Video driver crash in World of Warcraft with AMD video cards (7900 XTX) on DirectX 12

You can enable graphics API metric in Radeon Software to see which API you are using these days as well.
Anyway im so bored i started making memes about AMD driver issues and submit those instead as a bug report, maybe then my bug reports least are more entertaining to read for AMD to consider taking action.

For what itā€™s worth, AMD support pointed me to a different forum post and used one userā€™s comment that the issue is fixed is evidence thatā€™s how it is. In another e-mail later, they said an engineer tested a 7800 XT with 7800X3D and that the issue with fixed with 24.3.1 drivers and the latest version of Windows. Iā€™m being very skeptical.

Personally I donā€™t quite understand why theyā€™re so dismissive of my issue, even though Iā€™ve been very willing to provide any info they might have need.

The issue is not 100% reproduce able at will you have to play for an entire week 10 hours a day to be 100% sure its fixed preferably an entire month cos for some users its much more rare then other users, going thru many loading screens daily while leveling thru Warlords of Draenor produced me the most driver timeouts and hangs in the past like 3 times a day, but it will not do this for the first day usually sometimes not even 2e or 3e and then it slowly starts crashing more often.

I was crashing very frequently before expansion came out and then i had couple of days of no crashes and then i started to crash daily again at some point i started to just keep testing levelā€™ng more alts to max level cos i did not want to do main content and have other gamers put up with my crashes, at some point i got tired of testing for a solution or finding cause that i gave up and assumed game to be broken.

Cos if spend weeks stress testing cpu ram even running non stop 48 hours 3D loads like 3Dmark custom run which i ran in windowed cos else it would interupt due user canceling the run which can trigger even when the UAC prompt pops up. eitherway i had no crashes freezes or driver timeouts at all for 48 hours and PSU test always passed so i slowly lost my mind while testing for solutions.

The only thing that worked was using Arch Linux which uses dxvk while game runs in dx11 which another user confirmed fixes crashes in Windows as well.

dxvk is bassicly a translation layer to vulkan so if the game runs in dx11 you can use dxvk copy the d3d11.dll file + dxgi.dll file from x64 folder put it into folder of game executable set game to launch in dx11 and it will translate to vulkan.

AMD been having a lot of directx related issues even visual bugs so many i could easily made an entire YouTube channel dedicated to these issues and upload daily about all these AMD reported issues.

Fact is if started reading user comments on reddit and other forums and made a list of commonly reported issues, the list has 40 issues
Now compare that to what AMD puts on the known issue list in 24.3.1

anyway even if AMD issue Blizzard should be ashamed for letting users go thru this, the least they can do is contact AMD about these issues and ask for assistance, but nothing like this is happening, and wow is bleeding subscribers.

The issue is so annoying to reproduce that if given up on it, its not like i cannot reproduce, its because i slowly go insane playing a game for the purpose of testing rather for the purpose of having fun while i spend 200E on the game assuming they fix it in the first couple of months instead its been way past a year.

And if you think playing the game on NVIDIA is a solution remember every pre expansion patch that gets released the flickering shadow issue returns.

Its an absolute joke early dragonflight expansion NVIDIA had same issue again which is why i switched AMD + many graphical issues with shaders and AMD is struggling with crashes.

Its almost as if Blizzard messed up and switched shaders for AMD down NVIDIA throat while forcing NVIDIA shaders down AMD throat leading to crashes for AMD and graphical bugs for NVIDIA.

Hope both Blizzard and AMD reads my post, cos i hate them for their ignorance not cos of this issue, if they do decide to compensate i go from highly annoyed to happy again, and just not re sub to wow again ever again, cos the launch problems already proven its a mess at Blizzard.

Probably people responsible all got fired to fill leaving CEO bags with money, its always cos of money, money i spend on the game that i refuse to keep playing cos of problems and ignorance.

If also been asked by multiple users to join the AMD Vanguard program which i rejected cos of the whole anti-lag+ debacle altho the issue at most slightly annoyed me, it shows that AMD is not willing to work with game studios on some stuff, while letting users like me suffer, and some may even be able to relate, cos of their own history with driver issues.

(7800XT) DX12 is certainly not fixed. DX11 has yet to crash me but i only recently switched to it and my playtime is really low in any WoW game. i log in for about an hour a day. i ll have to wait for major releases like cata classic or TWW to find out

Tip for devs
AMD has tools to investigate this issue
Issue may not happen in first couple of days then progressively increase instability over time.

so reproducing the issue is very annoying and frustating but it has to be done.

A bad implementation of FSR or other AMD features can also lead to instability all can probably be troubleshooted using this tool, i dont think the tool is useable by users, but if it was and its helpful i defiantly would.

More dev tools

If you wanna play WoW, never get AMD card. Too many issues.

Dont get an NVIDIA gpu either if you want to use DX12

Sorry could not ressist

I have the 7700 XT and I have this issue too, driver crashes when in a dungeon, have to reseat HDMI to fix and even then it happens again.

