That was actually addressed in Legion; in one of their caves, the one with the candleking. There’s a quest that shows how void creatures show up when they’re deprived of their candles. All along, since the very start of WoW, kobolds have been fighting the void. And adventurers have aided the void lords by stealing candles.
The Jailer tried to warn us, we weren’t ready.
