Am I misunderstanding the concept?
There is a theme given each time and we are supposed to wear accordingly but the winner is always a clown costume or a full tier set?

It’s decided on by people*.
*people are weird.
Some people also que up as groups.
This. You’d be surprised how many casuals don’t care if it’s a full set.
If you’re lucky people care and vote accordingly. If you’re unlucky they don’t care and vote for whatever they think is shiniest. If you really want to win the safest bet is unfortunately to go with a party.

Why would anyone care if it’s a set.
People should be judging the category not bringing their snobbery into it

Personally I don’t care but I know that many of those who treat transmog as serious business frown upon using full sets.
I thought this was the only way to play this.
I’ve never tried it as I don’t have an active enough friends list to play it this way.
I wouldnt even mind full set if it reflects the theme given but when pink love skin wins number 1 place in “Black Magic” theme I get confused.
Love is indeed witchcraft, that one makes sense.
I mostly did Trial of Style with friends but I have won them going in alone and even in a full set with a tabard.
It’s fun to see what others do but sometimes people don’t do the themes at all or they bring friends to vote for each other.
The theme is only a suggestion. Some people might ignore it and vote on what they like. Some might be in a group to make sure they all vote for same person.
How does one rate mismatch mayhem?
The most mismatched or mismatched but sill somewhat nice.
I got a row for that once.

Think the others took umbrage at the person moaning and voted for me out of spite

Lol I stopped following the theme and just went in with paladin tier set and got top 3 three times in a row.

I vote for what looks good having fit the theme but I’m not into snobbery.

Lol dude nobody gives a crap if someone comes in with a full set there. People sometimes vote what they think looks funny. And lets be honest not everyone has tmogs fitting for every category so they have to do something
