Good people of Argent dawn!
So I’ve recently decided to follow my friend to cross the already thinner borders between faction and to try out Alliance as faction (after being in the horde for most of the time).
And I kinda got excited for Void elves and I’m currently thinking about and RP idea for him. I like both shadow priest gameplay and idea with void and such, but I like the same with frost DK.
So far, I’m much more inclined to continue with DK, but I would like to play something a different than DK “icly”. I know that there are many other classes, but I enjoy gameplay a lot and I like to RP as well, and I don’t like switching characters.
Before I had Zandalari DK, but RPed him as living Follower of Har’koa - thus his glowing eyes and frost magic.
And now I was thinking what else than DK could my character be. The best thing so far (I hope it’s not cringe for some reason) is that basicly, Drana’das was some kind of battlemage who favored frost magic and combat art, while he believed in Umbric’s ambitions. That led him to be changed by void, giving him some minor abilities while still favoring his past ways…
It’s gonna be just an apprentice, no veteran or such.
But question to you all is, is it okay to play it in this manner? I don’t wanna make some head-cannon, I just really like this background. So any idea would be appreciated!
For example, how to explain glowing eyes?
If you persisted until here, I humbly thank you and I hope to meet you in Azeroth or beyond!
There are plenty of battle-mage RPers on Argent Dawn. There’s nothing to say that a void elf couldn’t be one, or indeed have been one even before their change.
A cool (heh) illusion?
Magic spell gone wrong and left a permanent reminder?
Fake eyes wrought from the heart of a destroyed frost elemental, its pain forever a part of your very soul, and its screams a reminder to all else who might dare to harm you?!
… okay that was overselling it a bit, but really, Magic™ goes a long way as explanations go.
If I still remember magic lore correctly than that is perfectly viable. Succumbing to Fel takes away your ability to use the Arcane but this not does not seem to be the case with Void; a Void Elf can easily still wield Arcane magic of any kind. And we know that combining magical skills with martial prowess is something all cultures have done at some point, albeit some with better results than others.
Am I to understand from this that you want to roll a DK OOC but RP them as being something else (a battlemage in this case) IC?
Thank you for your feedback, I especially like the bit about magic gone wrong, regarding the eyes. Something could definitely backfire for him!

Thank you Faelenn for your inisght as well, and yes, I wanna roll DK OOC but RP as “normal” living void elf
and thanks Telaryn for your feedback too! I wanted to be sure I’m not messing up with the lore and such )
I don’t know, I would of advocated using an actual mage class if it’s purely for RP - the special effects from spells is certainly worth it for events and accompanying emotes. If you’re after wearing ‘plate’ while using frost spells there’s no real basis or examples in game of “Battlemages” wearing heavy plated armor, that said there’s always a few tier sets that look armored… (Uldir for one).
Still, other than that, you’ve already had solid advice. Good luck with your character!
I remember that a few years ago this used to be heavily frowned upon and the general consensus amongst the community was that you shouldn’t RP a DK as a living character IC. These days I am not sure what people think of it, partially because I personally don’t really care much about a character’s OOC class, as long as their IC RP is solid.
I just wanted to raise that up so that you are aware some people might frown upon it. Whether or not that deters you is up to you.
Yea, that’s why I was a bit anxious and wanted to ask around first. But then again, when I rped as Follower of Har’koa, none had a problem with that as I completely stayed away from any DK ic stuff. As do I now
This is a bit of a late reply, but I would recommend trying out the same character on an OOC DK and an OOC mage and find out which of the two facilitates better transmog for what you want to represent IC.
If in the end you simply cannot choose between one or the other, you could always make the same IC character on two OOC characters, changing between the two as you see fit for different things - such as using your mage with lighter armor / more casual outfits for mage meetings and camp roleplay, while using your DK for combat events that would require more of an armoured look (if that’s what you’re going for).
Regardless, I’d say you can pull it off with either, especially since void elves have the option to have blue eyes on the character creation screen! It’s just a matter of preference, really.
I think and elf (all of them have glowing eyes) battle mage is a perfect route to go if you want a dk class but not want to be a dk ic. It’s maybe boring but the void elf heritage set would work well since all void elves regarding of class can have it. Or some brighter colored gear put together by loose pieces since the dk specific sets tend to look very death and destruction.
