So there’s some… stuff going around that shows there might be a third Demon Hunter spec coming. A lot of it is fake, but there is some real stuff such as:
datamined ‘Void Metamorphosis’ model ( it’s sorta blue/purple )
datamined spell icons that are normal Demon Hunter abilities but colored blue/purple
supposedly there’s a 3 Demon Hunter encounter coming up and one of them is on Void juice
Now, if this is the third Demon Hunter spec I’ll be very happy to see it exist ( playing only Havoc is terrible in the tiers when Havoc is bad because you have no other DPS spec to fall back to ) but I personally don’t like the idea of having the 3rd Demon Hunter spec being Void-based.
While Demon Hunters have SOME Void/cosmic inspired abilities like Darkness and Netherwalk, I wish Blizzard went the Warcraft 3 way and leaned more into Demonic/Fel abilities. In Warcraft 3, Metamorphosis turned the Demon Hunter into a ranged unit that could chuck Felfireballs at the enemies, so I was hoping the third spec would be a Red Mage inspired spec that plays mostly ranged, dashes in for a big nuke at the end of the rotation, then backflips out.
I think we should wait and see before jumping the gun. As it stands, the questline ends with the void elf who helps the DH dying, and the DH going insane and becoming a raid boss, because they couldn’t contain the power. Their teachings don’t get passed on to the Illidari so far.
I would not be against is, aslong as it is introduced with Nightborne and Void Elves also getting Demon Hunters, but its best to do what Telaryn said; It might just be icons and spells added just for that one boss, which is not unheard of either!
You really ought to mark this topic as spoiler territory.
To my knowledge, the Void Elf doesn’t die? She’s being debriefed after the botched ritual at least, during a conversation with Umbric. An exchange I would tentatively call foreshadowing as well.
I was not aware of this. Third spec for Midnight, probably. We do need it…
I’m just very surprised they went this way ( if this is the way they’re going ) because it wouldn’t have been my first choice at all ( I would’ve leaned more into the magic part of DH-ing, Illidan casts spells a bunch in the books )
That’s something I was admittedly told second hand by someone else, though they linked some dialogue about the DH implying the void elf failed and thus won’t be missed.
Either way the spec would be cool, but staking all hopes on one DH who fails and goes insane might be jumping the gun a bit too early before we know more about it.
Even if it becomes a thing, and evne if it doesn’t, what’s stopping you?
My own Demon Huntress already uses shadow magic. The class itself already has several shadow-themed abilities (Darkness, particularly). It wouldn’t be unacceptable.
The whole “void+fel clash violently” stuff solely comes from Xhul’horac in HFC, but I would note his dungeon journal entry:-
Summoned by Gul’dan from the depths of the Twisting Nether, Xhul’horac is one of most powerful of the Void Revenants - a race of parasitic void-beings that tear holes through the planes of reality, consuming and absorbing the energies and beings within. Gul’dan has twisted Xhul’horac, feeding him overwhelming Fel energy, and using his powers to tear open the portals through which he plans to rally the forces of the Burning Legion.
His was not a normal situation. He was explicitly ‘twisted’ and fed ‘overwhelming’ energy. And, well, any amount of magical energy that is overwhelming tends to explode, regardless of what variety it is.
Though we don’t get to see how the quest ends yet, that’s how the quest starts and it leads on to her being found and her proceeding to continue her work aiding the Illidari, despite her comments about how arrogant he is.
As for the Illidari’s final fate, all of the information we have about his state of mind is in the encounter journal:
Adarus, now a demon hunter brimming with barely-contained abyssal power, seeks to devour the void energy surrounding Manaforge Omega. His deadly allies, Ilyssa Darksorrow and Velaryn Bloodwrath, have joined Adarus in pursuit of larger prey. Together, they will destroy all who oppose them, leaving nothing but chaos in their wake.
If other demon hunters are assisting him, maybe he’s not quite as insane as we thought, just a very reckless opportunist who doesn’t understand the consequences of what he’s dealing with.
That’s just demonic propaganda! You have no proof.
But generally yeah, Burning Legion has always been using shadow/void (it’s the same bloody thing) so a DH going further into it shouldn’t be a problem.
People out here be so quick to meta it’s crazy. Already seen a few people RP’ing as a Void-wielding DH because of it
Edit to add more context;
To be honest, there is shadow markings that you can get for your DH model that has been in since their release which hints and may of linked back to the Class having a more shadow-based / void wielding part.
