At first glance valor and conquest seem similar. But if you take a closer look the current conquest cap allows to get items for almost every slot. Also the upgrades in PvP are just tied to rating and require honor, an infinetly farmable currency.
So from a balancing standpoint I don’t think these are anywhere near equal.
My biggest criticism with the current valor cap is that it makes you feel like you’re wasting valor (and thus weeks) if you upgrade anything that’s not ilvl 210 BiS gear.
It’s kinda encouraging just sitting on your valor until you get that one really good item, which can take quite some time.
Let’s not ignore the fact that you have to get the rating on every char, where in M+ the achievement is account-bound?
Besides that farming honor is far from fast, unless you spam and win RBGs. I believe you need like 6 Honor caps to get your gear from 200 to 226 (ignoring the vault to keep it simple). Sure Honor is unlimited, but pfft. That’s like 60 hours of BG spamming, Honor-gear grind not included.
This argument is quite weak imo. That you really want a BiS item is not the system’s fault. As long as you have random drops, this issue will remain in one way or the other.
It’s less of an argument and more my opinion on it. I just dislike that I technically “fall behind”, if I opt for early upgrades.
I would be perfectly fine if I could just put in more work to get back the valor I “wasted” on the early upgrades. But currently I can’t. I will have to wait.
It’s basically just the timegating aspect I dislike. It’s fine at the start of a season. But this far in I wouldn’t mind just being able to level a new alt, put in a ton of work and get him up to date, instead of having a lot of the gear upgrades behind weeks of waiting.
This is basically what I mean. It’s not fast. But atleast I have the option to put in the work if I want to.
I think the problem is applying a PvP style currency system with a weekly cap without giving us the PvP style vendor to match. The rub is excluding all our existing gear.
The conquest style weekly cap has confused many, I’ve seen two clarifications from Blizzard now.
I see a lot of people making this argument but I don’t believe it’s actually true. Only if they made everything very quick and easy at the same time.
As long as the game is challenging and it require effort to obtain items, people will keep playing. Especially if the game is alt friendly. The idea that “gating” is necessary to prolong the game is completely misplaced. A lot of other game stays alive purely based on fun gameplay and skill progression.
(skill progression = You becoming a better player over time by practicing)
My main character is almost BiS. I haven’t had any real gear progression on it for weeks but I keep playing because the game keeps offer challenges I can overcome. I would like to play alts more but I CBA gearing them. If valor would allow for better gearing on alts through M+, then I would actually play the game more overall as I would spent more time on alts.
TL;DR - Time gating (and gating in general) is actually making me play the game less because I cannot be bothered doing anything beyond my main character.
In the same boat, my DK and Rogue are nearly fully geared besides the someplaces where RNG didn’t bless me, my only upgrades come from the vault lately, I need only 2-3 items from M+ at 210 but that’s it, I’ve been farming the dungeons I need for an eternity, yet people claim M+ is " infinitely doable " without ever factoring the time it takes to form/join a group and the time it takes to actually do the key and the time a player spends on the game.
I want to play alts, but doing the campaign, farming 34 renown, and regearing in a scarce RNG fest gearing system is just too daunting, the legendary also doesn’t help.
For alts it almost feels like the best way would be to have as many alts as possible and just do the weekly minimum.
The weekly rewards are just so much better than the rewards for putting in a lot of work.
I actually really enjoyed playing my alt in PvP for exactly that reason. With the conquest cap being so high now all that keeps you from getting good gear is the work you put in.
Every week I log onto my main and do all the essentials. I do raiding (2 days), play some M+ and farm some Maw/Torghast (if I need sockets/legendaries for an off spec). When I’m done, I would like to play alts because I think it’s fun, but I cannot be bothered with all the grinding, so instead I log off. If gearing on alts was easier I would play much more. Time gating doesn’t make people play more if they just log off.
Once you have done everything on your main, you should be able have some short cuts on alts because only weirdos want to do a tedious grind twice (or more).
that’s what they fear, but it wasn’t like that before, it’ would be like that noàw though imo because everything they release is so small it takes 1 hour to finish and it’s trash
