Sounds like a fun, yeah.
The takes in this thread areā¦wild.
I personally do not believe AddOns are a bad thing on their own.
The game is fully customizable because of them, and I consider that actually a good point. Because it allows people to tweak every little thing to their needs:
- Dedicated sections for a better, personalized overview.
- Changing things around to deal with disabilities
- Make things more prettier/different/tuned for a specific activity.
That said, when an AddOn becomes āmandatoryā to clear something, then we have a design flaw that needs to be addressed. WeakAuraās is a good example of this (but not the only one), in that way that if I am forced to track something very specific to be able to bypass/beat a mechanic, then something is wrong.
Do I want to ban all addons?
Absolutely not. I am a roleplayer, and if I did not have access to things such as TRP3 and what not, I would be missing out ALOT during roleplay.
Do I want to limitations on AddOns?
Absolutely.
From videos and gossip, we all know there exists addons out there that give people huge advantages over people not using them, or could be outright considered cheating.
Those things need to be absolutely banned, and after a grace-period, anyone using them or attempting to circumvent what the games allowed, be banned,.
I agree with your post but i still think we need to make a nuance about this.
When you go to wagio for installing the weakauras you want, you can see you get an overview of all the specs. This is by far the most used of weakauras. You get a better UI for your spec by installing those spec-WA-packs. And i absolutely do not think this is troublesome.
Iām going to say it ādependsā.
Because I feel this is also a very subjective point in what is considered customization, and what is considered a flawā¦
In general, Iād say that making WAās for tracking your own abilities, cooldowns and what not is ācustomizationā.
But having to create a WA to track something like a boss ability/aura ā design flaw.
I agree, but specificially this is IMO often overblown for the level that most players play atā¦ people just download the northern lights or echo raidpacs and turn their brains off, then complain about needing WAs to track everything.
And then someone like me comes along that doesnĀ“t even use DBM anymore but does have the sound on and a decent view of the boss, and somehow manages to effortlessly deal with mechaniics that they supposedly canĀ“t even seeā¦ So the issue IMO more often than not harkens back to the problem of people trying to build a ladder out of crutches instead of just trying to learn to walk, resulting in them unnecessarily flooding their screen with information thatās already readily available, which in turn leads to them never understanding the actual encounters bbecause theyĀ“re accustomed to paint-by.-numbers gameplay. And yet they still present themselves as if theyĀ“re the next Picasso
I donāt deny this that some people justā¦donāt think.
All addons are freely available to anyone. They are not hidden behind some shady website or a paywall. Its peopleās own volition to use them or not.
Its like coming to a marathon barefoot and complaining that people who āuse sneakers are at a huge advantageāā¦well nobody forced anyone to come barefoot either.
Sorry, thereās enough examples of paywall addons and lessā¦openly accesible addons.
And those are in fact clear violations of the ToSā¦ I still donĀ“t understand why Zygor and Co are still allowed to existā¦ I can only suspect that theyĀ“re not widespread enough to warrant the costs of defending against potential legal action suing Blizzard for loss of income, even though from my perspective the situation is pretty clear cutā¦
But In the USA everybody is constantly suing everyone for everything, we donĀ“t have that issue in Europe, at least not to that extent. And then thereĀ“s the whole misconstrued headline of āBlizzard sues Addon Developers! The end of WoW addons?ā tabloid-level Press that haters would latch on to for the next 10 yearsā¦
Though with the marathon example, I have to laugh and think of ethiopian gold medalist Abebe Bikila, who CARRIED his shoes
As well as the ongoing controversy over NikeĀ“s Vaporfly series, which many still consider cheatingā¦
Abebe is the guy without addons that still performs, and vaporfly users are arguably the equivalentof people using paid addons to āenhance their performanceā
The reason why default UI is terrible is that addons are allowed. Blizzard knows they can outsource to 3rd parties to do their job for free, and players will use them.
As long as addons are allowed, Blizzard has no motivation to improve those aspects. It is very beneficial for Blizzard, but disastrous for the game quality and players.
But unfortunately, there are still players thinking that addons are great. Those players pay money to Blizzard while giving it a free pass for not doing their job.
It is stockholm syndrome and just pathetic.
Everyone want blizzard to improve their UI. Also addon users.
Only problem is that Blizzard tends to make it worse.
Anyone remember that recent UI āupgradeā when the forums where flooded with demands to revert it back.
I dont know what that specific thing is about, but i even have an addon for showing the old microbar (the bar with icons going to your char-sheet, or achievements) with colored icons. The new one had only grey icons.
