I am fairly bad at using my trinkets so i normally assign my on use trinkets to a common spell so they are always getting used but not ideally. I have a wide selection available but following two sim the highest in single target using BoAT 
Empyreal Ordnance and 
Inscrutable Quantum Device,
The sims are going to assume ideal usage but what is that? I could just stick them on my bars but suspect i might end up not using them at all rather than badly. Any advice?
These trinkets sim so high since you can combine the buff you get from the Ordnance with the other trinket and all your CDs.
They change your playstyle by a bit though. In most cases you want to use the ordnance as soon as possible in a fight. Then you wait until the buff of the ordnance reaches you (after the debuff on the target expires it flys back to you). Then as soon as you have the buff AND the shared CD on the Quantum device is finished you use quantum device, celestial alignment and convoke (can all be in one macro). So basically you only have one trinket you use outside of a macro.
I highly recommend getting a weakaura to track the trinkets.
This will yield you the most dps in single target. On multi target where adds might die before the ordnance buff wears off, you might want to use another trinket (e.g on sunking fight).
One note for raiding. On sludgefist you want to delay everything so you apply your ordnance around 20-23 sec before the charge so you have the buff during the pillar damage phase.

I have a Weak aura for IQD that tells me what I will get, i keep an eye on it at the start but mid fight dont really notice 
I never feel i do that well on Sludgefist. Convoke on pull, second and fourth pillars, CA on first and fourth pillar. But never seem to line eclipse up properly.
