Trying out a controller, instead of Keyboard & Mouse

I recently learnt that I can use my Xbox controller as an input on World of Warcraft, And I really like the idea of being able to sit back on my sofa with my feet up.

I’ve come across a few snags, Whether it’s my fault, Maybe I’m missing something important, I’m unsure.

So I’m trying to Key bind my spells and abilities that are on my action bar to my controller.

I’ve got the jist of what I want doing, I’ve set the directions on one side of my action bar (Up, down, left, right) and the action buttons(Y, B, X, and A) on other side.

What I’m struggling with is using those buttons as three different spells/abilities.
(I can use other action bars and set those with other buttons and/or combinations, but I also wanted it to look cleaner, and not fill my screen with buttons and icons)

Example:
If I were to set Raze to the B button, and press B, Raze will go off.
If I were to press the Left Trigger, and the B button then Swipe will be used.
and if I were to press the Right Trigger and press the B button, Thrash would be used.

/Cast [Nomod] Raze
/Cast [Mod: LT] Swipe
/Cast [Mod: RT] Thrash

(This doesn’t work,)

I thought I could solve this with a macro, by having the macro modded with Left & right trigger.

Does anybody know how to set a macro to use Left and/or right trigger as a mod in a macro, or if it’s even possible?

Should I be going this route? is there an easier way to do it?

Thanks for any help/tips/suggestions.

Can’t help you with the macros that you want, but have you looked into using ConsolePort addon?
It’s fantastic and very customizable.

I have not, I’ll check it out!

Do you mean rake?

How about making the digital cross button into the modifier

Just bind more bars. You don’t need to do it in macros.

I’ve played with a controller for years (Mop->SL) and my bar set up was 4 bars one over the other, each one being a different modifier (LT, RT, LT+RT) and i’m still using this even tho i’m mostly playing on a keyboard those days. I had around 72 binds on my controller that way . I had LB and LT+LB as an hidden bar modifier, but i think the current controller support does not allow LB to be a modifier. Mine was different since i used Steam OS to emulate Shift, CTRL and ALT through LT, RT and LB. I never really used the innate controller support of Wow since it came up late in BFA.

Controllers huh? It has bad rep. PC master race !

Well, since i was raiding in Mythic , playing on a controller, as DPS as well as a Healer, i think i can argue that playing with a controller isn’t a problem at all, especially now that Blizz included a better support than i had when i designed my 2 setups (One with JoyToKey+Xbox 360 controller, and the later one with Steam OS with the Steam Controller). I had more binds on those 2 setups than most players have on their Keyboard and MMO mouse.

The only reason i don’t play with it as much today is because i was pretty used to have a Touchpad on my Controller with the Steam controller and they discontinued it so i had to find another way to play when my controller broke. I still have a setup for chill play on an XBox One, but since i’ve modified my mouse and Keyboard setup to have a gameplay very similar to GW2/TESO Action Modes, i don’ need to use it as much.

I was playing that way originally cause with the way camera is handled in Wow (constantly having to maintain right clic) frequently developed tendonitis in my right hand after long gameplay sessions. Controllers helped a lot in that regard. And to be fair, having to switch back to Mouse and Keyboard, i had the same problem during SL, until i learned LUA to develop a tool to play without ever having to maintain the camera right clic button. The inclusion of Action Combat and the Interact button in DF Beta helped me a lot to refine my addon in a way that suits my needs.

Know that Wow’s way to handle camera is now an archaic way to play that’s stuck in the past, when we tried a bunch of way to handle 3D camera.

Why not use an addon? There is this addon that my SO was using while playing with a controller. It was super cool and worked great.

And camera stuff, again, use an addon for dynamic camera! Makes the game feel like an action RPG

Cause Console port did not exist back in Mop/WoD when i develop my own controller setup. The first version of it came around half Legion, if i remember it well. And to be fair, when it launched i did not like the way it handled things, so i did not used it over a testing period to come back to my own system.

As for Camera stuff, i do have Dynamic Cam for angle and situation management purposes, but aside from having a prettier angle, this addon doesn’t do much to change the way camera is handled in-game. You still need to keep pressing your right clic to move you camera.

That’s what i’m doing. Even better, i found an old discontinued addon made by someone around 2016 and left on Github. So i learned LUA to modify it to my needs. With it i had a functioning (but not quite perfect) Action Mode and i played with it from Sanctum of Domination until the beta of Dragonflight. With the modifications made by Blizzard around Action style targeting, i then made another round of changes in the addon and since DF launched i use it to play Wow the same way i could play a game like Elder ring on Mouse/Keyboard.

Camera is handled by the movement of my mouse
Left clic and Right Clic are spells instead of camera functions.
Shift+Left Clic allow me to toggle easily between the default camera motion of Wow and the addon one when i need it.

Sometime, the best way to suit your need is just to solve the problem by yourself instead of waiting for someone else to solve it.

Maybe one day, i’ll refine it so other players will be able to use it, but i have other projects on ice that are nicer. I just need to find time to finish them, and really between BG3, GW2 expac, D4 season 1, Wow (still playing but mostly raid logging) and maybe Starfield, i won’t have much time to put on that until 10.2 comes out.

I recommend you get ConsolePort if you haven’t already. I’m pretty sure it does modifiers on its action bar, which by the way is also somewhat shaped like 2 dpads.

I don’t know if you can do modifiers in macros directly with controllers. I do not think so.

Maybe you can program the R1/R2 etc. as modifiers like ctrl/alt/shift, so you can have r1+□ prgrammed as ctrl+F1. I’m not sure if it works, it’s just an idea
