[TWW] So about the Arathi

The only thing they have in common with the Scarlet Crusade is fanaticism.

Yep. We haven’t seen them executing unbelievers or anything like that. (Battles of self-defence don’t count!) There’s a conspicuous absence of cages, gallows, and torture chambers as well, which the Crusade had aplenty.

The Expedition may be more open and desperate now, but you’d think they’d still have the infrastructure if Arathi as a whole were closer to Scarlets? Unless Faelin sent hurried word for everyone to close the confession chambers before Anduin arrived.

I guess something they have in common are their colours. Though red and white were Arathor’s long before the Crusade adopted them. Just ask anyone from Stromgarde!

what sort of expedition ships out with torture chambers and hanging cages

The mad fanatical kind! They could’ve brought pre-fab’d IKEA racks, same as their beds and bookshelves. That they didn’t, nor ever build such things afterwards, is telling.

As a comparison: New Hearthglen was positively adorned with all manner of wicked furniture and devices.

The Iron Horde probably thought the same given the WoD pre-patch campaign shenanigans :stuck_out_tongue:

The more cynical answer is this is NuBlizzard circa 2020+ and not old Blizzard circa 2003.
Blizzard is, for better or worse softer now than they were pre-Cata in terms of how close to the grain they want to be when it comes to shock value.

They’ve leant into the 12+ rating rather than try push towards 16+.

What players think the Arathi will be is not what they will turn out to be I believe.
It’s baby’s first Warhammer/Elden Ring Vibes/Sanitized Theocracy.
Not that this bad in itself but Blizzard will not tread water with this group in particular because it’s the “pretty race” faction, ie humans + elves so they cannot let any implication that there’s something sinister going on.

Also, whatever Corpseburner was saying, that sounds right.
I think.

Ah please, leave the Arathi alone. Once in a lifetime we’ve got some truly wholesome light-users, and you ppl are already fantasizing about them outscarleting the Scarlets.
That’s why we can’t have nice things. :weary:

World of what-craft?

If they’re peace lovers killing them off is all the more fun.

Faerin straight up says they’re not like that, though, in a post-campaign quest with Anduin. The Hallowfall Arathi were forced to become more open minded and welcoming because they’re stranded among strangers and enemies.

I will be very surprised if the Arathi don’t go the way of the WoD Draenei. We’re fighting every/most(?) cosmic forces by the end of WoW and Xe’ra has already shown us the Light can be tyrannical. There’s also the Shadowlands invasion the Naaru staged. Blizzard has been dropping hints that not everything is as it seems, especially with this week’s weekly where

They basically say World Souls aren’t naturally inclined to become Arcane Titans, but the Pantheon roamed the universe making sure they would, and PROBABLY destroying the World Souls that weren’t getting with the program

The quote is in reference to the races and classes mentioned there, the company Anduin keeps - which from Faerin’s perspective is Alleria, a void elf and therefore the Arathi’s greatest enemy made manifest, and the player character.

It’s not a good example of what the Arathi might be like when several of those examples face discrimination in places like Stormwind too.

This screenshot should be pinned or something. There’s no hint of Arathi scarleting, because ppl in general are and should be wary of mentioned races and classes, it’s completely reasonable.

Except she says “I’m not sure how kindly they’d take to you” even if you’re not one of the baddies.

Like if you rock up as a NElf Priestess of Elune, the text says “hmm, think the Empire might have a problem with your kind.”

That’s also completely reasonable, to be wary of azerothian circus freak-show. I don’t see where in those lines she promises hostility.
Stormwind, for example, also doesn’t take certain visitors lightly. I fail to see how this indicates fanaticism.

P.S. Remember that questline in Desolace iirc about Elune the Warrior where PC has to bring meat to her statue? I’d say watch those elunites…

If you’re going to believe that it’s not keeping that door wide open for Evil Empire then you do you I guess, but don’t pretend that the writing isn’t clearly available for them to do so and the foreshadowing isn’t there if they want to take advantage of it.

It’s not like Faerin’s carving out positive exceptions for thalassian or human holy paladins in her “they might not look kindly” statement either.

Honestly, I don’t really think that is the case. Especially considering how one questline in city of threads is alot more unsettling and shocking than just having gallows around.

It’s more likely a deliberate design choice for the Arathi expedition to not have anything like that.

I don’t pretend anything, because there’s potential for everything.

But ppl are probably right and we will get civil war with ‘good’ hallowfall on one side and ‘evil’ empire on the other, because it’s an easy and cheap narrative. Also because ppl want it, everyone is tired of Scarlets, I get it.

I’m just a bit tired of this trope about light-wielding fascists. I need my objectively good and wholesome priests and paladins, I’ve got just that with Arathi and I hate to see it ruined by wishful thinking.

To be fair All Elves Are Evil.

Darion Mograine hung out in front of the Keep, Void Elves hang out near the Cathedral and Illidari have Commandeered an entire portion of the Mage Quarter.

A medieval torturer would wave hi to you and you’d think he was a nice old chap because he smiled while doing it.

Stormwind City Cathedral
/way 54.30, 53.83

That additional text is only for warlocks, shadow priests, death knights and demon hunters in so far as classes go. The only races that get it is undead and void elves.

A nigt elf would only get that dialogue if they playing a shadow priest.

They are not entirely welcome within the Cathedral itself.

…In RP headcanon.
Void Elves are not “unwelcome”. Hell, they aren’t “unwelcome” in Silvermoon, apparently.
