Time-limited content

Explain to me the sacred meaning of limited time opportunities in the game today. For example, get the old version of the corrupted Ashbringer or mount for the keymaster in bfa. Is there something other than the feeling “I played not only today, but before Christ”? Why is it better than allowing do it all players at any time? Or let this content gather dust in game files and sometimes appear at players and/or in the preview window?

Never been a fan of prestige items or limited time content.

We need timewalking every week.
Example - this week mage tower
Next week korak
3rd week - time walking anniversary raids

And so all timewalking content all over year which people have missed.

Yeah it’s dumb and stupid and annoying and predatory and frustrating and mindboggling.

I think Blizzard does it because it forces people to play. There’s that fear of missing out mentality that kicks in, like with the 34 slot bag.

Some players like it because there’s prestige and exclusivity tied to the things you get and the stuff you experience, and that does feed the ego.

But yeah, don’t like it personally. What goes into the game should remain in the game. Always.

well blame the special snow flakes they need to feel special in a video game to compensate for their lack of real life achievements

but the whole removing stuff really went into overdrive under ion regardless how it damaged the overall story telling of etc expansion other mmos generally leave in all their stuff you can get stuff in everquest even almost 2 decades later

I like how it’s working in overwatch. Very simple. Halloween? Scary items. Summer? Beach items. Anniversary? Everything. And repeats every year.

It’s been bad for quite some time… Elite pvp sets and gladiator mounts, old naxxramas, classic armors, ateish…

With the worst offenders being the absurd removal of the main story in the MoP/WoD patches. Who in the god damn mind thought that was a good idea.

With classic they should have added something like Hall of Monuments in Guild Wars where doing achievements would unlock unobtainable classic transmog on retail. Especially now the “you should have been there and gotten it then” argument doesn’t hold up any more.

I don’t mind time limited items and I’m saying that as a player who barely touched Legion and BFA.

But it would be nice to add a “time limited event” for the “time limited stuff” just to give players a chance to get their hands on rare items.

It wouldn’t have to be often, but maybe once a year it wouldn’t hurt. It would be a nice middle ground I guess.

So what you are saying is that time limited stuff should be periodic like seasonal.

I didn’t say all of them and not periodically. This year you can add an event, next year another event, different ones.

But then again, I know this topic is a can of worms that when opened people tend to explode.

see this type of mentality i will never understand

if those 2 bag slots are really that important (since 32 slot bags are already in game on AH) then why players dont make peitions to blizzard to make all bags larger

instead that some people go bat sh…t crazy because omg 2 extra slots.

why not make petitions to blizz to make extra 5th and 6th bag slot for bags for proffesion items

why not make petitions to put in more reagent / bag slots into their bank , why not put more slots into void storage

no people would rather rage over 2 slots on limited time event even though most likely in 9.2 or 9.3 34 slot bags will be put in game via tailoring

There has never been a good reason to have limited availability for those items. The Corrupted Ashbringer was available far into The Burning Crusade, which had already trivialized the content at that point, which means that anyone who got the transmog before it was removed (with few exceptions) didn’t “earn” it like the Vanilla Naxxramas players did.

I’ll never understand the reasoning behind this, but then again what do I know? I’m getting old (35+) and can’t really connect with the youth anymore.

Ooo, like if they did a limited time mage tower event for the anniversary or something like that to give players another chance to get the weapon skins? Or MoP challenges modes and things like that?

Yeah, I’d love things like that. I personally don’t feel “more special” because I played at a time when a reward was current, and it’s annoying to see something cool (whether mount or transmog or whatever) and know you can never get it. But other people feel that something is only special if not everyone has it, so I suppose it’s up to Blizz to determine which side gets their way.

You know what’s real funny? Blizzard said “We should have never allowed players to obtain the Ashbringer”.

A few years later? Everyone gets an Ashbringer!

Yeah, I recall that whole debacle prior to Legion. It’s just another sign that Blizzard can’t even stick to their own logic consistently.

I honestly do not understand the point of time-limited rewards anyway.

It does not add any incentive for me to participate in anything, it just excludes new/returning players from fancy stuff.

Having to say “sorry this can’t be obtained anymore.” for a million times to anyone who likes my challenge mode transmog is just horribly frustrating.

Nothing in this game is ever prestigious, as anything can be bought with gold.
Let those who want to flex on complete strangers just post their achievement dates and be done with it.

Exactly what I had in mind.

This could easily have been a max level application of Chromie, which blizzard missed.

Say every month for a week-2 week period, Chromie offers two “timelines” for previous time-limited content for example Pandaria challenge modes, or mage tower. When you queue for one, you are prevented from selecting the other for that month, and it allows you to take part in that event “as if it were current” and scales you down to that event’s level/ilevel a la regular chromie time.

This way you can earn these things but there is some delay in getting them all as you have to pick between two choices and they’re exclusive, so for example with the mage tower/challenge one, i’d need to wait until next cycle to pick the other option.

you had 2 years to do mage tower and mop chalenge modes

if you wanted to do them you would find time .

you can hardly call them time limited events -_-

the timewalking idea here is good

FOMO makes some people panic and return to the game early when it’s almost expansion time. Probably a lot of people.

Look how many players returned to get Long Boi… a £250 value digital item based on current Token price. Dunno about you lot but I didn’t bother getting that monstrosity and I have the gold to do it. Rather turn my gold into tokens so I can grab the collector’s edition of Diablo 4 one day and any other game Blizz puts out.

Some things are used to fill content gaps as well to make it seem like there’s something new to do in the game… many things in fact.

It’s has nothing to do with prestige or achievements from Blizzard’s POV. Money, money, money, player retention.
