Video driver crash in World of Warcraft with AMD video cards (7900 XTX) on DirectX 12

My 4070 finally arrived, can play without crashes. Still I hope this stuff gets finally fixed, Aberrus on DX11 was borderline unplayable at times.

The only fix is to switch NVIDIA until pre patch hits for next expansion and you will run into the issues that NVIDIA users are experiencing, unless you want to play in DirectX11 as NVIDIA user.

you sure it is only cuse pre-patch ? i mean if is it then what ever lets just wait until actual Cata patch launch but i m afraid this is going to be stay as a new change in next expansion

Last time NVIDIA started to get issues was with dragonflight pre patch, so with pre patch i mean next expansion pre patch not cata prepatch

After the last update, it still gives me crashes. In fact, in 3 hours I have had 6 crashes and the last one directly restarted my PC and it is the second time that this has happened to me

What Nvidia issues? Must have missed it

honestly i dont think nvidia has that many issues. i ve been playing on nvidia laptops for years with 0 issues whatsoever. same for my friends and brother. i think nvidia issues are rare and its just exceptions to the rule. on the other hand amd issues are consistent with pretty much everyone who uses them. im wondering if there is even a single amd user who plays the game with 0 issues on maxed settings and every graphics feature turned on on directx12.

Can some one fact check this, preferably some one who frequently crashed ?

I am posting from safe mode, i highly recommend using DDU display driver uninstaller or amd cleanup utility before installing 24.5.1 or any future gpu driver

But before that export snap settings to later import again, just keep in mind you have to spam click keep user settings after importing it or it will not keep user settings and freeze.

You can export user settings and import them where you would usually update, however i highly recommend clean install of gpu driver, each update as harsh this sounds, which is why i explained also to export snap settings.

in case amd clean up utility puts you in a bootloop stuck in safe boot / safe mode hit win+r type msconfig and navigate to boot and uncheck safe boot.

Will update post maybe in the future.

Nope. Crashed 30 minutes after installing the new driver.

Threee crashes in 2 pulls on Raszageth.

“Application RadeonSoftware has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware.” ID 4109

Honestly, eff those guys. After a whole year of ignoring the issue, now they say they fixed and they’ve fixed nothing.

Wanted to share one simple link, but it doesn’t allow me, so… search on Wikipedia Survivorship_bias

btw: Yes, we do exist.

The last issue with NV cards i remember (and i have been team green for like 15+ years now) was in shadowlands with the flickering shadows.
I can’t remember any issue with crashes like those with AMD now.

Yep it existed since DirectX12 came out, they bandaid fixed it and have to do that all over again every pre patch for future expansions until they got a real fix, the issue came back with dragonflight as well

As well as some artifacting issues corrupt textures so on that was largely reported early in the expansion, guess we may start seeing that again next expansion pre patch, pretty confident it will be an issue again unless Blizzard finally fixes their own issues.

Haven’t had that flickering happen to me in DF yet, neither on my old 2070S on release nor with my 4090 now.
Maybe it’s driver specific or some setting.

That issue go’s away basically each time you clear shader cache, so NVIDIA bandaid fix for that issue probably means to block all those shaders from being generated or are deleted / blocked whatever, imagine having to do that for each shader every new expansion release, anyway i am betting these issues will return again next pre expansion patch.

That is why i consider it pointless to switch NVIDIA eventually they will have old issues come back as well, the only thing AMD is reponsible of is just ignoring the issue, they not responsible for these crashes are all on Blizzard honestly to fix.

What AMD can do is make every attempt to fix it on their end while Blizzard ignores this issue.

Btw if you have trouble reproducing driver timeouts try this in the background in Firefox while playing, seems to do the trick for other games https://imgur.com/t/unmuted?source=featured_tag_module especially if HAGS is turned on

It probably also happens with HAGS disabled tho.

After giving that Vulkan thing a shot and WoW crashing with it, I rolled back to regular DX12 and didn’t have any issues so far.

Yesterday afternoon I installed the latest driver, I have cleared the old shader caches and today I had the first crash. This driver also doesn’t fix crashes, at least for the 7900XTX

All you can do is make sure Windows Driver Updates is not replacing your GPU drivers, this is more common if you experience driver timeouts and do not disable Windows Driver Updates.

their are lot of users also reporting it being fixed, however this has always been the case, only for them to report they still crash few days later, my crashes have never been frequent however i have found ways to make these crashes more frequent for example by having this open in background, altho i cannot verify with World of Warcraft.

I sometimes have imgur open in background

Firefox fixed a AMD related memory leak issue in recent update so this may no longer work.

With this open i can speedrun driver timeouts in Elden Ring on a specific spot for example, while otherwise it can take 2 hours.

Video playback is always active technically speaking thru discord from chat messages in meme channels, or avatars that are animated or frames etc even in steam.

It’s basically unavoidable i do not think disabling hardware acceleration helps at all except for giving even worse experience.

I am currently very actively bug reporting issues, but i am annoyed that i spend 200 euros on the game i barely got to play and Blizzard is not doing anything at all, not even compensating users.

After another crash today, I reinstalled the driver with the DDU to see how it goes. If not, I will have to go back to the previous version because I didn’t have any crashes.

Edit: It hasn’t worked, I’ll go back to 24.4.1

Hello,
Coming back on this. Ever since 24.4.1 driver came out, i didn’t have any crashes. Updated again now to 24.5.1 and still playing strong, without any crashes - been playing both retail and pandaria remix, doing all sorts of contents, dungeons, raids, open world.

24.5.1 has been working for me all week, no issues. Fingers crossed that they actually did something!
