And there is only one way, in lore, to make a Void elf. That is it.
Drop them in berries juice ?
I mean yeah like the berries juice comment, a helf/belf could always just use some blue body paint and weirdly for unknown reasons fraudulently pretend to be a void elf.
Just have them stick on some long ears and eyebrows and hey presto! Instant Ren’dorei!
Now you say that…that means humans can pretend to be void elfs, and potentially sabotage their heretical plans…
Yeah but then there are priests. I certainly don’t think they continue worshipping the Light in any capacity
Actually and I mean yeah its down to player choice, but I know a few Ren’dorei RPers, who do have faith in the Light still. My own does, she loves about who she is now, but she still believes in the Light and has faith in it, she just can’t really be near it, without getting a little… fried.
That’s fine, but then why research the Void in the first place? Having Velf that regretted her decisions and yearns back for the Light is cool but if you are a Light believer in the first place you shouldn’t have been exiled and been around when the transformation occurred
Yeah its a weird combo for sure, not sure if this irl comparison is great, but I imagine its similar to being a truly devout Christian but also heavily searching into demonology/dark magic and then practicing said demonology/dark magic when discovered like, is that really practicing the faith correctly?(Not that I believe irl magic is actually a thing, each to their own though) but again, you’ll get exceptions ofc, and ofc The Light “religion” in WoW to my knowledge isnt as complex as an irl substitute, pretty sure theres like what…3 rules? tenets, thats it? if you practice those tenets while also wielding dark magic…perhaps thats a thing?
Calling my velf shadow priest a “Shadowbringer” and keeping count on the bursting blood vessels around me.
Because, as so many have put in TRP’s and I believe in lore, what I use, they wanted more magic, more power (in my characters case to better protect Quel’Thalas.) Its literally been a staple of Elves in WoW lore, the want, desire for more power. Stronger power.
I shall think of a IRL example, but my brain is tired right now.
Issue with irl religion comparissons is that these forces in WoW are not just about faith, they are, by all means, obviously real. You don’t just believe or not believe in the Light, Void, demons and so. They’re there with very tangible results.
Other than that, Alleria still believes in the Light (her dialogues reveal that, kinda), some void elves may very well do, it’s just that it’s not so important a thing in their life. I’m thinking Sunday Christians. As for the other thing, why study the void in the first place, isn’t that the whole flavor of a discipline priest ? Their description going around the idea of studying scripture both holy and vile to defend their flock and all.
Yeah, I writ my original comment thinking it was hella weird, but made edits due to thinking more into it lol and aslong as someone who practices(to some degree and acknowledges when they dont its kinda "bad"ish) the faith of the light regarding the incredibly limited tenets/rules/expectations whichever one wishes to call them you could likely still use other sources of power/magic and still call yourself a “practicing worshiper” or believer whichever of the Light.
With my Void Elf, I always justified her fall to the Void as a ‘lapse in faith’, with some of the nightmares she saw during her final transformation convincing her that she had made a mistake, and it was worth trying to find a way back into the fold, so to speak.
See I love that! I love how different RPers have different takes on who they are now IC and how they are coping with it!
Faith and belief isn’t inseparable however, and the discinction is worth mentioning. Other than I concur, making a 1:1 comparison between verifiable forces and less-verifiable irl faiths isn’t a natural fit.
You don’t really need an IRL sample… this is a fantasy setting.
The Light and the Void are inherently opposed. Today’s BKs and Priests, if they are faithful, which they have to be in order to use the Light, would simply not delve into Void research, especially when it was based on Darkhan’s research of all things.
I am not arguing about lapse of faith thing, indeed this is the case I illustrated in my earlier comment.
At the end of the day gamers can do whatever they want right, they can create a pro Sylvanas Horde loving Dark Ranger who uses the dark magic the Jailer while walking in Stormwind that is secretly a benevolent Red Dragon that also worships Light. Question if the folk they’d like to RP with would ‘buy’ it.
If some would then its grand, however I think you would have hard time to convince most people that you adhered to the Light all this time but you just couldn’t put down that Darkhan book and going to these shadowy research meetings of a taboo force all while maintaining your faith with 0 doubts while being told to stop cause you might be endangering the Sunwell.
:EDIT:
I thought about ingame possibility at least for a priest if they got into the Cult of the Forgotten shadows which preached balance between Shadows and Light. Still though far fetched because its mostly Human and Forsaken thing and not an Elf thing at all, it might be an avenue at least for gamers. Then however they would not be BKs and Sun Priests which are a different thing and all about the Light.
As an alternative, an otherwise faithful scholar could’ve gone into a situation of “know thy enemy”, studying Void/Shadow artifacts, despite the words of warning from their colleagues, and perhaps even their own better judgement. The exposure could’ve turned out to be too much, and that’s what turned them to become a Ren’dorei.
There is only really one way to turn into Ren’dorei currently known in lore, that is to say be among the belfs during velf questline afaik. Would a faithful that practices know thy enemy go so far as to accept an exile for her research? Perhaps. It is an interesting perspective.
The high elf wayfarers in Telogrus seem to imply that new void elves can possibly be created. Though the question is really where the distinction lies. Seeing as they are researchers, I can easily see them unlocking a way to bestow their gifts on new recruits.
