Torghast, not that bad, but not as good as it could be

Myself, I find it very fun doing Torghast, both solo and with friends, having 4 lvl 60 toons that I do it with, Arcane mage, Protection paladin, Windwalker monk and Discipline priest, the difficulty of doing it solo differs from class/role to class/role, but also your contribution doing it in a group…

Best things about Torghast, if you ask me is…
The best thing about Torghast is that it is not locked to a full group. You can do it on 1,2,3,4 or five persons, witch is great for casual players and guilds. Oh, we are only 3 friends online this evening, but we can still do Torghast together.
The second best is that it is not timed. You can do it in your own pace, witch is great for players who want to chill and not stress out because of a game, just relax after a hard days work.
The third best is that is is random, or quite random. You cant completely prepare for it, you cant study a youtube link over and over to learn how to do it perfect, heck you cant even do it over and over again to be able to do it flawlessly. The randomness of what floor you get, what powers you achieve and what bosses appear, makes every run different from each other, tactics will have to be adapted and the outcome is always unsure.

Worst things about Torghast, if you ask me is…
The worst thing with it is that it quickly becomes quite unrewarding. If you have gotten the memories you want and don’t need any more Soul ash, there isn’t really any point in doing it besides from having fun.
The second worst thing about it, is that it is mandatory. No content in an MMO should be mandatory on this level. Diversity to peoples playstyle is always preferred.
The third worst thing about it, is that the different instances is time gated. You can only do two of them each week, while I would prefer that all the six instances should be open every week.

Now I have gone through the pro’s and con’s I feel is important regarding Torghast, lets look at the solutions I think would solve a lot of issues.

Rewards.
Torghast should have a slot of its own in the vault. Lets say an 8 equals a Mythic 5 and downgrades from that. I also thing there should be drops from the mobs inside that equals overworld mob drops. Nothing fancy. Just some gold here and there, some resources and such. Also the last boss should drop a chest equal to Mythic with a chance for an item and some valor. (Yes all drops from Torghast should be treated as items from mythic regarding valor upgrades.)
To wage this up, Mythic and Raids should drop Soul ash, also there should be a chance to get a memory that usually drops from Torghast, as memories from dungeons and Raids should have a chance to drop from Torghast.

This way the game would cater to most of the playstyles that its players have. You can play the game how you want and still have a feel of progression.

Mind, that there should still be a reward for doing elite hard content like Mythic 15+ and Mythic raids, but to me the solution is rather simple.
Just have items like armor and weapons that are unique from these types of content. They don’t have to be extremely overpowered, but just a bit better than the tiers below. Like a set bonus that gives a small bonus to the characters abilities.

Just my two cents.

If you add good power-yielding rewards to Thorgast, it will need to be difficult so that it does not replace M+, raids, and PvP as a source of gear. Unfortunately Thorgast’s diffuculty is very random, so this cannot be balanced properly.

Adding cosmetic rewards to Thorghast would be great though.

Also, Thorghast is only fun when you can easily blast through it. When it is difficult (like it was at the start of Shadowlands), it is the most frustrating game mode that ever existed in WoW.

You cant put rewards into torgast becouse it would ivalidate rest of the game.

That is why it has to be balanced. As I said this is not a way to remove the importance of M+ but a way to give Torghast more meaning. I dont see it as competitive but as additive to the game.

Eh? Explain that one???

Takes nearly as long as a dungeon and it scales meaning it gets harder for better rewards

Invalidate in what way?

I would be fine if Thorghast were to drop catch-up gear and allows level 50+ alts to run through it to level up.

But I don’t think it would be good if it tries to match the main 3 gear progression systems. WoW should give the big rewards to multiplayer modes that require the most skill.

I kind of like it for the same reasons, soloable and not timed.
I don’t do it that much for two reasons, it takes so long and offers no reward.

Although is it truly soloable? You can do a few layers of Twisting corridors solo but can you get the mount (just about the only reward from there) solo?
If it scaled properly then a group of 2 and a group of 4 should be able to achieve the same, as should a solo player or a group of five.

It feels like a waste to spend so many resources on designing Torghast when it only relates to a single item upgrade. It needs more rewards.

And what kind of skill do you talk about? The one that you study every encounter and boss in a Mythic+ to finally know where and when do what? That is one kind of skill. The other is doing unpredictable content, learning to adapt and play you class accordingly depending on encounters and powers received. That is another kind of skill. Witch one is greater than the other?..

Yes you can solo it. I soloed up to layer 8 by myself as holy Pala starting 199 ilevel and was 203 by the time I cleared 8. It takes a long time due to each layer length, but perfectly doable if you know how to “do torghast”.

And that is what I ment by skill.

Yeah I agree they’re different forms of skill. I’m not amazing at PvP, I could be better in PvE too, but looking at torg, I was clearing the highest layers solo without much issue at earliest opportunity (including on rogue before the rogue power buffs during week 1) and rogue was my first layer 8 clear first week it could be done.

Clearly there is some element of skill to it, otherwise people wouldn’t recommend grouping to resolve problems. If it were entirely luck based, grouping with others would have no effect. So in the case of those seeking groups, clearly the other group members add something to the group (skill at torg they don’t have themselves)

I’d like a torg exclusive progress path, it’s a game mode and style I like, I play it well and it’s a shame it offers nothing ATM. I’d be happy to get gear from it even if it only worked in torg.

thanks for that. I might try it sometime, although I’m only 190 (unlikely to get much higher until 9.1 when more readily available upgrade come along). I will level some alts when we get flying (one is a pally) so will see which ones are worth trying Torghast on (all might try it just for the fun of the different powers).

A tip, if you are usually playing healer or tank, do not feel need to respec DPS to do torg…DPS get higher scaling mobs and due to powers, their DPS advantage isn’t actually that big.

I mean, I clear much quicker as holy than Ret and my DPS end of run ends up barely lower than my Ret DPS anyway, nowhere near the difference between holy and Ret DPS outside torg.

You know, I am extremely casual. Havent gone beyond Mythic3 completed, havent done any raid at all. Still, i have four characters that are iLVL 204, 203, 202 and 197, all but just do casual content like worldboss every week, getting all the soulbinds up to 200 so I get items that is above 200 for purple dailies and such. Torhast item progression would give so much more to me, and a lot of others.

This has to be a bait post.

In what way. What in my op did you feel it would be such?

I’d be happy with a Torghast specific power progression, a bit like the Ven’ari buffs but earned in Torghast rather than the mawful place.

When I first did it i found it fun from a story point of view, because it was something new, the atmosphere of dread was good, and I liked all the extra powers you get.

After too many times of spending time breezing through 5 floors only to inexplicably meet a totally unkillable boss, and leaving with no rewards, frustrated and fed up - I’m done with it.
