I asked my fiancé last night.
He said ‘UwU’ is an animal face with closed eyes. Related to ‘OwO’ which is the same face with eyes open.

Would that mean ‘>w>’ would be the same face looking sideways then?

Correct.

From what I have seen it is the common trademark of the UwUlpera (not to be confused with regular vulpera.)
