still be within the world? I was thinking of using a void elf to get around the blue, glowing eyes.
  3. Who exactly are the non-blue void elves anyway? Are they still void elves or are they something else?

Thanks for the help!

Resurrection isn’t necessarily as easy canonically as it is in game mechanics.

Those eyes are kind of on fire nowadays, making them very specific to death knights. It’s possible, though, and not all too uncommon.

They’re blizzard catering to a small decade of people screaming about high elves in the funniest way possible.

Most people I see RP them as regular ol’ high elves.

Resurrection in RP has been muddled for a while, but the new starting zone provides a very clear definition for it.

Exile’s Reach introduces an IC use of resurrection as a spell. It “brings someone back from the brink of death”. Of all the actually “resurrected” characters in lore, I believe all have special explanations - I advise using resurrections IC as a “grand-ultra-heal” to save someone who had almost wholly passed away. A grievously wounded soldier, a washed-ashore ally that almost drowned / barely clings to life, etc.

Absolutely. I believe the Grim Gest actually has one or two characters like that!

They are High Elves; here’s a link friend.

Resurrection is still extremely difficult in lore. As Tehya said game mechanics =/= lore.

It’s certainly possible but you will likely still not be welcome in most major hubs. Necromancers still carry an aura that is hard to hide and full on necromancy is not appreciated by either the Horde or the Alliance.

You cannot get rid of the DK eyes, even on a Void Elf. DK eyes override any race specific eyeglow.

Either they’re RPed as fair skinned Void Elves or High Elves. These days its perfectly plausible to use Void Elves for either High Elf RP or Void Elf RP. A character’s TRP profile will often point to what they are.

Nelf black eyes are dominant over DK eyes actually

Are they still? I thought that was changed with the updated customisation.

My nelf DK at present has the black eyes!

Oh nice! Good to hear, thank you!

The questions have already been answered so just welcome back! (Though you can play a dark skinned velf too, obviously, not an obligation for fair.)

Hey. All your questions probably have already been answered. But since you consider yourself a noob to RP I’ll just give you some advice you might not know already.

  1. Avoid Goldshire, don’t go there. Don’t ever acknowledge the place. It has a bad reputation among people who want to Roleplay respectively.
    Stormwind has good RP.
  2. Know the difference between IC and OOC. Know RP terms like Powerplaying and metagaming.
  3. Download the addon: Total RP 3. Its a good tool to use in RP, and almost everyone has one. They’ll recognise you are a fellow roleplayer.
  4. Be respectful to other Roleplayers, even if they Roleplay a mean character, if they push it too far for you whisper them to stop. You might come across toxic roleplayers, and it’s alright to block someone if they make you feel bad.
  5. Read about the Lore of Azeroth, your faction, and your race. If you didn’t play wow for a long time like I did, it’s alright to make a character that has suffered memory loss so you can slowly catch on the lore.
  6. You are the protagonist in your story, true. But you are always a side-character to other Roleplayers experience. Know how to fill that role. It makes others want to roleplay with you. (respecting other RPers)
  7. Use correct grammar and spelling. Of course you can make mistake, especially if English is not your native language, but in the end someone has to still read it.
  8. Write an open background story for your character. You might want to start simple and grow your story from there, don’t give your character too much background at the start. Try to avoid writing a tooedgy background, people already heard of it, and they are mostly tired of it.

Some extra advice: You might not want to start with a Death Knight. Even though they are a cool class, their lore puts some real restrictions on their playstyle. (same with Demon Hunters). Consider roleplaying a warrior/hunter/rogue and roleplay a mercenary/thief/traveler. It’s easier to get into casual RP with those new characters, and grow into the community/

Oh. and another free advice: Avoid sensitive topics.
The World of Azeroth is a violent place, yes. And your character probably witnessed, suffered, or even partake in something violent they regret or are ashamed of.
That said; there are some Roleplayers that make things way too dark, things that might not fit into the otherwise colourful world of Azeroth. I rather not address these kinds of subjects, but I’m sick of people who think it’s okay to roleplay this way.
Don’t ever roleplay anything about sexual violence, sexism, or skin-based racism. It has no place in the world of Azeroth. Your character might hate orcs for burning his home, or dislike Gnomes because he had a bad experience with them in the past. That’s fine. But don’t ever use RP that might be too sensitive for other Roleplayers.

Incredibly helpful! Thank you, all!

Interesting stuff on resurrection. I just wanted a spouse in his past and since they don’t exist in game death seemed like the easiest explanation for that. Don’t worry - it’s purely mechanical; I’m not an edgy recluse and I may never even mention it. Sensitive topics aren’t my bag.

And the death knight/necromancer was just a thought for a future. I am a simple man of the light here.

Alright! Have fun!

Welcome to the server!

I can also recomend you look through the various communities that exists within AD, and consider yourself which one you would be intrested by the most.

As said before, resurrection is difficult to achieve in the lore. You can break it down into three varieties.

Most resurrection spells are simply very powerful healing spells which restore life from the brink of death, not ‘true’ resurrection, which is limited to the hands of extremely talented healers. We see this in Exile’s Reach.

‘True’ resurrection, returning life to a dead body, is much more difficult. A quest from Wrath of the Lich King features a character called Farseer Grimwalker who is able to be resurrected shortly after his spirit is unbound from a shamanic fetish it was held to by the Snobolds. The limitation generally seems to be relating to having recently died, which is (mild headcanon here) probably related to the Kyrians not grabbing you yet.

Imperfect resurrection is the process used to create forsaken and other undead.

Yes. Cult of the Damned necromancers are a good example of this.

Most people play them as High Elves.

This, very much this. Generally speaking the more power a class has lorewise, the harder they are to roleplay in a really convincing manner. On top of that both the mentioned classes have either been put through, or put themselves through some incredible mental, emotional and physical drama that is also a much more challenging thing to convey effectively. A third thing you have to contend with is… Just that there’s been so, so many people that have done the prior two things badly and left a blemish on peoples perception of these classes in roleplay that can make your experience even more challenging. Many of us are tired of watching a person raised from the dead, turned into an unliving weapon, forced to kill their own friends and slaughter thousands of people waltzing around like a normal person and smooching with their partner, or Elves that have made every sacrifice, turned their bodies into weapons and a host for a demon soul to then just be tending a bar in Silvermoon or something.

I’m not saying you should never try these character concepts out, ever. I would however strongly recommend trying something nice and simple, getting to grasps with roleplay and how it all comes together, getting a good understanding of the lore and history before trying some of these concepts.

However! One final point: Don’t give a damn what anyone tells you, have fun. We all pay our sub and we’re all entitled to have fun (Within the rules of the game.)
