Using Loot Specialization

Hi

When I am leveling a character, for example a Blood Death Knight, and I see that the next boss drops a 1h weapon that I’d like for my Frost spec; do I have to switch my loot specialization before the next boss kill as my current loot specialization for Blood relies on 2h weapons; or can a 1h weapon still drop for me from the boss even though my current loot specialization will be Blood which uses 2h?

Thanks for any answers you might provide! ^.^

In dungeons using loot spec is preferable, weekly cache etc. can give you random class weapon, but dungeon drop is specified by your loot spec.

This has changed.
I don’t know exactly about the weekly cache (but I think it is included), but weapon caches of emissary quests or for the incursion quest lines will reward loot belonging to your loot specialization.
So for raids, dungeons and unspecified rewards (e.g. before mentioned emissary weapon caches - in contrast world quests awarding a specific item still give an item usable by your class).
So if you want the loot for an offspec, I would highly advice to switch the specialization.

Are you sure? last week my guildmate got 400ilvl sword while being in assa spec and having assa loot spec.

I am not certain on the weekly cache, but it would amaze me if it was not changed alongside the other rewards.

Looks like you’re right

So that means if I run as Blood Spec on my Death Knight, it is impossible for a 1h to drop unless I change my loot specialization to Frost?

Actually, based on a recent event, this appears to be false.

Running the Shattered Halls on my Blood Death Knight with my loot specialization set to my current spec (Blood), the second boss Warbringer O’mrogg dropped the Skyfire Hawk-Bow; a ranged weapon; despite it not being on my class’s loot table for the boss, or even something I could use. And this is despite the boss being able to drop items such as the Firemaul of Destruction, which as a 2h would suit my Blood DK far better.

So it appears that it is truly random and the system will give you random loot regardless of class and loot specialization, at least in dungeons such as the Shattered Halls.

We are talking about BFA content, you did legacy dungeon with legacy loot, so it’s another thing.

Legacy Loot mode is something that’ll trigger in dungeons and raids you out level by more than 10 levels, so in your example here running Shattered Halls you’re well past the level of that instance and Legacy Loot will be active, meaning any item from that boss can drop, regardless of active loot spec.

For Battle for Azeroth (and Legion content too as you’d need to be 121 to be more than 10 levels higher than Legion dungeons and raids) that’s going to use Personal Loot, and that will be controlled by your loot spec.

Important note: You want to make sure you have that set to the right spec before engaging the boss, so you have time to check it’s set exactly how you want it if you’re looking for a specific item for one particular spec.

The ingame Dungeon Journal lists loot drops per class and spec, so you can always check in there to see what has a chance to drop.
Default keybinding for the Journal is Shift-J
Once in there click the Dungeon or Raid tabs and the instance you want, you’ll see the bosses listed on the left side, and a Treasure Chest tab on the right to show the loot.
Gear Filters at the top give you the options to change the loot tables to show class/spec so you can see what has a chance to drop in there