Personally Iā€™d rather have shadows flickering than my system being completely unreliable and leaving me out of groups for months.

For what itā€™s worth my communication with AMD continues to this day and only gets more frustrating by the day.

It became a lot more then just flickering also issues that show as if GPU is having vram issues with corrupt textures and everything the flickering is just very old bug that returns every pre expansion launch cos Blizzard does not spend any time optimizing DX12, the whole point of DX12 is to give developers the ability to do things usually the driver developers do, they are perfectly capable of fixing the issues but choose to remain ignorant and point fingers at AMD driver issues, and yes AMD has driver issues, but they arenā€™t always AMD fault, usually its either game devs or Microsoft fault due incompatibility and devs trying to brute force everything these days, which does not always produce best result, ofcourse developers are still limited in creativity to much cos they have to do so much optimizing, but that does not mean you can skip optimizations for modern hardware, you can phase out old hardware and stop optimizing for very old hardware, but ignore new hardware that may have some issues with old games due incompatibility of some sort ? noā€¦

like mentioned in previous post tho AMD does have tools that make it easier for devs, and they do cooperate with game devs as well so far it is looking like this is not happening, so all i can be is very angry rather then slightly annoyed due the ignorance that is happening right now.

and 1 user not being able to reproduce an issue while the others are able reproduce it just means something is happening on their setups, that does not happen on some one else setup.

Recent shader caching issue was great example of this, where shader caching fails if user names where accented this fix was targeted for 24.3.1, also when testing for an issue you always need test on latest driver, how can you expect them to fix something if all you do is run old driver and never update, yes their new issues on new drivers, that is why we report them, its just a shame that their is a brick wall in the way, cos it certainly feels like we being ignored.

The more you nag about the issue the more likely they realize that resolving the issue is probably the easiest step to reduce the noise, rather then going like lalalalala i canā€™t hear you.

And if you think they do not, they can easily proof they do not ignore us by least saying in release notes for 24.4.1 for example that they are investigating issues.

while Blizzard does the same, heck Blizzard has done this step, but we are not hearing back anything about the driver timeouts or even freezes and so on.

Good god this is still a problem?

Although I do appreciate it, any twinge of nostalgia and desire to re-sub for this game gets immediately squashed when I remember I canā€™t play smooth DX12.

Keep up the good work Blizz and making me stay me far away from your games!

XT users are also experiencing the same problem

AMD not fixing issues cos users keep defending them, AMD does not need defending.
And Blizzard needs to wake up to reality as well, unless their goal is to make everyone quit in which case they succeeded.

Personally what im amazed by is that this thread has many users complaining, and the last official blizzard response was in November.

Im still just using DX11, since i dont want my drivers crashing in the worst of timesā€¦ where it usually does.

WoW needs a major engine rework. they just keep updating 25 yold software. its normal to get issues like this. they should ask for help from overwatch. never had any graphics issue or crashes in that game througout all the years

What they need to do is optimize the game better, which is what they used to do back in the day when this game was rather new, but now this is a forgotten talent cos after all World of Warcraft was released in November 23, 2004, now these days they are just shoving more and more things into wow graphical updates without ever optimizing it, without respecting overall stability just expecting that modern day gpuā€™s can brute force everything, you can easily see the problem here.

But nope Blizzard ignores, AMD ignores.

200 euros down the drain for expansion i barely got to play, all i get to enjoy is endless nagging on these forums, maybe i touch some one nerve at some point and get banned cos that is more likely then Blizzard ever fixing their problems, and AMD they just pretend its not their problem.

Oh hey btw join the AMD Vanguard program that will surely help, after the many failures AMD has done such as anti-lag+ VAC ban debacle in counter-strike 2.

Or perhaps they can fix the av1 out of sync bug that been plagued since release and is targeted to be fixed in Q3 this year, or lack of feature parity or quality including driver stability.

anyway 200E go bye bye, btw you can still keep posting and ask for help on here even after sub expires, many AMD users will keep complaining until its fixed, and as long such podium exist, i will use and and complain how Blizzard and AMD keeps ignoring us, oh yeah we are investigating the issue, well are you ?
All i see is ignorance.

I just checked in here to see if they had fixed anything. I havenā€™t subscribed in a while and i guess i wonā€™t subscribe for another while.

Change to DX11 instead (in the game graphics menu)

Yeah better to wait, i blew 200 euros on expansion that have terrible experience with since pre expansion patch, Blizzard seems to think they can get away with it but they will not, if had issues with NVIDIA to different issues, but annoying issues and these where reported since pre expansion launch for couple of months by NVIDIA users as well, so i have no respect left for Blizzard, so any day they wanna compensate me but also everyone that been experiencing issues that be great.

its just such a shame Dragonflight looked so fun as fun as WOD was but i guess its to good to be true.

And i know if others still crash i do as well, not gonna waste my time, Blizzard can follow my suggestion and contact AMD and cooperate with them, use their GPU tools to investigate, i would help them as well but that opportunity has long passed.

Still having issues.

Running into ashenvale

Bam drivers crash.
