Ive been DH tank since they came out in legion.
Im about to find a new tank class as i feel so underpowered and squishy. Is it just me or do other tanks feel the same. Its my fav class and i love tanking but I dont know what Blizzard has done or do i need to hanf up my wings?
I know what you mean, every time I jump into a group of enemies (at least in Mythic+0) my healer gets a heartattack and breaks some keys on his keyboard. But even heroic is do or die. At the moment it’s no damage, low self heal and not tanky. Hope it get’s better once I have better gear (currently at itemlevel 168/169).
I kinda have the opposite experience, and feel quite good as a tank.
There are a number of ways I plan my pulls…
The simplest case is when I just infernal strike in, fracture, and pop spirit bomb and immolation aura. That gives me quite a bit of self healing, especially if I also pop Elysian Decree. I do these pulls when I know that I’ll survive fine until I can pop Spirit Bomb.
A more complicated case is when the pull has dangerous mobs, and I feel I won’t have enough GCDs to have enough souls for Spirit Bomb and then to pop Immolation Aura. In this case, I jump in with Demon Spikes popped. If there are dangerous casters, I place Sigil of Silence first, and then internal strike in, so it pops when the casters begin to cast, buying me a bit of time to build up defenses. I also keep Sigil of Chains ready, so I can interrupt the next casts by chaining the pack a few feet away. By this time, I’ll have Spirit Bomb and Immolation Aura up.
If in trouble, Fel Devastation after Spirit Bomb, and with Demonic, that’s quite a bit of defense and healing right there. If still in trouble, Metamorphosis after Fel Devastation ends. If still in trouble - kite. Infernal Strike and Sigil of Chains / Misery can help a lot with that.
Oh, also Fiery Brand on the most dangerous enemy. Always. That 40% damage reduction for 10 seconds sweet, not to mention that with Spirit Bomb, it also contributes to self healing a little.
As for DPS, I’m doing quite well on that department, I believe. Pulling close to 2k on single target, and 7k+ on bigger pulls with Spirit Bomb & Elysian Decree. With Razelikh’s legendary, I can usually pop Decree twice per boss, and on every 2nd or 3rd pull, and that’s a ton of damage, especially when I can pull big.
One thing I love to do is pull a good few packs, Sigil of Chain them up, Decree under them, and then kite. The initial threat of Infernal Strike -> Spirit Bomb -> Immolation Aura -> Decree is quite substantial, so I can just leg it after. If my team can help with slows (frost nova, ursol’s vortex all work remarkably well), this strategy can be quite efficient. Especially if I can pull one mob aside to Soul Cleave on, to reduce my Decree CD. I don’t feel like I need to face-tank everything, so building up initial threat and then kiting works fine for me.
I felt I was doing fine tank-wise even in 150-ish gear. Now at closer to 180, I feel like a beast. All I have to do, is line up my abilities well. Also, keep in mind that my build is not even a defensive one.
Euhm dont know how you play but dh tanks are one of the best tanks right now i did all dungeons on mythic last week and they are good you just need to know when to activate demon spikes or fel devastation or meta, their healing is quite nerfed in SL but they are nice tho, dh only suffers when they dont have any mitigation of demon spikes or meta or fel devastation but overall i think they are fine, you need to know when to kite or not tho. My dh is ilvl 183 right now atm
Also why does havoc meta keep weapons but vengeance meta the weapons vanish? very inconsistent
VENGEANCE!!1!
Vengenace DH is tier S class for m+.
It doesnt have the best mitigation, but has insane aoe dmg, decent st dmg as a tank and great healing.
It can actually be played arround 2 builds according to legendaries, one is based on being more tanky with infernal armor, or a more dmg based with soul bomb, both are viable. If you play with razelikh’s defilement as legendary you will go for the infernal armor build since your fury spender will be soul cleave to be able to spam elyssian decree, if you dont use that legendary you should probably use soul bomb.
Also the veng spec got some fel devastation as baseline spell, which is a great defensive with demonic talent. For survival once you unlock more conduits and you are able to activate the mgc dmg reduction conduit (dont remember the name) you will be fine as long as u know when to use demon spikes.
PS: the broken spec this expansion, at leas for now, is havoc, which is underperforming in every aspect except for mobility, which is kinda useless if you consider the performance of dmg, healing and defensives
I sort of disagree.
I’m running the spirit bomb build, so basically the squishy variant.
Yesterday I did my first mythic+.(Wednesday was raid night)
First mythic was a +7 Necrotic Wake - which basically means I went from M0 to M+7. Of course I had to kite a couple of groups with hard hitting skeletons or abominations with stacking debuff. But overall we finished with 1 min to spare and I was competing with DPS on the overall data.
